Im going to assume you are taking about a potential trade for Roughy and not Thorp.

Its not going to happen.

Serious Question - in a bizarro fantasy world, and Hawthorn actually asked for Waite and a 1st round pick for Roughead, would you do it ???

I thought hard about it and... No.

Waite was close to (if not) on track for AA selection this year before injury.

And im sure we will get a very good player with our first rounder.

Dont get me wrong, love to see Roughy running around in Navy blue but thats a little over the odds for Carlton.

Factor in the money we would be paying as well...

You'd have to give up a player of quality to get a player of quality but I just think that deal is skewed to much in Hawthorns favour.

They took that deal, they would get 2 players inside the top 10 in this draft, plus Waite - and you would assume Thorp would slot in for Roughy when uninjured.

We would lose our 1st rounder and best rebounding backman, and be out of pocket an extra couple of hundred thousand per year.

Id rather just keep our 1st round pick and play Waite up forward.

Or trade our third rounder + fringe player/ defender for Thorp.

there's no way we would give waite and a first rounder for roughy, thats far too much imo, waite has improved out of site and is about to hit his peak, roughy has a lot of upside but I honestly feel his value is being overrated

He's gonna stay at hawks y would he leave Buddy, Hodgey, Browny and Lewis there like really good mate and he won't leave with our attacking force!

Meh.

I never rule out anything but this is all coming across as rumours right now and until the club makes a statement on his contract, or Roughead does (neither which will probably happen till the end of the season) we won't know.

Add to that the huge money GC would be swinging around, I am not sure if Carlton would be his destination. Not that I wouldn't love having him

The one thing we do all know though is that there will be a lot of activity come trade time this year.
GC will be desperate to get the right blend of players to be competitive from word go.

They haven't exactly an open cheque book to work with, so strategies will be in place to get the marquee/franchise players, along with many ready to go 22-25 year olds.
They'll trade draft selections and this is where all sorts of three way, four way possibilities should open up.

I think all clubs are stocking up on Red Bull even now. :)

Shaun Burgoyne left his mates at Port Adelaide.
Like coz we have like moneys and im sure he can like get new friends and play in da ofver attackn team.

If we can offer him enough, and get him to want to come to Carlton then they will have to take what ever we want or accept nothing, that is if he threatens to leave Hawthorn and go into the draft and end up at the GC.

Then it comes down to... Us offering them say Jacobs and Grigg and maybe Thornton for him > They take it and we get him or... They let their own pride get in their way, let him go for nothing and go in the draft and they Lose him for nothing ah-la the Nick Stevens trade deal where Port wouldn't take an offer and he just left and came to us.

I'm confussed - this thread was started mid last year, and seemed to imply that Roughead was coming out of contract at the end of 2009.

I would rather see him at the Gold Coast than accept a shit deal like that.

Its VERY rare that these sort of situations actually come to fruition, and even less likely they would accept players that we don't particularly want or need. There are so many factors that come into this befor ehe even comes close to wanting to choose clubs, so yeah i don't even really see where the speculation is coming from to be honest apart from the fact he's out of contract and we need a forward... nothing else points him to us.

Its rarer when new teams enter the competition. Cashed up new teams.

Its either accept an offer now, or accept a compensation 1st rounder from the AFL that cant even be used for 2 years.

Swann's comments re building a 'war chest' to lure an uncontracted player at the end of the year?

CARLTON has unofficially set aside a million-dollar war chest for the 2010 trade period after finding itself well inside the salary cap following the unexpected losses of Brendan Fevola and Nick Stevens.

This is actually the most appropriate word used in this thread:thumbsu:
Confused and Fussed.
Spot on, so am i.
Not sure we should do whatever it takes. But,the Hawks love a trade and seem to get them done, unlike alot of other clubs that bitch and moan and leave their players out to dry:thumbsd:
Roughhead,Hendo,Setanta,Waite and the short people,NICE:D

If it came down to a choice between GC and us I think we would be in the box seat, as I don't think they would able to afford the unlimited supply of sun screen he would demand if he was to move up there.

Didn't Hawthorn offer 2 second rounders for him back in about 07?
(Personally don't rate him but Hawks did/do)
2006 they offered picks 24 and 33 but we talked him into staying. The Hawks used the picks on Jarryd Morton and Brent Renouf. Thornton had a great season last year but has been in poor form and looked a bit soft this year. Good player if he has a good hard look at himself and gets some intensity about him.
