Interested to see how Josh ward fits then

Probably won't affect Josh's output at all. Has been getting very few CBAs (13% last week, 30% the week before and 6% against Essendon). Josh has been playing moreso on the wing.

If anything it would mean Newcombe and Day will get to rest more forward. Maybe Cameron Mackenzie who is having a nice patch will have his midfield minutes reduced.

Good problem to have though.

Not sure we have any breaking the bank, sounds like Sicily is our biggest contract. Guys like Day and Newc on good but not huge money. Outside of that I still think a huge chunk of our 22 is on cheaper deals from before they too a big leap.

i think if we lose some around the fringes it’s more likely to be the guys who can’t quite crack a best 22 spot at the moment. In another 2-3 years when all the younger talent starts looking for long term deals it might be a bit different.

That's what I was thinking. Teams forward plan but I reckon Meek and Mass in particular would be worth even more than the top estimate of what the Hawks had planned so to resign them now they might have to

A). Let go of someone like Worpel now

Or

B). Let go of a younger guy coming out of contract in another year or two.

Would assume they kick that can down the road to give them longer to massage the books.

Not thrilled with the dees being linked. We don’t need more players with poor foot skills.
His foot skills have definitely improved and I don’t think it’s a weakness like it once was, I do think though it’s still a weird link.

He’s really not that much worse than LDU, if the saints save 600k a year then he would be a good get. Doubt he leaves though.

I'd say we're likely to lose Hustwaite, Serong and Reeves to trades come seasons end.

Bruest, Frost and Gunston will retire.

Scaife, Butler, Bailey Macdonald, Seamus Mitchell and Bodie Ryan potential delistiings or trades as well.

We'll have a bit of turnover, so I'd say the club will be pretty keen to retain a best 22 player like James Worpel.

Yeah not just cap space but also the pick they’d get for him. He’s someone they can afford to lose if it means landing a significant upgrade like Reid.

Even if they got band 1 for him, which they wouldn't because no one is offering him those dollars regardless, the Hawks are going to finish high. After all the academy and father son shenanigans I don't think a pick in the 20s would move the needle for a Reid trade somehow. If they push him out it will be for cap space, not the token pick.

If we’re losing 6 players to retirement and trade I doubt very highly we’ll be delisting many players at all. You don’t destroy your depth while you’re in the window, especially guys who have shown they can go ok at the level. Maybe skaife would be the only one in danger

I'm not necessarily suggesting they'll all go at once. I'm just saying that all those guys are at risk of not playing for Hawthorn next year as individuals.

Serong and Hustwaite to trades and Bruest and Gunston to retirement feel almost certain for starters.

He's a bit better than that but you are overloaded with inside mids. Unless you are trading Oliver and/or trac I don't see why you would chase worpel (especially given drafting langford). You guys need forwards not inside mids.

Seriously underrated player. Foot skills have dramatically improved and showing more explosiveness from stoppages these days. Would be a great pick up for the Cats or Bombers but not so much the Dees based on needs. Happy at the Hawks so can’t see him leaving unless another team offers him a significant contract upgrade.

Looks like the Hawks are happy to let him walk and use the cash on Allen/Harley Reid/Gary Ablett Junior etc..
Looks more like Hawks need to align on other deals before locking in Worpel’s contract to be front-loaded, back-ended etc.

I would have thought the two gun young mids they just picked up will get midfield time anyway.

Both Harvey and Xav look real, real good.

Not keen enough to offer a contract.

Wonder what discussions have been had or are both parties happy to just wait to the end of the season?

Player as a RFA will want a decent deal. Clubs prepared to pay more if they get him for free as a RFA.

And yes, Hawks looking at better targets and need the picks.

Looks like both parties acting very commercially. Club obviously doesnt rate him high enough to be a priority signing.
