ST KILDA defender Sam Gilbert says Jarryn Geary would be his choice as the Saints' next captain when skipper Nick Riewoldt eventually hands over the reins.

"He has got very good leadership. He speaks very well in front of the group. He speaks at the right time and I really like the way he goes about his footy," Gilbert said.

This year he's gone to work on Eddie Betts, Cyril, Jeff Garlett, Ballantyne and Fasolo and beaten them. Loves a contest.

One thing we overlook is his courage going for marks. In this video (at the 1 minute mark) he's acknowledged for taking one of his most courageous marks.

Go Gears! :thumbsu:

If you ask Jarryn Geary to give you 100%, he will give you 110% time and time again.

He finished tonight's victory with:
  • 20 disposals ( kicks, 8 handballs)
  • 6 contested possessions
  • 6 marks (1 contested)
  • 2 tackles
  • 2 inside 50s
  • 4 rebound 50s
  • 1 clearance
Now let's have a look at his stats for 2016. In 17 games, he is averaging:
  • 15 disposals (8 kicks, 8 handballs)
  • 3 marks (1 contested)
  • 2 tackles
  • 3 rebound 50s
  • 3 score involvements
  • 1 inside 50

To say that I am a proud advocate is an understatement.

Stellar year continues for underrated Geary

He may generate minimal fanfare on the outside, but inside the four walls Jarryn Geary is one of the more highly regarded players at St Kilda. Once again on Saturday night he was assigned the opposition’s most dangerous small forward and nullified him.

This week’s victim was in-form goal sneak Lindsay Thomas, who after kicking five goals the week earlier, posed a significant threat at the feet of Drew Petrie, Jarrad Waite and Ben Brown. At Etihad Stadium, Geary shut Thomas down, holding him to just eight disposals and a goal, adding the North Melbourne star to his list of scalps this season.

The unheralded small defender has now beaten Eddie Betts (Round 11), Daniel Menzel (Round 14) and Jeff Garlett (Round 17) in telling roles in the last two months. After 19 rounds, it would be little surprise to see Geary sitting inside the top-five of the Trevor Barker Award.

A nice article about

after his late withdrawal from the Sydney game.

Jarryn Geary has done a number on a handful of the premier goal sneaks in the game this season. He's nullified Cyril Rioli, Brent Harvey, Michael Walters, Lindsay Thomas and Daniel Menzel. And then there was that performance on the best small forward in the game, Eddie Betts. It's a role he hasn't always performed, but it's one he thoroughly enjoys executing as part of an evolving back six.

In the big loss against Adelaide in Round 11, with injury carnage to key defenders and an enormous inside 50 discrepancy, the Saints leader quelled the influence of the premier small forward in the land, Eddie Betts. While the Crows kicked 19 goals for the day, Betts was held to just a single goal.

The middle stage of the year is where Geary reigns supreme. Look for the games where he performed crucial roles. Round 11 is the pick of the bunch, but the week earlier against former All Australian Hayden Ballantyne and the lively Michael Walters was top notch. As was his effort on Daniel Menzel in Round 14 and Jeff Garlett in Round 17. And just like in Adelaide, Geary was one of only a few to stand tall in the disappointing performance against Gold Coast in Round 15.
Gears has been listed as a contender (and rightly so) for the Trevor Barker Award, which will be awarded tomorrow night.

What a fantastic way to end a stellar year, with a 2nd place finish in our Trevor Barker Award (on top of winning the Lenny Hayes Trademark Award). He has been an absolute pleasure to advocate for, and I wish him all the best for the 2017 season and beyond.

Once again, congratulations Jarryn Geary!
