Proof?

Any proof 650-700 isn't band 4 under the new CBA? or that he's getting 500?

Again, proof?

I think I'll just call out the BS claims of wrongdoing from now on.
We’ll using Silvagni’s and Worpel’s reported figures something isn’t adding up.

800-850 for Silvagni band 2 and 650-700 for Worpel band 4?

Either the compo got fudged or Geelong is underpaying him.

Or you're making assumptions based off half the facts.

What we know:

Compensation for Silvagni leaving.
Compensation for Worpel leaving.

What we don't know.

The contracts for either player.

P.S. Quoting journos with their figures is not evidence. They don't know either.

It was on the proviso that the numbers were somewhat accurate, or at least the difference in the two salaries.

The journos are likely guessing on the salaries but what would you say is a realistic gap between a 27 yo Silvagni and a 26 yo Worpel in salary to spit out such a difference in compo?

Bearing in mind that by the AFLs own admission the age of a player has a heavy weighting in their “algorithm”

Geelong and Hawthorn offered him practically the same deal so no he isn’t getting “uNdErPaId”
That’s the market, that is his value.

The contract and age values play a factor, clearly he isn’t as valuable as what people thought he was going to be.

If either of these things were true, why wouldn't Hawthorn match then and get a better deal from us (or keep Worpel)? Or scream to high heaven about something dodgy going on?

You're basically trying to argue the Hawks will happily allow themselves to be ripped off, purely to help one of their biggest rivals. :$

Geelong under pay all their players.

It's just amazing how so many players agree to be paid so much less than if they went elsewhere.

Must be something in the clean country air down that way.

Probably because the best deal we could get from you is only 1 or 2 picks better off. There is no point us arguing for a week with Geelong because we got band 4 instead band 3.
I doubt we were offering band 2 level. If we were, given we know what Geelong offered him, I am sure we would be letting it drop the difference in the contracts

Compo doesn’t seem to good for him.
Has played consistently whereas Jack managed a handful of games a year for end of first round.
Geelongs payment scheme didn’t do the hawks any favours- brown bags should be included

You know Hawthorn offered him the same $$$ to stay, right?

Eagles will still get top compo for Allen because they need it. That's the biggest part of the AFL's secret herbs and spices. There is no way they actually have a transparent system in place.

And we got given a priority pick to give to brisbane for Starcevich to make upping Allen to band1 worth it for Brisbane.

Worpel to Geelong? Yeah sure I've always rated him :$
Don't worry. You are about to feel the love hate relationship and feel what we've felt for the last 6 years

I mean he's not Frost level, but some days he'll just plainly forget how to kick the thing. Maybe the wind down at feeling will benefit the hospital kicks he's bound to pull out

Super under rated player I feel when he's on, he'll have 2/3 games where he will try to do too much and instead of being happy to chain handball he'll try to gain meters kicking it being held on and get a silly holding the ball

4 years screams geelong has confidence in him, I think it was his biggest problem this year. Won't be surprised if he gets back to being on the level of player where your feral one eye supporters genuinely believe he should be AA and he's your second best midfielder. I kind of hope he does. He was a shining light in a pretty shit hawthorn team and lost his way a little bit. I hope he had individual success and no team success 😍

He was stuggling to get a game a year or two ago and his disposal is sub par. Compo is about right. He will not change the Geeling midfield much, no weapons in the middle (Smith is a winger).
Couple of years ago he was averaging 26 disposals a game, wtf U on about? Meth kicking in?

Back in 2022. Has played 23, 25 and 21 games in the last 3 years

Worpel is an excellent player, hampered by injury this year, terrible luck as he was way BoG in the first half of the opening round v Swans, prior to a significant injury.

I can only surmise that Hawks are very confident of getting Merrett, otherwise I think they would have matched the offer.

I just wonder if Sam Mitchell has a plan to give HH an extended look at it this year, although he might not have done much in his first few games, he is clearly above VFL level (as is Serong)

And Brisbane people are saying no way are they giving Draper what is needed to get Band 2. The AFL use FA compo instead of priority picks to meddle.

Wrong.
Geelong offered more money and the Hawks seem pretty content to let him go, hence why they can’t be arsed to match.

However the compo system is a joke.
I don’t give a shit about where you ended up on the ladder the year before.
Carlton get pick 19 compo for a solid average player in Silvangi and the Hawks got pic 19 compo for losing a once in a generation player.
Let that sink in for a moment.

Maybe Hawks didnt match because Worpel wants to go to Geelong and we dont want to force him to stay against his will?
Sometimes it’s really just that simple. You know the bloke is of good character; intent to stay until his free agency period despite Geelong being his first love.

Underrated, I think. He’s at his best when he’s an attacking midfielder (contrary to him being an in and under type, he leans heavily on attacking/aggressive play). He is very average at defensive play (not horrible, just average). Has a bad habit of trying to “don’t argue” - has the strength but his arms aren’t long enough… nor is he able to burst away like Dusty, so he just gets caught and lands himself into trouble. Better off just trying to bulldozer away (like that time he shook Selwood off from his hips) without losing momentum and then disposing of the ball, keeping his eyes on a target rather than looking at an opposition player as they grab his free arm.

Have loved Worps playing for the Hawks. Always gave 101%. BnF Winner. Knows how to win the footy, and never ever shirks to contest. A tough player

BUT, the dude has some flaws in his game that devalue him from the higher echelons of the comp.
  • He tends to be a poor decision maker. Disposals go to team mates under pressure, or even worse, to the oppo
  • He doesn't have 360 degree awareness. Was the player most likely to be pinged HTB
  • Doesn't have extra strings to his bow. Isn't that fast, doesn't kick many goals. Not a run and carry type
His biggest issue is that he plays alongside Jai Newcombe, who is just a much better version of the same (sort of) player.

The above is why the Hawk list folk didn't want to commit to him, both in terms of dollars and years, and why the Hawk fans are content that we can give him his wish, and head home to Bannockburn with the family. I would also guess that he represents a good depth option for the Cats, but probably doesn't have the tools in his kit to become a real regret for us.

We have both Josh Ward and Cam McKenzie, who have a higher ceiling potential than Worps, they need the midfield time for 20+ games to take the next step. Add in HH to that mix (although his lack of pace hurts a lot)

Good Luck Jimmy Worps. Thanks for the fun over the last 8 years
