I'm not starting this thread about his run and carry or his skills. We've always known he had that ability. I'm starting this thread about his defence.

0 tackles in our loss against the Crows. 1 tackle in our loss to GWS. That's why he was deservedly dropped, and specifically told to go back and work on his defence. 4 tackles against the Tigers on his return, and then 5 against the Lions. I don't have access to the stats but I'd bet that when Janus sees this thread he'll be able to tell us that his pressure acts have gone way up in the last two games too.

He's always had issues with two way running, even in 2014 when he was in great form. And how many times have we seen an underperforming Port Adelaide senior player go back to the SANFL, rack up a few touches to get back into the side, and then play exactly the same way as they did before they were dropped? Credit to Polly for genuinely learning from his spell in the reserves, changing his game and coming back as an improved player.

If he continues to run defensively as hard as he runs offensively, he has the tools to make the step up from good to elite.

Gotta agree with you, He's gutsy around the ball and wins it very well, and delivers straight down the throat of a waiting Player. Absolutely loved his effort tonight!

Really believed that Chad Cornes didn't pick him out when he was pointing the finger at AFL listed players a few weeks ago.

Given Cornes didn't list him in the best despite his 27 or so touches (only listed Butcher for his 11) would suggest to me he was taking particular aim (wrongfully) at Polec.

Seven had an interview with the great man before the game today.

They highlighted a passage of play from the GWS debacle where he was coasting in the centre and let his man go forward and get a gimme goal just through hard running.

The message, whatever it was, certainly got through. Even in the last few minutes today he was still at it. Evidenced by that awesome triple effort on the western wing.

Fit and firing Jared Polec gives me emotions...

Was awesome...

Definitely one of our most important players. He could be our best midfielder in the team within a year or two, given his progress and development.

He's pure silk. That must have really stung if you were a Brisbane supporter.

Polec and Gray sit together as the only 2 players in the AFL who can make time stand still. I don't think even Ablett can match them. They wend their way through a pack of opponents frozen in time, and dispose of the ball before reanimation of the game. Opposition players are left scratching their heads as to what happened in the last few seconds of their lives.

Pressure Acts:

Round 7 - 16
Round 6 - 12
Round 5 DNP
Round 4 - 5
Round 3 - showing as 0 for most of the team - error. I think Macca19 posted the number somewhere after discussion of this.
Round 2 - 11
Round 1 - 20

Note: it's a little hard for me to see some of the numbers on my iPad due to the heatmap overlaying the stat number. 12 in Round 6 could be 13. If incorrect these are within +/- 1.

Polec is seriously underrated in AFL media which is ok - this kid can turn a game - he made an incredible difference to the team in 2014. We missed him badly last year. He's the sort of guy that finds playing afl easy, and needs to be constantly challenged. I rate him top ten in the league on his day.
Watch out come September if we are in contention!

:eek:can see pitchforks if/when he is rested his week because of navicular care and Etihad surface

It'd have to be a particularly attractive risk to take this week if Gray is fit especially, since no one really put their hand up to be dropped on form in last night's game.

Not at all. I'd rather Polec for the season (and career), if that's the choice Burgess makes.

Edit - after the shit way the AFL treated us over top-ups if we rest him I hope we announce it all over the AFL media it's done because the AFL is having a ground with a sub-standard surface.

Always has surprised in the strength he's got through the core, so the quality of his tackles has been impressive to me throughout his career.

However it was his attention to the defensive side of the game that has been the issue for him. Last fortnight has shown that it is more than possible for him to perform superbly in both facets so I hope he keeps achieving that lofty standard.

Don't know if he's top 10 in the league on his day just yet but he can definitely get there.
