Could NOT disagree any more. We lost a lot of hard nuts this year in Hudson, Roo, Torney, Mattner.... The LAST thing the club will need is to push out its hard nuts out of the side. What you are left with is a bunch of receivers and no one to put the body on the line.

Shirley is a dead set certainty to get game next year and plenty of them. He will be an integral role player for us next year. With the departures we have had in the last week, if anything, Shirley's value to us has just increased!

Gotta agree there Stiffy. I like Shirley but i don't love him. However, given our list balance we will need him in the packs (or someone like him...?Campbell). Be interesting to see how we go in the clearances this year...different lead ruckmen, a few less 'hard nuts' across the ground, a new midfield coach and hopefully a different emphasis on the overall gameplan, more time in the middle to the up and comers...gonna be interesting and is the key point IMO to our finals/flag;) chances.

I said that it could've been shirley ahead of Torney. Hard nut for hard nut. What Torney would give us in his run and creativity, as well as his awesome defensive skills, is far more handy to the side than what Shirley brings, which is and always has been a solid head over the ball type game without being spectacular.

Van Berlo has replaced Shirley as our #1 tagger. One genuine tagger is enough, particularly when Edwards/Goodwin/McLeod do the occasional job, and will do even more so as the younger midfielders get a run, which they should. Which brings me to my next point...

Douglas is a hard nut. Campbell is also a hard nut. Both should be given the opportunity to play ahead of Shirley next year (obviously whether or not they prove themselves is another story) and they have something that Shirley doesn't have - an angry head (more so Campbell), which will be an asset to the side.

So, then we'd have Torney (defensive), Van Berlo (midfield/defensive), Douglas (midfield/attacking) and Campbell (attacking/midfield). Shirley wont fit into the team balance, and so wouldn't get a game if Torney stayed. He would be there merely as a backup for injuries to the above players, which a good player picked up in the draft should be given the opportunity to do anyway.

But as we know, Torney went, so its Shirley in the lineup instead of him. As I said, my problem is that it was Torney instead of Shirley or Doughty, not that all of them should go.

We will agree to disagree because regardless of who went or who stayed Shirley was ALWAYS going to get regular games because he gives us something that no one else does. He has always been under-rated on this board and I don't see that stopping. Just as I don't see him not getting regular games next year.

I was shocked and gutted when I heard. Given time to reflect I can see why the move would be made but I still don't think that its correct. He has had an excellent year and always put his body on the line for the Club.

Given the other delistings I think we have got shot of enough players without adding Torney to the list.

Who would have thought we would get so much more out of Jason Torney than we ever did out of Wayne Carey.

Thanks Jason, you will be sadly missed.:(

Shirley is a hack, He is a shocking kick and unreliable as a tagger. The fact that JT was delisted ahead of him shows that NC has his favourites. Maybe Shirly was great on a bike and JT wasn't> I cannoot for the life of me figure out waht RS has over JT.

Completely different players, cannot really argue one over the other.

I am pretty disappointed the club delisted Torney, infact disappointed with a few of the delistings. But saying why was it Torney over Shirley is silly. Shirley doesn't get picked in the side to get possessions and dominate games, he is in to shut opposition players down. I'm not Shirley's biggest fan, but he isn't a bad tagger. He remains on the list to shut other players down.

I argue, and have always argued, that there isn't room in a modern day footy side for a pure tagger (ie Shirley), he in my opinion needs to make 2008 the year he emerged as much more than just a tagger, or else I don't want him in my 22.

Has had a very strange career.Like you guys we really rated Torney and then....gone.I can't believe he has been delisted.Really good dependable player.

To be honest i wasn't the biggest Tourney fan but didn't see him being a chance of being delisted. When he was on he was great to watch, and did many good things (QF 2006). Be good to see him play on somewhere else but theres little chance of that.

Do you speak, as well as type, English with a Scottish brogue? ;)

Yep, that's me, with varying degrees of less hair on top, and more hair on the chin, oh I should say a lot more grey now

Anyone else wanna post their picture?

Very poorly handled by the Crows. Where's his send off? Can't beleive they just gave him the boot. Saying this there's been alot of players that have been harshly delt with this year such as Whitnal who has served Carlton very well over the years, and not even a send off game or a thankyou.
