Janine Haines dies aged 59
20:16 AEDT Sun Nov 21 2004

Former Australian Democrats leader Janine Haines has died. She was 59.

Ms Haines, the first Democrats senator and the first woman to lead an Australian political party, had been suffering from a long-term neurological condition.

"It is with great sadness that I announce that Janine passed away on Saturday 20th November in Adelaide at the age of 59," independent senator, and former Democrats leader, Meg Lees said in a statement.

The Australian Democrats said they were also preparing a statement following Ms Haines' death.

Senator Lees described Ms Haines as a great Australian, a friend and inspiration.

Very nearly snatched the seat of Kingston 1990 in an attempt to become the first Democrat in the House of Reps. They've gone backwards since.

I am a bit stunned. I know she was nealry 60 but time passes so quick. My mother had a lot of time for her and had met her on a few occasions.

Very strong and smart politically and as posted nearly made it to the reps.

Vale Janine Haines, the last of the Democrats who stuck to their original charter to "keep the bast@rds honest". She was an intelligent, honest and engaging person, who would have been a superb leader of either major party had her political leanings gone that way. A compassionate woman, she will be sorely missed by those who ever had anything to do with her. Universally respected by her colleagues and opponents alike, she was considered tough and uncompromising when it came to getting the best for the Australian people. I trust that today's Democrats will reflect on the Haines era and perhaps then, they will see where they have gone wrong today. RIP Janine.

One of the most respected politicians this country ever had and was refreshing to see a politician so openly honest as Janine.

I hope all Australians regardless of political leanings truly see what a great woman she was.
