Toast Jay Schulz

I heard Schulz inteviewed on ABC 891 after the game and he said that at the end of last year Hardwick told him he needed to play in a different environment and that there'd been interest from a number of other clubs.

I wonder if we would have traded Farmer away if Choco had not been reappointed last year but I guess we traded for need as did Richmond. You'd give Schulz a pass this year despite a rocky patch which saw him dropped.

He's probably got the rest of this year and most of next to firmly establish himself. If Butcher becomes the player we think he can be there's going to be less room for Jay, Westhoff and Stewart.

...and wouldn't that be a great situation to be in? It opens up all sort of possibilities for depth and other positional moves.

Has set a standard for himself now. With his attributes, size, aggression and workrate there's no reason why he can't continue to meet it. Couldn't at Richmond with some similar prickteasing performances, but yeah, we're not Richmond are we? ;)

Dives on the ball too often and when he doesnt mark the ball he lets it slip through behind the contest, like a few of our forwards. These are the only criticisms of his game. A good forward like tredders brings it down in front of them at the worst.
But very good effort. I like the stewart, schultz combo, it worked allright in the nab cup. Schultz could prove to be an excellent stop gap to fill tredders gap until butcher/ trengove/ westhoff develop.

I think Schulz's diving on the ball is fantastic. He's a tall player you can't expect him to pick the ball up of the turf at full speed with Leon Davis-like precision while under pressure. He'll dive on the ball and either get a handball out or knock it to advantage. He goes head first too, which allows him to get to the ball before his opponents.

I would've started this thread if it hadn't been done already. Schulzy, I was wrong and I'm thrilled to say it. If you can keep it up (and I'm starting to believe you can) I look forward to you holding down full forward at the PAFC for the next 5 years. He was 2004 Tredrea-esque yesterday.

Schulz's style and physique is suited to being the goto KPP.
Bit hard to play to your strength on a consistent basis when he was second fiddle to Richo first and then Tredrea later.

Well done Schulzy :thumbsu:

I agree.

He actually wins a surprising number of "push in the back" frees when he dives on the ball as he dives under his opponent who otherwise would beat him to the ball. It's not as if he dives on the ball when he is in the clear.

Let's face it, as evidenced early in the game, if Schulz is standing up with Hawthorn opponents swinging off his neck like cheap gold and brown jewellery, he won't get a free kick (all year I've had the impression that opposition players could whack Schulz with a shovel on the field and the umpire would call play on) so he may as well dive on the ball and see how that works out for him.

Shulz has certainly taken over from Tredrea in that regard. :(

I'll put my hand up. Couldn't see why he was getting a game. I was wrrrrr......wrrrrrrr......wrrrrrrrr.....wrong.

Me too. I couldn't see why we traded for him in the first place. Clearly, he is of some value to us. Maybe a lot.
So wrong :o

Playing from deep as our #1 forward, he is the best option we have. Unbelievable hands, kicking well, works damn hard. While Butcher develops, I'm very glad to have him.

I think I posted after his first couple of games that he looks like an 'almost' player - he 'almost' marks it and he 'almost' kicks the goal...

Since he has come back he has turned the 'almost' into actual marks and goals. Coupled with his unquestionable work ethic he suddenly looks like a player. Well done to him!

Heard one of his ex-teammates say that he has always been a talent but he just didn't have any confidence in himself. If we can keep his confidence up the sky is the limit...

Considering how low I rated him at the start of the year, if he's performing well enough for me to have confidence in him then surely his own confidence must be sky-high. If it wasn't, he wouldn't keep flying for speccies :D

All hail Sergeant Schulz!

I was definitely one to question his position in the team and his abilities earlier in the season... and I stand by those earlier comments. Tredrea getting injured was the best thing to have happened for Schulz... until then their styles were similar and quite often they (with their defenders) were running in to each others space. With Westhoff playing Wing/Ruck, D Stewart not playing and Salter not playing... our forward line of Ebert, Davenport, Hitchcock, Schulz and Tredrea was not functioning (even when winning). I unashamedly wanted Salter and Stewart in as a stay at home FF to give us better structure.

I still wasn't sold on his 7 goal performance... I mean it was a wide open game, played inside and even Hansen kicked 8 goals IIRC for NM. No doubt he did his job that day, but he was well fed on the lead and he kicked straight in perfect conditions. Par for the course IMO.

However, firstly since Tredrea went down, with Stewart and Westhoff now permanently forward... and more importantly a refocused direction of less backwards passing and more long, driect attacks... the entire forward structure looks better. Talls forwards leading up the field, but one remains back closer to goals, Hitchcock, Gray and Ebert buzzing around the feet. Schulz has definitely benefited from this with his own defined role.

No doubt his game against Hawthorn was his best to date and to me finally proved that he can work in our team... now we have a better setup and game style.

The only thing I would like to point out is that Hawthorn have one of the worst 1-on-1 defenses in the league and have had so for a few years. I mean Gilham is about their best rated tall defender and he isn't much chop.

Don't forget Ben Holland!

I realise it can sound like carping sour grapes when you compare Schulz (or Tredrea!) to Riewoldt and how easily the Saints man gets frees, but ffs. How many times was it blatantly obvious Jay was being manhandled, boofed, probed, only for the umpire to apathetically wave play on?

And you look at that compared to the disgusting free kick their ruckman got after a minor retaliatory push from Trenners... ahh...

For a guy who was struggling to make Richmond's team and had to endure our schizophrenic forward set up this year he can hold his head high:thumbsu:

The Rebirth Of Schulz
.... The goalkicker has struggled for confidence throughout his 84-game career and sees a psychologist on a weekly basis to help him battle his mental demons. ....
The Rebirth Of Schulz

Maybe the club could do a deal for group discount. We must have the highest percentage of "head case" players in the AFL. I initially believed that the work Jenny Williams and Jan Stirling had done at the club had gone a long way to rectifying these issues but what ever they were doing stopped working at about round 7.

The Rebirth Of Schulz

It's also denied Schulz a chance to continue his burgeoning career as a rookie elephant keeper - the Adelaide Zoo doesn't have any elephants - but regardless he says he's enjoying every minute of his time with the Power.

The Rebirth Of Schulz

I thought there were plenty of elephants down at alberton....;)

I think we may have even had some good words GoPower?

I'll give this baby a bump.

Another great game from The Sarge.

His work rate, kicking for goal and contested efforts have been super. I don't think he hit up as well as he has today, nor did we put the ball out in front of him for him to lead into. Still his work at the top of the square is just excellent. A very good debut season for us.:thumbsu:

Has been fantastic this year. Had a bad patch early in the year but to his credit he worked hard and came back with a new mind set and confidence. Well done Schulz on a great year. Hope you can get 50+ goals next year:thumbsu:

Most people would have been happy with a return of 2 goals for Schulz this season. Given he's played 15 games and kicked 33 for a return of 2.2 per game for the year (3.2 for his last 8) that's quite pleasing from Sarge.

I am hopeful that 2011 may bring some consistency to his game and he's kept at Full Forward for his contested marking ability.
