Hasn't that been the status quo since Jeff came in?
I would love it if presidential bluster and comeuppance to AFL leadership could be shown to have some benefit to the club, but i don't see it.
For many years, starting in the 70's, we talked behind closed doors to gain access to change that was club alteringly beneficial. And where it didn't work out - eg Princes Park - we managed to gain a new path by convincing those in charge to get behind our intiative.

I long for those times.
A verbal spanking laid out to the 'The Man' has such fleeting emotional sustenance, currying support to get what we really want fills the belly for much longer.

The games changed, not just on the field either. We currently have the weakest AFL CEO the league has ever had that cannot make a decision. Its why everyone is consulted on every topic. Hence you have power plays and bargaining going on all the time and we tend not to lick balls.

Do you ever recall in the 70s that you speak of whether we were the highest paying taxpayer to consolidated league funds, as we have been for a very long time now? And how do we get treated for that?

Sorry, but as a member of many years I am sick of the AFL taking from the funds that I and every other member contribute directly to our club to support it, and then get the AFL to take it away and then treat us with contempt.

The media has never been an ally so we have no option but to voice our displeasure publicly. This is also how AFL House operates through its chosen media darlings.

I agree with you Flinch, and I wish Jeff hadn't said anything in public (even if I am really pissed at the AFL about our fixture).

Never complain, never explain. Never talk about other clubs. Never discuss internal disputes, Don't individualise. Avoid media, unless defending our own. Humble in victory, gracious in defeat. Be known by our actions. Follow the Kennedy and Jeans legacy etc.

Jeff's spot on about out Sunday fixture,we certainly get the rough end of the pineapple and all the Junior footy are played on Sunday's that also has a impact on crowd attendances.

AFL's love child Collingwood only get two Sunday games.

My family couldn't do Mother's Day until after lunch due to the junior sports we had to attend on Sunday morning. A bit hard to tell the wife I was off to the MCG by myself to watch footy.

Unfortunately, Jeff is fighting an uphill battle. Channel 7 and Fox paid in excess of a billion dollars to the AFL for the TV rights and if Channel 7 wants the football to run straight into the 6 o'clock news, then by gum, the AFL will ensure that happens.

Still, it's great to see that at least one club president isn't going to back down on this.

All clubs liaise constantly with the AFL behind closed doors. Hawthorn does this just as much as anyone.

But Hawthorn gets penalised because we're independent of the AFL's financial teat. There are clubs in the league that cannot wipe their nose after they sneeze without getting the AFL's permission.

So talking behind closed doors sometimes does not result in the outcome we want. I fully support Kennett coming out and publicly giving the AFL a serve over this. It's just as bad as the season when they gave us the other seven top eight teams from the previous season to start the campaign with. The AFL has so many tools at its disposal to manipulate the success (or otherwise) of clubs and it's right for the AFL to be called out on it.

No debate about the legit reasons behind Kennet's serve.

The question is one of culture and efficacy.

I don't think Kennett's public pressure campaign is the Hawthorn way, and not a culture i support. Certainly that culture will die, unless we have a string of egotistic, bombastic and potentially wayward personalities as president in the future (not calling Kennett those things).

On efficacy, if we haven't gotten the results behind closed doors then we failed. It doesn't automatically mean that avenue is flawed.

But i can't support the view that Kennett has lost patience after extended efforts behind closed doors. Kennett is outspoken on issues not impacting Hawthorn, and attacking the AFL. I think the first choice strategy is for him to waive a big stick in public and be feared. It has always been his way.

The best plans are carried out in stealth... like the way Graham Wright conducts our drafting and trading.

I think the 3:20 time is great - makes more sense (than 2:10) to the competition overall as it's worth a lot more to Ch.7 leading into the news

The issue is that we have too many of those matches this year, they need to be better shared around

Fridays & Saturdays get bigger crowds than Sundays and what most people miss is that the corporate functions are significantly better attended on Fridays and Saturdays.

What's the alternative? Sit back and keep copping the reaming from the AFL? That's just embarrassing and I rather a Pres who calls it out and hope that something changes....rather than play "good boy" and just pray for more

The alternative is to be seen to be coming in and out of the AFL headquarters regularly smiling and mentioning positive meetings - not bristling and denegrating those who make the decisions that affect our future, how about hosting AFL management regularly without slagging them at the presidential lunch, or present our position and requirements in a strong intelligent manner that suggests support is good for all, and to make great relationships with other AFL presidents so that individual and overall strategies could be presented to the AFL as having the support of many clubs...
I dunno, be classy and not rip other clubs management and very existence.
Perhaps present ideas to float all boats, not bitch about paying our share.
Ugh, why bother.
You like his style and many/most on here do too. It's like the debate going on here in the States about Trump...if a Republican supporter can't understand what all the fuss from the left and middle is about his words and actions, you aint gonna be able to explain it more clearly that those actions illustrate.

That was the approach under Newbold and Garvey and the Hawks got completely reamed by the AFL with respect to draw, taxes and Tasmania (think Tasmanian academy and AFLW license) despite unprecedented success on and off the field.

Put it this way, we didn’t start playing home games at Marvel (under the 7-4 agreement) until Kennett left in 2010 (our first Marvel home game since 2006 was in 2013)

The great irony is that we actually did the AFL a favour in 2006 when we took on the St Kilda home games

We did that and it didn't work

This! We tried the softly softly approach - it didn’t work.

Collingwood continually get favourable draws and their President is the mouthiest campaigner out there. Happy with the bombastic approach - call it out and let it be known that we won’t quietly accept the s**t we get handed by an organisation we handsomely pay taxes to.

Our fixture when initially handed down had us having our first home game at Marvel against the Dogs.
Behind closed doors we argued that we were the only club who didn't have a home game at our home ground in the first two rounds.

I wonder if we had as many Sunday 3:20 slots to start the year in that version of the fixture.

We did do our complaining behind closed doors. When the fixture was announced our CEO expressed his disappointment with the fixture, and since then we've been pretty quiet on it. Until the media started in on us this week regarding our Mother's Day crowd.

Our crowds have been poor, no question, we also copped a lot of Sunday games to start the season and our numbers were slowly declining. We get a Saturday game and boom over 40k, but then we dish up that game against Melbourne leading into Mother's day and suddenly it's all about how we never show up.

Jeff's come out after that basically saying don't blame the supporters, blame the fixture.

I wonder if he would have said anything if the media had just focused on the game

If the Sunday 3.20 games are a must have for the TV rights money... Then so be it.

But... Share it around so that each club gets a little pain.

Instead of one club getting it all.

I agree with Jeff. Clearly the AFL is making some pissy statement that nobody understands.

I say roll over, grease up and take it with the look of a whipped puppy dog. We’re lucky to have the AFL to play in. Whatever scraps they give us are more than we deserve.

We should have merged with Melbourne like the AFL wanted and would have if it had stayed behind closed doors. Stupid Don Scott and his uppity, noisy ways. Can’t stand people like that.

Ok everyone who has been accused of wearing a tinfoil hat. Put them away. If our club President thinks the AFL stinks that is good enough for me. It has been plainly obvious for years with the FIXture, Tasmania arrangement etc. The socialist AFL model is alive and well.

It would be nice if the clubs said fu. Problem is the weaker clubs have their nuts in a vice. Starting to look like we do too and the squeeze is starting.

Ps Vote labor on the weekend if you are enamored with this model of Government. :thumbsu:
I don't think you know what socialism is, not to mention this isn't the thread to talk about who to vote for

Geez your quick is there an alert on my posts? Will take the Politics out.

A) football

B) football

(Why can’t we just talk about football here? I get enough of politicians and their selfish ways already. I’m not looking for more in a football forum. Thanks.)

Socialism is an economic system where the means of production, such as money and other forms of capital, are owned by the state or public. Under a socialist system, everyone works for wealth that is in turn distributed to everyone. ... The government decides how wealth is distributed among the people. Sounds AFL to me.

I have deleted it lets talk footy apologies to everyone.

Later everyone. I’ll see you again around round 18 when Tommie comes back.

What is it with this place and the constant need to talk politics, bag christians, call everyone a racist, take political cheap shots? Don’t you people have more to do with your lives?

Wouldn’t mind Jeff raising other issues with our fixture.
Has anyone checked out the last three rounds of the year?
It’s GWS in Canberra, gc in gold coast,
Eagles in Perth. If that’s not rigging I don’t know what is.
