Jamie Elliott - underrated

Elliott finals record:

0.7 goals per final.
Played 2 finals in his first season and 1 in his second for zero goals. Agreed - not enough contribution from him then.

But has contributed on the scoreboard in each of his last 4 since then.

Prior to long-term injuries taking him off the park, it was line-ball between he and Eddie Betts for the best small forward playing at the time.

A tale of woe for Pies supporters, but I doubt opposition fans would notice and/or GAF.
2015 was his last injury free season and I really don't think he was anywhere near the best small forward then, or at any point in his career. He is certainly a good player, deserving of a spot in pretty much any teams best 22 but wasn't even close to the likes of Betts, Wingard, Cyril or Breust in 2015. Even Tory Dickson kicked 15 more goals than Elliot in 2015. Walters, LeCras and Jeff Garlett also kicked more.

The fact that he is still going strong at 29yo after all of his injuries shows his true class imo.
Always plays well on those rare times I'm forced to watch the Pies.

Between 2017 and 2019 Ben Brown kicked more goals than any other player in the competition. Finished last year strongly with a very nice finals series. First game back from injury tonight, will be one to watch!

Probably each of us being one-eyed here but I’d be taking Elliott at his best over Brown at his best. Inappropriate timing by me but I feel Brown is a one trick pony. What I love about Elliott is he can effectively play the Brown role, or the Fritsch role, or the Pickett role. May not play it as well but can be a FF, FP and a CHF.

Kozzie Pickett, kicked more goals in his second season than Elliott has in any season, even the ones he wasn't injured in.

To be fair, worth mentioning Pickett also played all 25 games for his 40 goals, averaging 1.6 per game.

Elliott was averaging 1.5 goals per game in his first full season (30 goals in 20 games), almost 2 per game in his second season (33 from 17 games) and 1.75 per game in his third (35 from 20 games)

Again, you’d be taking Elliott ahead of Pickett if you’re picking one of the two right now and not looking at their ages.

Tom MacDonald is very handy, unfortunately he is injured at the moment. So yeah, fourth best, which is pretty good for the reigning premiers I think. Mind you, Joel Smith has been learning some forward craft recently and we have JVR looking nice in our unbeaten seconds.

Don’t reckon any of these are close to Elliott, so I still have him as your second best forward. No mean feat for him in the reigning premiership side.

I would have loved Elliott at the Dees a few years ago. Not now though. About to turn 30 and been plagued by injuries.

He’d be a handy forward for you now considering your window but fair enough.

Right now? Pickett's averaging 1.7 goals a game to 1.3, in a side which is defensively focussed and doesn't kick many goals. I'd have Kozi every day of the week. Elliott's a ripper player tho.

He’s amazing, I’ve thought it for years. I’d say he’s your best player atm.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 Kozi is the most overrated player in the history of the game. Only get picked cause you have no small forwards depth. Rather have Cumberland.

Turns into Carey against Carlton but other than that probably rated about right.
Was about to say the same thing when i read the thread title!

Not under rated by Carlton supporters and always seems to have career days against us.

On topic he is a very good footballer and up there with the best small forwards playing currently.

Was thinking first half of 2014, before the injuries took their toll. I’m not going to bother comparing to the stats of all the players you mentioned, but he had more goals than all of Betts, Rioli and Wingard in that period, and he got plenty of the ball.

Something that people might not remember in the future decades. Before his years of injuries high marks like this was consistently part his game. But very importantly he's still as an effective player though without taking marks like this once a month. He gives it his all out on the field.
