Howe's injuries highlight just how dependent we are on him and Darcy Moore, too.

Murphy's been gone for two years and we haven't prioritised recruitment of an A-grade (or event B-grade) replacement, which may now prove very costly. The idea that Reef McInnes, who had failed as a midfielder and failed as a forward, would magically be the answer was a pipe-dream. I'm a fan of both Schultz and Houston but gee, we needed a top-tier key defender more than either of them.

Look at the Hawks by comparison. They identified a similar deficiency and went out and recruited Battle and Barras. Bang, bang, problem solved.

Our pursuit of Silvagni shows that our list managers have now woken up but it's at least one season too late.

No Silvagni.

Reef, Frampton and Moore -- plus whoever we have in the VFL will be fine. We need an A-Grade key forward more.

He will miss at least three according to "reports." But let's face it, he needs 6.
May as well not bother employing medical staff then. After they clear him fit to play we can just say “nah, he probably needs double that amount of time because reasons”.

I'm afraid the only option is to take him out back and shoot him

Yeah but what happens if Moore gets injured? Or Frampton? Or both?

We can always manufacture ways to score goals. But we desperately need another key defender.

We have McInnes and Dean on the list this year. Assume we’ll add Silvagni at the expense of Dean for 2026. We’ve also got Cochran developing in what looks like a 3rd tall role, and Smit learning the KPD role. Just how many tall defenders do we need?

How many KPD can a club have? You could ask the same question of any team if they lost their two starting defenders

To play devil’s advocate …-

… sure, KPD’s don’t grow on trees. But in the MSD we picked up …

… a KPF when we already have Mihocek, Membrey, McStay, West and Johnson - did we really need another one mid season? …

… and a winger when we already have a bunch of players who could play that role?

Well we’d already lost Johnson for most of the season. West was having issues with his feet. Membrey is too short to use/classify as a genuine KPF. McStay and Checkers have shown themselves to be more fragile than you’d like.

Steele is a winger, but he’s also played on-ball and forward or back. Very much a utility. He was also in the “play now” category which made him attractive. I’d also query whether the others we might use there when we selected Steele (Lipinski, Jaicos, Allan, Cochran, Hayes) offer more in the position (for the young guys) or are better utilised elsewhere.
