Jumper Development OTW Round 6: Sydney

In AFL football, guernsey designs are sacred. Even minor changes attract an enormous amount of scrutiny from club supporters and the general population alike.

In association football on the other hand, shirt designs change year in year out. Clubs will usually have a broad design that they'll stick to, eg:

- Manchester United wear red shirts, white shorts and black socks.
- Juventus wear black and white stripes
- Barcelona wear deep red and blue stripes

But within those broad design elements, shirt designers are allowed to run wild with ideas. Have a look at Barcelona through the years:

Despite all the home shirts satisfying the "deep red and blue stripes" criteria, they are all different.

Now imagine if the same thing happened in AFL football.

Imagine if Geelong wore a different navy and white hooped guernsey every year. Imagine if Collingwood fans gathered each year at the Westpac Centre to see what their black and white striped guernsey would look like for the upcoming season.

In Jumper Development of the week, you will design these guernseys.

Rules:

- You must design a complete set of jumpers for the chosen team using any template* you wish, and you may use any program you wish.

- A maximum of one entry per person is permitted. Each entry must contain a Home, Clash and Third jumper.

- Design a home playing strip for the nominated club of the round. The home strip should echo the broad design ideas and colours of the current home guernsey of that team, but be unique and creative!

-No use of custom/created logos on jumper designs will be allowed

- Entries will be open for 7 days and voting will take place in the following 7 days.

-Any design issues regarding the rules will be decided upon by Cat_Attack !

-Entries will close on 2/2/14

Redeveloping the yolk and vee designs for this guernsey; but lowering and flattening the chevron. The red kit utilises a white yolk but adds a Swans' red vee to prevent it being a simple invert. The white is a traditional chevron design, but new for the Swans. The third is a clash I've used before, using the colours and Coat of Arms of the City of Sydney.

Excuse my possible ignorance and/or stupidity on the matter but I'm starting to get a little confused with how this comp goes. Are we developing a new kit that still resembles status quo but with enough of a change to seem like your typical football year in year out changes or are we completely redeveloping the grand design of the kits for the selected team?

I apologize if this is something that was addressed in one of the earlier comps. My first contribution in the JDOTW comp was in last week's St Kilda one.

No offence to anyone who's entered, they are all wonderful kits, but going a bit stray is an understatement. For example, were meant to redevelop Sydney's "red guernsey with white yoke and opera house cut out". Last time I checked, the hoops aren't used by Sydney and haven't used them properly since 1904. They did use it as a heritage top in 2011 but it's not a home or away jumper

This is what I'm talking about. BW, this is brilliant! Its an adaptaion on their current clash kit for both your home and clash, with the preseason/heritage (?) an amalgamation of previous dsigns

Do you reckon it would have been better to add the Opera House to my design then? I removed it 'cos thought it took away from the neatness.

To me, either of those look fine. Both of them fit the criteria (IMO) but I'd lean towards the newer ones

It depends how you interpret the criteria:
The home strip should echo the broad design ideas and colours of the current home guernsey of that team, but be unique and creative!
If you consider it just in the context of Sydney's current jumper, you're absolutely right. But if you look at Sydney's jumper in a historical context - essentially a South Melbourne jumper with an Opera House silhouette added - then something like this fulfils that criteria:
