Why would you trade a bloke who has probably been our best backman in the last 5 years?? You can't expect him to dominate with the amount of inside 50s we concede. And its not as if we have an embarrassment of riches in the KP area. Sure we have some great talent coming through, particularly in the back half, but nobody as established as Rivs. We cop a couple of injuries and we'd be in a bit of trouble.

There was an article recently about our backline and how it was the third best in ratio for inside 50's conceded to goals scored, before the collingwood match we only conceded a goal 26% of the time the opposition got an I50, the article went on to say that Rivers was #1 at our club for spoils and how he's helped the team out.

Personally I'm all for keeping him, however if he was to be traded, I'd look at someone like D Pearce in a straight swap.

So you would swap consistently injured for inconsistent?

Sorry but you guys are bonkers if you think he can't stop opposition forwards, and his help across the backline is amazingly good. He makes everyone around him better.

Future backline KP's imo:

B: ______ Martin Frawley
HB: Garland Rivers _______

Blanks are for the flankers. I'd like to see Pettard back there because he looked awesome in defense before his lung injury. The last spot could be any number of players who will rotate through the middle.

I know it looks a bit different to have four big guys in the back half, but Garland and Frawley both run and move like smaller players and ahve no problem matching up on mid sized forwards. Martin should be stuck in defense forever, none of this flirting with the forwardline business, develope him solely as a backman.

Warnock is the depth. He's the oldest, slowest and has the least amount of improvement left. That said, I still think he could net us a 3rd rounder but ideally we keep him on.

Add Bennell in the back pocket and Strauss off half back swapping with Grimes in and out of the midfield.

Backs: Jamie Bennell Stefan Martin James Frawley
H/B F: Colin Garland Jared Rivers James Strauss/Jack Grimes

Then there's still Cheney and Warnock to put the pressure on for spots.

Looks very good indeed.

Amongst all the rabble and rubbish spoken in this thread you 2 have made the most the sense. Strauss, Grimes, petterd may learn their craft in the back half but in 3 years would love to see them in the midefield with the ability to go down back if required. Bennell and Cheney can fill the back pocket positions.

Thanks, seriously, out of all the shit we've had to put up with on the field the past two seasons, teh only thing I'm proud of is our backline.

I reckon if you swapped our backline into any other backline in the AFL except for the Saints, Crows or Cats, they'd improve the team they went to.

It is a better backline than:

Collingwood
Carlton
Brisbane (debateable, they have some good young guns down there too)
Port
Richmond
Doggies
North
West Coast
Sydney
Freo
Bombers
Hawthorn

And all our KPP's except Warnock are still quite raw and quite young. Have a look at the development Frawley has made over the past season, when he first played he was utter garbage, now he's one of my favourite players (needs to work on his kicking, but everything else is golden). We're going to get better as a side, and our backline is the key to that improvement.

And Rivers is the general of that backline.
