Jayden Pitt

The way people excuse Pitt's poor AFL form you'd think he wasn't struggling for a kick in one of the worst teams in the WAFL.

can't you excuse a kid's form as he finds his feet? in the longview, his current form is going to be a blip along the trajectory towards his radness.

I sure can, but what position does he play that we so desperately need to fill now or in five years time?

If he comes good, so what? Another tallish flanker type who can play in the middle in five years time. Goodo.

he's a midfielder in the pendlebury mould. should have his body right with a couple more preseasons into him. i'm happy to have depth and competition in the midfield, and don't begrudge the club for drafting him but agree that we need to draft KPP at the end of the year. We tried to do that with Faulks and JA to a degree, but neither have come on yet.

We have been spoilt since 2007 we have always had a guy make an impact in year 1, well not everyone comes as a ready made AFL player.

Well this year Pitt is simply a piece of the puzzle. A 190 cm, footy smart kid who has the ability to kick goals piece of the puzzle.

You don't lose ability and I would be thinking he would be a candidate for a 2nd or 3rd year breakout along with some more weight and core strength.

If Pitt does get going next year it would be good to see him in a full strength midfield. To be top 2 team next season we need at least two more quality players in our midfield rotation.

If we can get a team out there with De Boer and Lower up to do a job then the five of Barlow, Fyfe, Hill, Mora and Mundy is a great core. However in AFL today you need to run the rotations and so midfield depth and creativity is a must.

Pitt and if we deal with GWS - we might just land another walk up starter.

I think if we can get a full strength team out there running with Barlow and Mundy on each shoulder would be a learning experience in itself.

Other than Clay I don't think anyone is suggesting he can't play, more (like me) a bit puzzled we didn't take a KPP or someone a little more ready to go given our 3 best players are in their last years.
No one could have anticipated the depth of our injury list & certainly I remember Lloyd saying we had the luxury last year of taking someone we could develop.
So, at least in my case, pretty happy that he will be a decent player, just curious about the rationale behind the pick. It's an interesting conversation.

I think we're now past the days where we recruit for an instant premiership. We're all about "sustained success" now.

This is exactly right. Couldnt have said it better myself.

in 07' we recuited a couple of guys because we thought our window was open and failed dismally. It always has to be about the future as only this will deliver sustained success. Pav's big on his sustained success to so i reckon its a fair point

Umm, they were big named trades that we heavily over paid for. Less to do with recruiting for the now as a philosophy (of which there is nothing intrinsically wrong, so long as the now is when you're realistically in the frame of winning a premiership), than overpaying for players who neither suit a need or want to play for Freo.

I sincerley hope Pitty puts on a clinic next year+. Then ill look forward to you eating a big slice of humble pie

Sure but that's not the same as drafting an 18YO who can play now and will still be playing in 10 years. Fasolo looks plug & play, local boy. The fact the Pies took him suggests he'll be good, they don't pick many duds.

I understand the concept of best available and obviously our boys thought Pitt was just that.

I just want to make it absolutely clear I like the look of Pitt, think he has class stamped all over him. You can ask Lach & Esti how much I liked him in the pre-season games.

Such an outlandish statement. When you're playing in a top team, you can look better than you really are.

As for the "we should have picked someone ready" argument.. we can't just pick for the next 2 years, because who says that we will get close to a flag with someone like a Darling? We're picking for the sustained future and we will continue that way, not for the 2012/13 season and that's it. Remember what happened when we took the mature bodied Leigh Brown over Darren Glass?

If you think about the last draft period we still did really well.

Mzungu, Lower, Pitt, Michie (who i think looked the best of all), Mellington, Faulks et al is a pretty talented bunch.

Too many people are all doom and gloom, if we haven't won a premiership in a couple of years i don't think that's automatically door closed.

Instead of being reliant on winning a premiership off the back of 3 stars (Sandi, Pav & McPharlin) I think the door is open to win one off the back of Hill, Fyfe, Barlow, Mundy, Morabito, Ballantyne as well as a stronger core of 2nd tier players like Clarke, Broughton, Suban, Mayne et al

While the lack of key position backs is a worry it's still something we can address in the next few years and be a strong contender in 2 to 3 years.

Personally I think the premiership window is going to be wider in 2-3 years than it is now.

I think you get to be a top team because the players in it are good yes? Collingwood's drafting has been top shelf for years, that's one reason why they are the best team. Ergo pretty good odds Fasolo will be at least handy?

I don't even know how I got into this argument. I like Pitt and don't necessarily think we should have drafted plug & play. I'm just having a conversation so I think I'll bow out at this point.

He will be handy.. but just like Schammer and Peake were handy when we were up and running. Bit players that can play a role, but you can't have too many in a side or you end up as bad as we were 2 years back. Collingwood have a bunch of elite players that make them as good as they are, then the others come in and feed off of it and play what looks like an elite level. I'm not saying Fasolo won't be elite, just that its hard to judge him now. We need to be getting that crop of elite players, bigger than the 6 players we currently have (Hill, Mundy, Barlow, Sandi, McPharlin and Pav).

I was surprised we passed on Darling at pick 20+ whatever. It seemed a steal. And all the talk immediately turned to his apparent attitude and off-field persona etc etc.

But sheesh, these kids are 17/18 years old? A lot of teenagers are tools but grow up to be semi-decent adults. So I would have hoped the club would have backed itself to make a decent man of the alleged mischievous kid.

I'm surprised the club baulked at the idea of drafting Darling who obviously is tall and strong-bodied - something of which we are in short supply. On the other hand, maybe Pitt will turn out to be the "best kick of the draft"? Who knows, but you need to be able to get the pill first to be able to kick it.

I (and everyone else) immediately accepted Hill over Rich. This one, however, aint so clear. Not in a long shot.

What he said.

But I would add Broughton to the first bunch, I reckon he will lift into elite by the end of next year or slightly after.

we had such a massive clean out in 2008 & 2009, which has given us the chance to draft a project player (has been mentioned previously).this kid has to be given time. I'm confident we will have an elite kicker, which bodes well for the modern game.
