Not going to have a crack at the kid but good luck to him.
But this is yet another poor result from our rookie list. So we've lost Toohey. Zac Bates has barely been sighted. Delaney doesn't even look close to playing. Bourke from the year before only lasted a season. 2012 we didn't even use a pick. Then we've got guys like Eardly and Sheringham simpkin burbury bathie. I would suggest that in the past 5 years our only decent rookie is Walker that we still have. Blicavs technically wasn't a rookie. I think out use of the rookie draft has been poor and it must improve.

Pfft. Young James has some health issues that have played a big part in him making this decision.

And need I say the rookie list is there to roll the dice on a few blokes. We've got reasonable service from our rookie list in recent years, how many stars do you expect to get from it? How many stars do other clubs get from it?

Would be hard to.

The guy has a heart condition, had surgery, and decided it's best for him to move on.

No criticism of him, or our selection of him, is warranted.

Podsiadly? He went alright. But yes, I take your point. The Pies and Hawks have produced some gems in the rookie draft. Especially Hawthorn. Luke Breust as an example is an absolute gem. Pick 47 in the 2009 rookie draft. Wow. He wasn't even picked early in the rookie draft. Hasn't he made some clubs look foolish.Imagine if we had of got him. Easy in hindsight though.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Everyone is so much wiser with it.

Let's take this time to wish James all the best in his future endeavours!

but we have wells the king?

What is our rookie list strike rate versus other clubs? Hard to judge without that information. My sense is the whole thing is a crapshoot.

That it is.

It's predicting the future without knowing how they'll develop physically, mentally and emotionally. Nothing more than educated guesses based on scant information.

I think getting Blicavs from the rookie list pretty much gives our recruiters a free pass for five years on finding players from the rookie draft.

I think if you find one elite talent every five years from rookie list you are doing well.

Throw in Walker and I am happy with rookie selections over last three years.

Yes, yes we do. To the envy of all the other clubs.

What are you like at predicting the roll of the dice?

Of course we would all wish any person who has such medical issues well. No one's fault - including the club. How would you know there was an issue with a kid this young until it shows up.

BUT we have either had some very bad luck with many picks in the last 3-4 years - or we have not done enough homework - OR a combination of both factors.

The fact remains we have lost a fair bit of time and picks with major injuries or similar. You could list Hartman, Toohey, McCarthy, Bates, Cowan, Brown, Hmac, Menzel, Vardy and Delaney for the last few seasons as players who just have not made it (perhaps in the future some will). Then you add in players that have been restricted thru injury and you can add Smedts, Kersten and Simpson.

Our list has not been able to produce as many good kids coming thru because we have put so much time into these guys. Now it happens at all clubs but I doubt to this extent. My guess is we have lost at least about 4-5 ND picks and Rookie picks because of injuries. That is a lot especially when you have one of the best recruiters in the game.

With these extra picks we may have unearthed maybe another 2 very good players. And if we had another 2 very good young players in this team right now we would be a certain top 8 side team this season IMO. Maybe a bit higher than that. And more than likely next season, as the youngsters gain experience and strength - a real chance of a top 4 ending in 2016.

That is why I do favour going for a good FA, who has proven their fitness and health over a fair time - to add to the youngsters we have coming thru.

Got really have a good look at the list at the end of the season and start sorting out this situation. It is one key reason why we have not transitioned as well as we expected.

He's the kiss of death. :P

Maybe his next player can be Ballantyne then;)

Some clubs are a bit sneaky too - they'll draft a gun via the rookie list knowing no one else is aware or into them then upgrade them later. Instead of using a decent live pick in the draft.

Now do the same thing for people drafted after pick 60 in the national draft.
