all a captain has to do in afl football is call the toss, give a speach the players all forget as soon as they leave the huddle and head off to position. The only important thing a captain has to do in this game is play well and set an example by the way he plays and set the bar and he does that. Football is not like cricket, it's not that important.

Think it's a bit more complex then that.

Captains often always have to come up and have a quick word to a rookie or first year player who feels discouraged after making a mistake or playing a bad game (most players can sense another's body language, especially those who lack confidence)

Sometimes coaches sit back and let the captain address the players at Quarter time/3 quarter time etc, especially if it's a close game and/or crucial game, IE a final.

The days of clubs appointing the best player on the list as captain seem to be over, I'm not sure why Collingwood and Richmond picked Maxwell and Newman to be their captains, but they seem to be happy with the job they are doing at their respective clubs (although it is an indictment on the lack of leaders down at Richmond IMHO)
