Admirable quotes from McLardy, but does he realise that he doesn't have a say in this? Growing divide between members and a board who think they've got a God given right to rule because Jim Stynes picked them as his men.

Announcing that John Trotter will be conducting our board review is another sign of this.

Wish i could edit lol , really only wanted to hear what he had to say to Kennett :p

I like that Syl fella , says it straight up , plus he likes T.I.S.M , give him a gig :D . In all seriousness though , Jeff Kennett is an egotistical muppet who is nothing more than a downsizer and a seller. The very first minute he were president at your club he'd be downsizing all operations and making the coach accountable
for all and sundry whilst single handedly thinking of a way to sell you guys of to somewhere like West Broken Hill , just for the shits and giggles.

Kennett would know this conjecture (if it got legs) would scuttle any chance of us getting Clarkson.

I couldn't see him working well with any current board members or many new prospective (MFC supporting) board members. We can't afford to lose our identity at the highest level and he is compromised by past comments towards our club.

He's running amok.

A president that has no emotional connection with the club, can anyone think of a president that doesn't support the club they preside over?

Richmond did with Clinton Casey who is an Essendon man, that worked out fantastic...

Looks like things are starting to move.

NEW Melbourne board member Geoff Freeman has met with AFL boss Andrew Demetriou as the club embarks on a total makeover.
Freeman spent an hour with Demetriou at AFL headquarters last week and is firming as the man to replace Don McLardy as Demons president.

A number of potential new directors are also being lobbied by the board. Former Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett is not among them.

Some more news today on the Jeff front. he today revealed to the herald sun that he is in face a melbourne member and has been for some months now. and to reiterate what he has been saying he is very keen to take over melbourne as president.

also might i say in my opinion what mclardy said about why there was a good reason victorian's kicked Jeff out of ofice in 1999 was a fair bit harsh, now a very respectable rebuttal might i add.

McLardy's comments were, in my opinion, an utter disgrace. You're taking a shot at the wrong man. You do not represent all of Melbourne, you were never elected, and you can't say that the club doesn't want Kennett. The only reason that people are wasting their time talking about this is because Don isn't doing the job well enough.

Meanwhile, Alan Stockdale is now a candidate - apparently. That's be good; he's a Demon isn't he?

That's reassuring :thumbsu:

Exactly. It seems increasingly like he's just out to screw around with us. And aside from the likelihood of severe ructions between him and either current or new incoming board members if this scenario actually transpired, there's also the obvious probability of large numbers of club members being alienated otherwise as a result.

It'd be a disastrous outcome, especially given our current on-field situation, and the fact we've already lost a few members this year because of that. We certainly can't afford to cruel our membership base even further.

I thought it was entirely fair. And it's a point certainly backed up by the preponderance of evidence about the Kennett government.

Clearly Don was speaking for a substantial number of us also, going by the audience response there after he said it. I almost gave him a standing ovation myself, even though I was alone in front of the computer at the time.

Increasingly to you perhaps, I haven't seen anything that has made it look like he's only trying to screw us over more every day.

Depends what moves he hypothetically makes as President, should he get it, until it becomes time to sign up again.

Reality is that while Don might believe it, and you might believe it, it doesn't mean it's true, or appropriate from our President.

What Don needs to do is call for a vote

Let Democracy do its thing

while Don might believe it, and you might believe it, it doesn't mean it's true

Of course. It's the evidence built up from the totality of Kennett govt actions and statements over those years which makes it true.

At least you spared us the graphs this time.

He closed schools etc. etc. Politicans don't do things for shits and giggles, I'm not going to bother getting into a political argument, but I'm sure there's a reason that the past government found it necessary.

While I don't want to get into an ideological debate, Kennett lost power for reasons other than expressed above and maybe relevant to us. He lost the vote of country people, important to conservative power, who believed that the Shire and Council amalgamations had destroyed their community. Bracks won many country and rural seats in 1999 and even more in 2002. There is a pretty good argument to say that Kennett is a crisis manager but not a consensus builder. It depends on what we want out of the footy club, but I would warn people to be careful what they wish for...

Excellent post, selling off everything will make you money and nobody is better at it than Jeff.

Jeff should leave Melbourne alone.

Sure Jeff has a high community profile and did a solid job at Hawthorn but benefited greatly from Ian Dicker, Hawthorn also maintained a core group of strong leaders like Jason and Dermie.

Surely Melbourne needs a leader that is passionate about the club and can use that passion to generate excitement internally and externally.

Sure bring in a few talented people like Peter Jackson but the leader needs to be someone that belongs to the club.

Would Essendon accept John Elliott or would Carlton accept Eddie to become their club president.

Good point about Dunstall. He was instrumental in getting Clarkson.

Did the Hawthorn footy club improve under his watch?

Yes, but largely on the back of Ian Dicker from what I know about it. Any hawks lurker can add to this cos they would know better than me. Not sure they would exist if he had the role 15 years earlier.

Does he want to be president? or is he happy to sit on the board? I don't mind him sitting on the board and coming up with ideas, but wouldn't be giving him too much power.

Not warm enough for you now? lol
haha fair call, but since Don has stepped down I think we will see Kennet present his case within the next week or so as to why he should be president....This will be interesting
