When was the last time a club appointed a new senior coach from within their own ranks? Excluding the Goodwin/Buckley/Cameron/Longmire type succession plans, I don't think it's been done since Matty Primus. Going by that, Schoey's best chance of landing the senior coaching gig would be to convince Ken that he needs a succession plan sometime before this current contract runs its course.

When you consider the level of talent that has come from the WAFL in recent years, this could be great for us. Sam Menegola, Liam Ryan, Tim Kelly, Matt Guelfi just to name a few.

It's unlikely to be from the Subi league side, there's some bloody good hardened footballers in that team that have driven the successful era that are now a bit too old to be realistically drafted - Horsley, Kitchin, Phelan, Delahunty, Wheeler. I'd say Zac Clarke will go somewhere as a backup ruckman.

A few guys now in their prime who've been on lists previously like Deluca, Litherland, Newton, Lockyer and Powell may be a chance to go again, though as solid a players they've become at state level there are alternative options in the WAFL who project a bit higher.

Gun goalkickers in Sokol and Halligan - both very strong guys and beautiful kicks of the footy, but basically think Brett Ebert-like limitations of playing a key forward role in the second tier what would be a small forwards body at AFL. Love to see them get a go but can see why clubs may be sceptical.

Having watched a fair bit of Subi, Clarke deserves another go. Untouchable in the WAFL. A beautiful tap ruckman. Id prefer him over Lycett.

At the game I found Bassetts forward line set ups fascinating.

Sometimes three talls, sometimes none.

And with different combinations they ran with totally different shapes of where the players stood.

The shapes stood out as very obvious formations rather than just players spreading out and making it up on the fly as it has seemed previously.

No wonder our disposal efficiency improved.

Sometimes you hear coaches and players who are still involved in the game (e.g. Dangerfield commentating on the Dogs vs Swans) mention players need to be "running their patterns" or words to that effect.

I don't really know, but my guess is that "running patterns" in a forward line set-up would be similar to route running in NFL, but without the huge variety of options. Knowing where people are likely to be, rather than trying to guess where they're going based on their movements, should result in a better connection.

Had a 15-20 minute chat to Jarrad Schofield at the Club 1870 event last week. Spoke a little bit about this year and the expectations but mainly about his coaching at Subi, both his philosophy and game style and how he had control of the total footy program from u/18 up for several years at Subi, actually nearly all his 6 years at Subi.

Asked him if like Nathan Basset, he also would look after the U/14 and U/16 teams? He said he let the U/18 coaches take control of them but would go to the odd the training session to see how they were implementing his strategies he wanted to filter down to them. But he oversaw the reserves and U/18 teams.

We talked a lot about how he got guys into Subi, talked about how others say Subi is a wealthy club so its easy, but he said it isn't and he talked about taking a holistic view and looked at getting guys jobs and opportunities outside footy to attract them to the club so that they would be settled and could concentrate on footy. Talked very positively about his captain at Subi, Kyal Horsley .

We also talked about how do you get the kids who don't want to do year 12, can play the game and how to stop them being rejected by AFL recruiters because they haven't finished year 12 and have headed off to the work force early. Or the late bloomers like Kyal Horsley, who didn't really want to leave Kalgoorlie and was 20 when he left for Perth. He got picked up at 24 by GC as a rookie and spent 2 years played about a dozen AFL games there, before coming back to Perth at end of 2013 and Schoey made him captain and they won the 2014-15 flags. Schoey gets the club wide aspect of what we are trying to do despite losing the SANFL zones.

Asked him about Taj. Said he is getting on well with school and already got good group of mates, but was finding the footy stuff hard at his new club - think he is playing at Norwood - as his Subi mates aren't there and he is having to learn a different system and new players doing some different things to what his teammates he had played with for years back at Subi. But he said he will pick it all up before the year finishes.

He is loving it being back at Alberton. Said when interviewed by Baz, that he regrets leaving Port when he did. Said with hindsight he should have ignored family pressures to go back to WA and should have finished off his career with Port. Looks to be an outstanding choice by the club to get him back to Alberton.

I remember feeling resentful towards him when he left straight after the premiership. As a supporter it felt like he used us for premiership success then ****ed off when he got what he wanted. I'm glad to hear he regrets the move.
