Hasn't that been the status quo since Jeff came in?
I would love it if presidential bluster and comeuppance to AFL leadership could be shown to have some benefit to the club, but i don't see it.
For many years, starting in the 70's, we talked behind closed doors to gain access to change that was club alteringly beneficial. And where it didn't work out - eg Princes Park - we managed to gain a new path by convincing those in charge to get behind our intiative.

I long for those times.
A verbal spanking laid out to the 'The Man' has such fleeting emotional sustenance, currying support to get what we really want fills the belly for much longer.

The games changed, not just on the field either. We currently have the weakest AFL CEO the league has ever had that cannot make a decision. Its why everyone is consulted on every topic. Hence you have power plays and bargaining going on all the time and we tend not to lick balls.

Do you ever recall in the 70s that you speak of whether we were the highest paying taxpayer to consolidated league funds, as we have been for a very long time now? And how do we get treated for that?

Sorry, but as a member of many years I am sick of the AFL taking from the funds that I and every other member contribute directly to our club to support it, and then get the AFL to take it away and then treat us with contempt.

The media has never been an ally so we have no option but to voice our displeasure publicly. This is also how AFL House operates through its chosen media darlings.

I agree with you Flinch, and I wish Jeff hadn't said anything in public (even if I am really pissed at the AFL about our fixture).

Never complain, never explain. Never talk about other clubs. Never discuss internal disputes, Don't individualise. Avoid media, unless defending our own. Humble in victory, gracious in defeat. Be known by our actions. Follow the Kennedy and Jeans legacy etc.

Jeff's spot on about out Sunday fixture,we certainly get the rough end of the pineapple and all the Junior footy are played on Sunday's that also has a impact on crowd attendances.

AFL's love child Collingwood only get two Sunday games.

My family couldn't do Mother's Day until after lunch due to the junior sports we had to attend on Sunday morning. A bit hard to tell the wife I was off to the MCG by myself to watch footy.

Unfortunately, Jeff is fighting an uphill battle. Channel 7 and Fox paid in excess of a billion dollars to the AFL for the TV rights and if Channel 7 wants the football to run straight into the 6 o'clock news, then by gum, the AFL will ensure that happens.

Still, it's great to see that at least one club president isn't going to back down on this.

No debate about the legit reasons behind Kennet's serve.

The question is one of culture and efficacy.

I don't think Kennett's public pressure campaign is the Hawthorn way, and not a culture i support. Certainly that culture will die, unless we have a string of egotistic, bombastic and potentially wayward personalities as president in the future (not calling Kennett those things).

On efficacy, if we haven't gotten the results behind closed doors then we failed. It doesn't automatically mean that avenue is flawed.

But i can't support the view that Kennett has lost patience after extended efforts behind closed doors. Kennett is outspoken on issues not impacting Hawthorn, and attacking the AFL. I think the first choice strategy is for him to waive a big stick in public and be feared. It has always been his way.

The best plans are carried out in stealth... like the way Graham Wright conducts our drafting and trading.

I think the 3:20 time is great - makes more sense (than 2:10) to the competition overall as it's worth a lot more to Ch.7 leading into the news

The issue is that we have too many of those matches this year, they need to be better shared around

Fridays & Saturdays get bigger crowds than Sundays and what most people miss is that the corporate functions are significantly better attended on Fridays and Saturdays.

What's the alternative? Sit back and keep copping the reaming from the AFL? That's just embarrassing and I rather a Pres who calls it out and hope that something changes....rather than play "good boy" and just pray for more

This! We tried the softly softly approach - it didn’t work.

Collingwood continually get favourable draws and their President is the mouthiest campaigner out there. Happy with the bombastic approach - call it out and let it be known that we won’t quietly accept the s**t we get handed by an organisation we handsomely pay taxes to.

Our fixture when initially handed down had us having our first home game at Marvel against the Dogs.
Behind closed doors we argued that we were the only club who didn't have a home game at our home ground in the first two rounds.

I wonder if we had as many Sunday 3:20 slots to start the year in that version of the fixture.

We did do our complaining behind closed doors. When the fixture was announced our CEO expressed his disappointment with the fixture, and since then we've been pretty quiet on it. Until the media started in on us this week regarding our Mother's Day crowd.

Our crowds have been poor, no question, we also copped a lot of Sunday games to start the season and our numbers were slowly declining. We get a Saturday game and boom over 40k, but then we dish up that game against Melbourne leading into Mother's day and suddenly it's all about how we never show up.

Jeff's come out after that basically saying don't blame the supporters, blame the fixture.

I wonder if he would have said anything if the media had just focused on the game

Socialism is an economic system where the means of production, such as money and other forms of capital, are owned by the state or public.
