Edit: I'm going to book myself an appointment with my local GP for a check up this week. Protate, melanoma and pregnancy. But seriously, the first 2 for every male in their 40's becomes very important to check your health.

I think everyone should make this a priority. It's never too late.

Now, I know he isn't a crows player and a player at a rival club, but can we do anything?

After everything that happened last year, we as a footy club know what pain feels like. Then add that to the loss of Dean Bailey and we just know the devastation of cancer.

Now, I'm not saying he is dead or isn't going to fight or this is terminal but cancer is a mother *er. The more people do, the quicker a ay to beat this illness.

Last year, the footy community rallied around and put their collective arm around out shoulder and supported us as a club and footy community. Now it's our turn to do the same thing for the Hawks. Is there anything we can do?

Should we as a group of supporters simply do something - https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/standupforrough-2nd-minute-2-quarter-friday-night.1133019/ as an example.

Or should the club put something (sportsman night or charity event) and raise money for cancer?

The most important thing we can do - especially men - is check ourselves.

I know I come from a generation of Aussies who spent days and weeks and months at the beach or outside in nothing but shorts. I played cricket without a helmet or cap. My time bomb may be ticking and I check all my moles and spots that don't go away.

What can we do? Make sure another family doesn't go through what the Roughead and Hawthorn family is going through

It is a nice sentiment. I would prefer as a club we wish him the best of luck and leave it at that. I don't think it is disrespectful at all to let him be for the moment. I think as an AFL community we will show support in these times.

I guess, as long as they know they are not alone.

Knowing others are thinking and praying (if you are that way inclined) for you, is a nice feeling.

I don't mind what the MMM (Adelaide) boys do, or did last year by getting a group of men together and having a check up and then a beer.

If only th club had contacts with someone who had some pull at a bunch of Adelaide pubs ...

Even if Nothing else come from this, I think AFL clubs send a message to every male member to get a check up. A massive benefit can come from this as many won't or don't go to the doctor.

I implore each and every one of you, go to the doctor each year and have a checkup. Don't fear it but embrace it. You can only deal with any health issue, if you know it exists. Trust me, been there done that and it saved my life. Sticking ones head in the sand only means more pain later on.

For Roughy, it will be a long journey and hoping that it all works well for him.

Really puts football into perspective doesn't it.. Damn I'm shattered, I love Roughy, this isn't good.
What can we do? Donate for cancer research, its really sad, Jarryd's only 29 years old.

Forget money as its tight for too many people and footy is for the average family but we should be able to do something.

It's very sad. I think the message is to get checked. I've had regular six monthly check-ups with a dermatologist for the last 30 years, as I have fair skin. I've had many non-melanoma skin cancers removed. Also regular colonoscopies, as there's a history of bowel cancer in the family.

Other than that, I guess we can leave a message of support at the Hawthorn board.

ETA: Donating money to a cancer research charity sounds good, but I always wonder how much actually gets to where it's supposed to do the most good. (A lot of money gets siphoned off along the way.)

I haven't had a full check up since 2013.. definitely due for the works.

Maybe for the Hawks vs Richmond round 18 clash at the G they can turn it into something special? to raise money and awareness etc? have Footy personalities get involved like they did last year for Neale Daniher round.

Half of my family have had skin cancer. A few ridiculously obvious but simple things you can and should be doing:

* Stay out of the sun as much as possible
* Do your best to avoid getting sunburnt
* Wear suncream

It's half way through May and i'm still wearing suncream when I go out during the day. I also take a big bottle of it to my games on a Saturday/Sunday afternoon so that anyone else can use it too.

It horrifies me that sunburn is still laughed at and often treated as some kind of badge of honour.

Skin Cancer Checks : Do have regular check ups. Also be aware that some are not easily visible. I had a melanoma on the crown of my head. Spotted by a hair dresser as an unusual growth to get checked out. Get your partner to check your back and other blind areas as well.
I've had up to 4 removed annually --non Mel. Only one in the last year. I go every 6 - 12 months depending on what the specialist wants to keep an eye on or if I discover new growths.
Don't go to tanning salons !!!!
Roughy and family must be going through hell.

Some of you might remember that hypothetically Roughey was the player I would most like to poach to join the Crows some years ago - and still is. This very serious news is really worrying for Roughey. Prayers for him and the HFC and anyone who hasn't been checked get cracking.

My lecturer at uni always says she loves it when celebrities get a cancer (in this case melanoma) or an illness, purely because of the uprising of people wanting to get themselves checked to make sure everything's all clear.
All the best to Roughy, and go get yourselves checked people.

It's spread to his internal organs which is obviously shockingly bad news, good luck Roughie.

Maybe Hawthorn can get involved with Slip Slop Slap , have a Skin Cancer Check Bus outside each home game in Melbourne. Ask each state to provide a bus for away games
