Based off a lip read, Howe saying he's groin went "pop"

2. Ability to Walk: This is a positive sign but does not rule out a serious injury. Walking uses a limited range of motion and muscle activation compared to sprinting, kicking, or changing direction. It suggests the injury is likely a Grade I or Grade II strain, but a mild Grade III is still possible.

· Grade I (Mild): A minor overstretching with micro-tears in the muscle fibres.
· Likelihood in this case: Possible, but the "pop" sensation makes it less likely.
· Outcome: Painful but heals relatively quickly. Could be a few days to 2-3 weeks out.
· Grade II (Moderate): A partial tear of the muscle fibres.
· Likelihood in this case: This is the most probable outcome. A "pop" is very common with a moderate tear. There will be clear pain, weakness, and loss of function. Bruising may appear in the coming days.
· Outcome: Significant time out is required. Typically 3 to 6 weeks of rehabilitation, depending on the severity.
· Grade III (Severe): A complete rupture or tear of the muscle.
· Likelihood in this case: Less likely due to his ability to walk, but not impossible. Walking can sometimes still be possible with a severe tear, especially if it's high in the muscle belly or tendon.
· Outcome: This would be a long-term injury, potentially requiring 8-12 weeks or even surgery in rare cases if the tendon is avulsed (pulled off the bone).

Most Likely Overall Outcome

Based on the information, the most probable scenario is a Grade II (moderate) adductor strain.

Yeah, I think subbing them out early is more effective because sitting out a week here and there then trying for 100% the next week is not good for old bodies.

He looked okay walking, so I'm hoping it's 2 weeks rest, which means back first week of the finals. But then he'd be cold and rusty.... so off the bench role I suppose.


Howe's defensive IQ is too valuable to sit him out. Just means Fly need a ready defender to start.

He looked in good spirits too.

Yeah, would want a defender as sub I reckon just for insurance. Just don’t play two of Long or Mitchell in the team. Even one as a sub is horrible

There is no replacement for Howe. If there were any and they were available to the club in the MSD, they would not have hesitated.

The backline will look different in '26; that much we can agree on. I hope we recruit well and that TJ and Reef both develop as expected.
 
Even if it is a 2 weeker, I would not play him again. He is just an injury waiting to happen unfortunately.

It depends on the severity of the strain, but even after 4 weeks of rest/rehab, it's a risk.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained; plus Howe has earned it.

If he trains well, you play him and cross your fingers his old body holds up.

At his age and with him reinjuring it, a month is an extremely tight time frame to get back.

Could you play him as a sub in a prelim?

Is that the lesson? He & Sullivan (a contact injury) are the only older players who aren’t fit when it matters. Howe is no stranger to injuries and plays a high-risk style.
