This one has been getting a fair bit of coverage over the last week or two. Seems like Collingwood's pursuit of Jack Silvagni is going to cause a list squeeze at the Pies and unrestricted free agent Jamie Elliott may be the one to go. In order to genuinely compete for flags, we (the Suns) do need a high quality small forward to partner Ben Long and can consistently kick goals - Elliott has proven this year that he's very much capable of that as he will end up kicking 50+ goals this season.

Apparently we've offered him more money than the Pies have and possibly more years. Elliott spent part of his childhood in Queensland and his brother/s still live up here so it probably does appeal to him to make the move for several reasons now that he's getting to the backend of his career. Obviously there's also a level of leadership and finals/premiership experience he can offer to a young team that's seemingly about to open a premiership window.

So. You guys buying it or will he end up staying true to the Pies?

He’d be fantastic for the Suns, a real professional with confidence and flair. Suns have built a body of character at last, he would enhance that.

Would not begrudge him a payday either, has been great for us and happy to trade him where he wants to go if that suits him. He would be a loss of course, but not too many years left, and maybe we can’t afford him any more?

Not hearing there’s a player strike brewing.

Elliott certainly ticks a lot of boxes that we'd be looking for. He seems genuine about his desire to move to Queensland after his football career ends so maybe this is a two birds - one stone situation for him as he gets ready for retirement in a few years from now. The warmer weather should help his ageing body, too.

He did the same thing with Brisbane last time his contract was up. Even toured the facilities, said he wanted to live in Qld but in the end just wanted Collingwood to up their offer. Probably no different this time.

He's been offered 2 years at Collingwood and I doubt the Suns have the cap space to be paying more than Collingwood. If he goes to the Suns he won't be cashing in.

At this point he’s provided us plenty of wonderful service so wouldn’t begrudge him moving to where he wants to be.

Would love him to be a one club player though

Am I wrong in thinking he plays better in a more ‘loosely structured’ fwd line - like Buddy - than a group of talls, mids and smalls as per Geelong or Swans?

Ive always thought Papley was better with a Pagan’s Paddock set up.

To be fair, Collingwood had just come off the 2018 GF + finished top 4 again in 2019 so it would have been hard to turn your back on them if you think you could be about to win a flag. This time it's a bit different because he's already played in a premiership and probably doesn't hold that desire as much as he would have back in 2019.

Reports are that we (the Suns) are willing to offer him more than Collingwood have, if he's interested in moving up here. We also asked questions about Bobby Hill and he likely would have cost more so I don't think we have cap issues at the moment. In recent years we've let go of a few guys that were getting paid way too much for their output like Lukosius and Bowes. Now it looks like we're going to use that space to land high quality players like Rioli. Elliott may well be next for us.

He's pretty hard to match up on and stop when the ball's coming in quickly and there's some space.

Gold Coast are about to become a destination club in a big way

You mean I can live on the GC AND have a shot at a flag?

Ok where do I sign?
Some on field success was really the last box to tick. Recruitment should become easier now that we're officially a finals team. Also helps that Brisbane won the premiership last year because it shows a team based in Queensland can win the flag in the modern footy environment. I'm sure Dimma will work his magic over the next 2-3 years and land some big names.

To be fair, thanks to mass migration in 2020, house prices have nearly doubled. So it would be more economical viable for most player to stay out of South East Queensland and stay in Melbourne.

I hope Dimma works his magic for you and entices some players, perhaps one day you'll know what it's like to have a Tom Lynch or a Dion Prestia.

Average AFL wage is $500k. Curnow be on double that.

I doubt they are counting their pennies.

Lifestyle and success would be more front of mind.
