Rumour Jeremy Finlayson under investigation - 3 game suspension

People unironically attempting to compare this to the Taylor Walker incident

Taylor Walker did not turn himself after his comments and it actually required other ears within the club to report it to staff and eventually turn it over to the AFLs hands. Jeremy Finlayson alerted the club about it as early as 3QT and apologized to the player after the game, with a self written statement put up on the website in a much quicker turnaround post-incident. I would've preferred a more upfront form of apology from Jez but it still beats Tex's absolutely shocking staged video.

Back in the good ol’ days Fin would run his mouth off and get carried off the field on a stretcher.

Footy is SOFT.
Funny thing is, back in those days us younguns swore like troopers on the the field, but never off it as there’d always be an older person around to give you a good clip behind the ear, or foot up the arse.
Nowadays you can’t dare throw a few choice words around on a field in the midst of intense physical combat, but off the field it’s completely normal and is some cases acceptable, for youth to use foul language in public, towards their peers or parents.
The world has gone mad.

Player can and do still swear like sailors on a football field.

Just don't use homophobic or racist language and you're fine. It's really easy.

Weird game to out yourself as a homophobe.
Not like it was much of a contest or anythibg, Dons were getting thrashed. Bit of classic “look over there, scoreboard!!” woulda done the trick.

Hoops:

Even if it is used towards a straight person, do you think others around the scene are deaf?? There are spectators, other players and umpires who may be gay and have also heard the unacceptable language. Leads to a tense 'it could be me next time' scenario in the heads of others. Not good enough!!

That a lot of people in this thread don't see the issue with throwing out slurs denigrating a minority group makes me realise how far as a society we have to go. It doesn't matter that it was said to a straight guy. If I called a white person the n word would that make me using it ok or lessen the potency of that word? As a society we have to stop using language that vilifies a group of people. And for people saying "sticks and stones", language and words can be an extremely powerful and damaging weapon of dehumanising a person. Speaking from experience it can wear a person down emotionally and mentally being subject to slurs on a regular basis. Take the recent events with Eddie Betts and his family. Nothing physically was done to them but the people who chose to drive by yelling out racist obscenities obviously got to them and affected them in a deep way. There is just no need for it.

Everyone who is offended needs to watch the southpark episode "the f word"

I've grown up in the lbgt community, my brother was one of the community outreach leaders during the 90s aids fear.
I grew up being taken to drag shows, grew up around all kinds of different lbgt people.
The slanderous terms that comes from their own mouths would shock people.

Should the term have been used - no. Is context important in it, absolutely

Guaranteed the least offended people out there are going to be actual gay people.

From my experience, the average gay person is mentally tougher and more resilient than the average straight. I’m sure 99% will just roll their eyes and not give it another thought.

I’m more interested in people’s need to go into battle for gays because a footballer happened to say a bad word. To me, this says more about your own homophobia. Like, how weak and pathetic do you really think gays are that they need you, big brave hetero, to protect them from hearing nasty words?

You are absolutely correct that context is important. Gay people call each other homophobic words as a kind of satire and disempowers the use of that language when others use it in a derogatory way. It's similar to how black people may call each other the n word. That doesn't make it acceptable for others to call them that. This is a useful reading regarding this.

The higher rate of suicide in LGBT community means this is all crap.

I'm not about people being offended, it's hearing that word used as a pejorative and the message that sends.

I take his point though.

Junior footy is super strict on swearing, or at least my local is, whilst if you walk past the change rooms it's swearing everywhere bellowing out.

To me it should be the other way around.
