Has had a great year really - has come into a new team and made an immediate impact and has improved as the year progressed. The only thing letting him down early on were some 'marks he should have taken' and one or two easy shots missed. Second efforts and pressure inside 50 have been setting an example.

Looked like he was grabbing for his right hammy a couple of times yesterday? Hope he pulls up alright to play his old club his week.

It's kinda funny how a change in playstyle can have all the effect on a talented player. He was an alright ruck but he's seized playing at full forward with both hands.

..... I don't think he hit up as well as he has today, nor did we put the ball out in front of him for him to lead into. Still his work at the top of the square is just excellent. .......
One thing that was noticeably different yesterday from the Choco game plan was that rather than holding the ball up and looking for that perfect pass into the forward 50 giving the opposition plenty of time to get numbers back we bombed it to the top of the square and had faith in Shulz, and to a lesser extent Gray, to mark or bring the ball to ground for the crumbers.

i kept hearing that his kicking was doddy

from what i can see he has a set routine, and runs in a little differently than most, but his goal kicking has been very very good.

I feel confident with the ball in his hands from anywhere which is more than i can say for most of our forwards

He looked shakey at the start of the year, but he has imporved immensely, bit like his overall form.

Hopefully he doesn't beat himself up too much

I agree, by far our most reliable set shot for goal. Five without a miss yesterday, 7.1 against North Melbourne in round 13. There are only two games this year where he has kicked more points then goals, round 1 0.1 against North Melbourne and 1.2 against Melbourne in Darwin.

He has a very consistent set shot routine, and that is why he kicks a lot of goals. Kids could learn a lot from him.

Fantastic FF.

No surprise that when Schulz kicked 7 - Ebert wasn't playing. When Schulz kicked 5 yesterday Ebert was off the ground for 3.5 quarters. Schulz did kick 4.2 against the Hawks when Ebert was playing.

Tredders wasn't in the side in any of those 3 games.

Prior to this year the only other game he has kicked more than 3 goals was in a game was against Brisbane in 2004. And surprise, surprise, Richo didn't play in that game.

At the start of the year I was impressed by the contests he would make. I couldn't believe the lack of free kicks he got. He was smashed in the head against North and Brisbane in the first two games at Footy Park up on the wing and the umpire was in a good position to see them. I wasn't impressed with his dropped marks and fumbles and his kicking for goal was shaky. That's why I wondered if he could make a big contribution to us and be anything more than the third tall in our forward lines.

But since he was dropped and came back for the North Melbourne game he has been very good and showed that he was more than worth trading for. I saw Schulz as our third tall. But the way he has played in the second half of the year suggests may be he will be part of the answer to us finding a KFP or two.

Schulz is a classic confidence player ie he appears to lack self confidence. He has done well against some of the poorer defensive teams. That's ok because it still builds up his confidence. At 25 he is starting to come into his prime. He now has to have big games against the better defenders and defensive teams. I hope he continues to play with confidence, has a big preseason and becomes part of the answer to our forward line post Tredders.

It also is a pointer to Primus or whoever becomes coach that Ebert - long term knee injury or LARS operation - has to be moved up the ground and not be our main go to forward. Daniel Stewart also played well yesterday when we went long to him and a couple of times the crumbers goaled from his contested mark spillages.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if he kicks more goals than Reiwoldt next week.

I wouldn't be surprised, he'll probably end up playing on a 3rd gamer, whereas Riewoldt will be probably end up on Chaplin, and if the last few months is anything to go by, 2 or so other members of your defense.

I'm sure that you would know REH, that there was a big article on Schulz re his self-confidence problems earlier this year - a real eye-opener.

If not I am sure someone here can find it and link it - I would, but I don't remember where it was and to do that linky stuff.

Schulz talked about it 2 weeks ago at a presser at Alberton. This story on the clubs web site talks about it and has the PTV link where you can hear him talk about his lack of confidence in the past.

The goalkicker has struggled for confidence throughout his 84-game career and sees a psychologist on a weekly basis to help him battle his mental demons.

He openly admits to being his own worst critic, but says he's slowly learning to focus more on the positives.

"Confidence is a funny thing and it's a very hard feeling sometimes. The main thing with me is not getting too down on myself when I'm not going so well," Schulz said.

"Even during games now when I've been playing better footy I haven't been having good quarters, but I find that I'm thinking a different way now [to what I would have in the past].

"I'm feeling like I'm still in it and not wasted for the rest of the game. I feel like I can still fight my way back in and give something to the team when I'm out there."

There was a much more extensive article in the tiser, but I don't think it ever made it online.

Which is odd, because his kicking for goal was shocking at Richmond. Guess it just shows that it's all down to confidence.

When he first started he was a dead eye dick, then his accuracy dropped away.

Good to see him doing well, he'd be handy next to Jack in our forward line, but it was time for him to move on, he needed a new environment.

He was 8.7, missed some absolute sitters and didn't even score with a few shots. But since he came back from being droped and played in the rd 13 game against North and kicked 7.1 and the 1 point was a poster, he has kicked 25.5. He has kicked really well in that period, although I am not overly confident with that Michael Holding run up of his.

i used to think that too but he seems to get into a very good rhythm with that run up and his kicking action is really smooth and confident

i spoke to him about it at the traning facility launch and said that he has always been a pretty good kick for goal but he did attribute alot of his improvement this year in that department to Jason Cripps. He said that he has been an enormous help to his confidence and his kicking

Just out of interest he also spoke about how he hated his last 2 years at Richmond to the point that he lost interest in playing football, and now he is at Port he is really enjoying his football again. He loves being back in Adelaide and loves playing for Port. Said he really wanted to come to Port a couple of seasons but couldnt talk Richmond into letting him go (well not for what Port offered)

He also said he does miss Victoria as its just as much home to him as Adelaide is (he left to go there when he was 17), and he misses his mates from Vic, but it is good to be home back in Adelaide with family and friends.

He's a really nice bloke and i had a good chat to him.

Really like what he brings to the table

One more toast for Schulzy for 2010, congrats on a top ten finish in the club BnF. Terrific recognition in a year where he really set about establishing himself as an AFL footballer. :thumbsu:
