What a talent, what a star, a brilliant game last night by young Roughead, held his own against arguably the compettion's best full back, the kid is tall, quick and one of the best marks i have seen, nearly won the game of his own boot last night, kicked 2 important goals in the context of the game, and had the chance to pull the margin back to 9 points, but missed a pretty easily goal from 30 metres out straight in front of goal, but you have to give him credit, a young boy, playing only a handful of games, that much pressure must of got to him, which made him miss.
He and Buddy Franklin will be a dominant duo in the years to come, Roughead at full forward and Franklin at Centre Half forward, it looks good for Hawks fans for the years to come.

Whilst I am far from sold on Roughead, he will be a more than valuable player in the future. Franklin is your main future champion. he has everything that roughead doesnt, he is taller, quicker, more arrogant, bigger kick, better kick and can jump higher. These kids however 'could' easily be the best Key position duo in the comp in a few years, just like sylvia and mclean will be the best midfield duo:p

Roughead is going to be a star. He consistently out marked solid Crows defenders including Ben Rutten and his marking was just great. Pity he missed that shot for goal, we could have won if he kicked that.
We are a lot better than many people think. Especially that ********er Sam 'knows nothing' Newman.

I love Roughie, He is good down back and forward but I really think his calling is up forward though. He was extremely impressive I would like him to sit in the square with Willow giving off early leads so he can come in for the crumb for the whole game.

I thought the best aspect of Roughies performance last night was that he kept presenting and giving a contest even after he feathered so many marks in the first half. He must have been filthy on himself for not hanging on to a number of fairly easy grabs but didnt drop his bundle and really imposed in that last quarter. Confidence in marking comes with experience and the future looks bright for the young fellow.

Roughead up forward gives us a whole new option to our game plan. Last year we couldnt just bomb the ball into the 50 long and high, because there was no one there that had the ability to get hands on it. This year if in doubt bomb it in and we'll have Roughead waiting and will mark 50% of the time. Even if he doesnt mark it, he will get it down where dixon, miller and williams will be waiting for it.

I thought that he showed some real promise, worked hard and almost kicked us back into the game. Although he still has a fair way to go, he's improved so much already and he will certainly be a future star for the club.

Like him as a full forward out of the square like A. Lynch was, contested in the square consistently rather than a CHF. Franklin more on the half-forward line, with Boyle, and hopefully Dowler. Meaning Willo can lead out from the square, or we can go long to roughead.

Think both Roughie and Frankin showed promise and enough to get excited with, but are still probably a year off having a real impact at AFL level. But will have some good games this year.

Boyle Dowler Franklin
Williams Roughead Miller

Some possible options for the future.

Can someone please tell me that millers game last night was a one off. He was shocking all through the game and in a 10 minute patch I saw him muff up 4 attacks on a wing. His kicking and handpassing was pathetic!

Miller seems to have improved, but still not enough of yet. No part of his game really is that damaging at the moment, but has definately improved his decision making.

Will get some opportuntites this year, but really has a lot of pressure just to retain his spot on his list. His type of player doesn't get more than three years normally unfortunately.

Miller will need to keep improving that decision making. 3 Times I saw him get the ball while Hawthorn were on the break. Once he kicked it to the opposition. Once he kicked to a lead, the ball fell about 8 meters short and the other time he was running up the wing with a hawk in support and for some reason decided to handpass to the crow that he managed to draw to him.

These were all down the ground a bit, I didn't see any of him in the forward 50. Is he a good kick at goal? His in play kicking is pretty poor.

Miller GOT THE BALL 17 TIMES in the game; which is a pretty decent effort for a 20-year-old forward with 14 games experience playing against Adelaide (the team with the tightest defence in the competition).

Oh, and by the way: Hodge got it 3 times less than Miller (14 touches); Roughead got it 12 times (5 less than Miller); Franklin got it 12 times (5 less than Miller).

How long are you willing to give a guy to learn the game folks?

Miller and Brad Sewell are the ones that make me cringe.

I watched Sewell last year and although it seemed he found his niche as a tagger, I have seen him pull out on his attack from the ball (run the line of the ball only to change his line to avoid contact) more than once now, which really isn't good enough for an AFL player. His kick last night to an uncontested Crow after taking too long to get rid of it in the first place was enough to make anyone cringe also.

Harry over all was pretty good. Had a shocking 5 minutes where he stuffed up 3 times in a row. Did look dangerous though. Has been more accountable the last couple of weeks which has been good.

People who think Franklin has sun shining out of his a#*e need to back peddle a bit, certainly when comparing him to roughhead. Roughie has shown something for me that Buddy hasn't yet. Heart. He is a selfless team player. There is nothing wrong with the kids speed and agility either and to tell you the truth he has a much better set of hands and has a better footy brain to boot. For mine Roughies name has been pencilled in for the best 22 whereas franklin is still marginal.

agree with your comments on Sewell. there's something about him I don't really like. he's a midfielder at VFL level with a solid body, good enough to be a tagger or small defender. in a premiership team, there would never be enough room for a Sewell in your best 22 but atm he makes the list of 40. just but someone's gotta go sooner or later.

I really hate to say this but atm i'd keep Ries (only just) ahead of Sewell.

Come on, come on. Don't get carried away. Sewell may not be coming on as well as I had hoped, but surely you would not really want Nick Ries!!! The guy canNOT hit a target, ever, unless it is a 1m handball. When he gets it the opposition start leading in anticipation. He is the ultimate cringe-inducer.

Croad's kicking can be dodgy - usuallly close but never "centimetre perfect", Miller's is wonky, Sewell needs work, Vandenberg lets us down, even Mitchell muffs his kicks sometimes. Nearly all of them have turned the ball over, Danny Jacobs is probably the most reliable at the moment!!! But Nick Ries is an absolute SHOCKER! (IMHO).

Sewell showed a lot in the second half of last season, really liked his game and his courage. No doubt he needs to improve his kicking though.

Miller is coming along. At least he is getting the ball now the rest will come in time.
he stills cheats too much but i suppose small forwards have to try and create play so i am will to cut him some slack.

The more we can play Roughy in the forward line the better.
Good kick at the goals, he rushed himself with that last one but that will get better with experience.
We now are starting to see a change to our forward line.
Long bombs when no option is on.
If Willow is on, hit him.
If not bomb it long. Roughead, Miller, Buddy Willow.
