would need to improve 500% onn what he has shown so far...is not completely inconcievable that he could step up as TV is when many wrote him off, but he seems to be slipping rather than taking his chances. i'm doubting he is the answer unfortunately. Boy i wish we had Mckernan as he looks every bit a 200 game player

ive seen a few coburg games and he lacks urgency,,, also he has poor awareness and he is always being told from the bench where to run to and where to position himself....I think it might be a classic case of great under 18s but just struggles to make it to the next level..

He was also an over-age TAC cup player so he had a further year of development ahead of everyone else at that level.

I too wanted McKernan before post and was a bit upset at the time when we missed out on him. Post seemed to be the "bolter" in that draft and went higher because of his performances in the TAC cup finals.

Although I didn't see the game yesterday, I reckon Post can still become a good player. He has shown in glimpses that he is very strong in the air with his marking and even if he doesn't mark it he rarely lets the opposition outmark him.
Watching him play against Adelaide a few weeks ago I saw that he can actually kick a goal from 50m so that's another plus.

He isn't very quick so he will have to improve his endurance considerably to make up for it. At the moment his endurance lets him down so he is unable to make multiple leads. He looks a bit lean at the moment and I would like him to put on a bit more muscle and gain more strength.

I am more than happy for Richmond to keep him on for this year and next and wait for him to become better physically which in turn should lead to increased confidence and form.

Still too early to tell, you could run to the right spots all day at VFL level and still not get hit with a decent pass as most of the VFL listed players couldn't dispose of an apple core let alone a sherrin.

It's hard for the big guys in this league there are not many who can completely dominate and i think that's what people are expecting from Posty.

In reality if he can take a few marks and kick a few goals, plus some hit outs then i think he is on track

Agree, way too early to tell. The coaching staff need to simplify things for him IMHO. Even though players are professional, not all of them have a high football IQ. Play him in one position and teach him everything about that position at AFL level. His position is CHB, not CHF in an average VFL side. Not convinced he will make it but I am convinced that he is not a CHF. By the way, giving Astbury's form this year, I wonder how long before we see a similar thread for him? We burn players way too quickly nowadays.

White on Rioli? He has already added Garlett and Montagnas scalp to his list so far. Playing career best footy and with his pace and stamina would be ideal for Cyril

lol career best form how wonderful. played on a player as a defensive forward yarran by the way where the ball hardly went forward for 3 quarters.
granted he did a decent job on montagna but still the two main criticisms remain. poor decision/disposal and just does not get enough of the ball even for a tagger. in fact his ave is just 2 possesions a game less as a tagger down to 10 from his career ave 12. no wonder we have had to find a role for him to do.

anyway if hes such a good tagger why not hayes or milne or murphy or betts.
nope im sorry a glass half full is a glass half full.

With posty playing poorly, and thursfield pretty bad too, who comes in for McGuane? I have a feeling we are going to get chopped to bits by hawthorn's key forwards unless it rains.

I think they will bring either Thursfeild or Grimes, or both, Grimes looked pretty composed and he looks like a compeditor.

To think that McKernan spent over 90% of his first two seasons playing for bottom club South Adelaide.

He is currently competing for a KPF opportunity against the likes of Tippet and Walker.

If we had chosen him over Post, I am almost certain before this season, he would have amassed some 35-40 matches in the Black & Gold by now!

Post is interesting. In his first year showed he is very athletic and has talent. Since putting on weight he really has struggled. He was the best mark in the TAC and that has deserted him. He's a bit like TV, has the tools ot be very good. But can he show it regulalry at AFL level?

I hope he is just down on confidence and comes good, because he has real talent. most talls take 4 years for you to know. the coachins staff will know whether he really tries hard and can develop. If he isn't trying then he's toast. If it's bad luck then give him more time.

dont worry bout posty hes still very much in the development stage of his carreer physically and mentally give him 2 ta 3 years will b a very important player to rfc will become one of the best contested marks in the comp b patient

In Melbourne for holidays so thought it was a must to see my first Coburg game, with special interests in Jayden Post and Dylan Grimes. Let me just say if it wasn’t for that big mark and nice pass by Post i would of left thinking he’s in trouble. He was really sloppy in disposal and made all kinds of errors during the day. Still, I'll give him some more time as I liked his last couple of games at the end of last year.

On the other hand Grimes will be our best tall defender hands down.

Tipping that Post is one of those kids who hasnt come to grips or has to come to grips with the growth of his body. He has grown into a pretty big unit over the last year and seems to be struggling to get his brain to understand what has changed. ;)

he's a tall, needs to be given 4 years for development. these days with afl clubs they are almost afraid to offload a player who was a relatively high draft, not overly sure but it was late 20s.

Watching on the Couch last night Paul Roos mentioned on more than one occassion that although the TAC is a great system to pick future players from there is a massive gap between that and AFL that a lot of kids struggle with as their athletic abilities will only take them so far. He also stressed that KPP take a long time to develop.

I cant help but think thats Jayden, he is struggling with the pace and reading of play, all the zone work that is required in todays footy. Roos also mentioned how important that a youngster is given time in the reserves to find himself and doesnt believe in playing a young guy for the sake of it.

I think we need to persist with Jayden for this season and possibly next if he doesnt even improve slightly then time to move on as I believe 3 or 4 seasons in the reserves is a decent time to evaluate whether the kid has the foundations to become a decent player.

With his size i would suggest that if he is going to make the grade, he will need to dominate at CHF week in week out. i.e. in the monday hun, his name should appear each week in the goalkickers with at least a 4 next to it.
WHen and if he can get to that level, thats when we ready him over the following pre season for a sustained gig in the 1s.

We have kind of moved away from that type of development over the last 2 decades, more out of desperation to find something. Back when we had a top list, you would have kids kicking bags week in week out in the ressies and you just knew that they were ready. ;)

You sound very sure (which is good). Do you know something we don't or do you know Jayden??;)

P.S I'd like to think your right.

Ah those were the days..."Jacko", "BT", "Benny" ...anyone else?

It's an interesting point. Hawks used to use their 2nds in the 80s as a breeding ground to develop solid role players - McCarthy, Dear (Paul and Greg), Maginness. They could afford to give them plenty of time due to the depth of talent at the top level. Recently clubs like the Crows, Cats, Swans and the Saints really make their kids earn their spots, sometimes I fear it is as a last resort.

Collingwood on the other hand are pumping games into kids and reaping the rewards.

So it's not Rance or Vickery for a change.... Let's pick on Post/Goo time! This thread is based on what??? One VFL game! Posty was good late last year when he got his chance. Be patient he'll make his mark. I agree with the poster who said the zones and structures might be a temporary distraction to his natural flair. He has a combination of physical attributes - height, strength, athleticism - that are all too rare. When he puts it together and you add in confidence, he will be a very good player.

Definitely a part of our future:thumbsu:

He's never shown anything in the forward 50. Wouldn't have even been drafted if he played as a permanent forward.

Put him back into the only position he's ever shown good form in, CHB.

I think you'll find the conversation runs deeper than that. Some people are suggesting three to four years for him to develop, guess what, he's in year three.

I'm still puzzled as to how we got from Hardwick talking Post up as the 2nd ruck/forward option during pre-season, to him apparently getting injured, and now through to people insisting that the coaching staff are unhappy with his pre-season and unhappy with him in general.
