Can't believe it.

I saw him on crutches at the Essendon game and thought he'd had a setback, but gee whiz. Such an innocous injury and it's the end for him.

All the best for what lies ahead Jarryd.

Jesus. I didn't know how serious it was!

I remember someone on SS posted that they saw him in public somewhere and he was still struggling to walk properly (and this was some months after the injury) so I guess it was pretty shocking. He's made the right choice though, footy's only 10-12 years of your life (at absolute max for most) and you dont wanna spend the other 50 odd in pain.

All the best Jarryd.

That's shocking news. I knew he was facing a long injury lay off but just assumed he would be back playing again next year.

Unthinkable that a players career can be ended from something which seemed pretty insignificant at the time. A real shame too, as he looked to have plenty of potential from what I saw of him last year.

wow, that is just unbelievable. 21 years old! and who would have thought that injury was career ending (I barely remember it).

hopefully the bloke had a good career plan set up outside footy.

Poor lad. Was going to be very good. As has been said it is weird that such a seemingly small injury has become a career ender. I think we all wish him well in his future endeavours.

Good Luck, Jarryd.:thumbsu:

It's very sad news.

I heard him speak to Bruce Eva in the Social Club earlier in the year and he was excited about his impending comeback.

Athe time he spoke about the injury and said doctors had likened it to that of a car crash victim. And all he did was jump in the air and land on his feet.

All the best to Jarryd in the future.

Jarryd Allen retired?

i was listening to SEN's coverage of the all-australian announcement last night and at the end of the presentations (i think after the captains were named), a short presentation was made concerning retiring players. I think mark fine then mentioned that jarryd allen came up under the list of retirees..

just wanting some confirmation and explanation if i could, i know he was drafted from the cannons only 2-3 seasons ago and am slightly surprised at what i heard..

any insight? cheers :thumbsu:

Re: Jarryd Allen retired?

Retired due to injury. Sustained a hip injury in out final against Collingwood (2008) and when trying to increase training level it return. DOctor's told him be better for him in later life to not play footy (any form) again

Re: Jarryd Allen retired?

Evidently looked like a car crash victim when they opened him up.

So we'll take a third rounder for him.

(actually I was looking forward to his return and regaining a role as a third tall forward).

Re: Jarryd Allen retired?

As was already stated, there's a thread already on the Saints forum about it, but it was a forced retirement due to the injury sustained int he final against Collingwood last year, he was advised that if he continued playing AFL by the time he was 30 he would require a replacement hip for the rest of his life so pulled the plug as he didn't want to go down that path, and rightly so really.

Re: Jarryd Allen retired?

I would like to say bad luck and well done to Jarryd Allen going out of the game at such a young age.I think he only played 4 games but thats 4 games more than 1000;s of other young men will achieve and all the best for the future.

Re: Jarryd Allen retired?

That is sad to hear. Sometimes it is just not meant to be. I would of predicted he would of been delisted regardless at years end, as St.kilda do need to turn over 4-5 players you would of thought. He did alright as a No.50 something draft pick.

Was the man that gave the opportunity for Dawson to be promoted to the main list (by memory)

Hey everyone,
Just noticed this news now!
I'm very sorry to hear this - I knew Jarryd in the juniors and can honestly say I never met a nicer person playing TAC Cup footy. He always had time for everyone and never had a big head.

All the best mate!
