We've been blessed with some champion defenders, but none more enjoyable to watch than this guy.

And hands down the best interceptor in my time watching footy.

Just looking up that rd1 2015 game and the week after we played Carlton at Subi and JK kicked 6 goals in the 3rd qtr for a total of 10.

I remember the 10 but not him kicking 6 in 1 qtr 😳

LEGENDS EVERYWHERE I TELLS YA!!!
Man i still never forgave my mates for that day. Jk inly had kicked a couple before half time and they wanted dinner in subi so we left the game at half time and came hack just before 3qt and missed Jk going crazy

I cant remember too many defenders where the opposition team would have to change tactics because of a defender. McGov was the man. Opposition teams would work out gameplans to avoid kicking it long if Gov was in the area. I dont remember that happening with any other defender.
Also don't recall too many other defenders being tagged.

If he doesn't stay on at the Eagles in some capacity, hopefully he goes on to expose the flaws in Trump's golden dome project.

One of the very best to ever do it and arguably the Goat CHB.

Interception city and although he could be prone to the odd grubber kick across goal he more often than not ignited a scoring opportunity from the last lines of defence.

Culturally a perfect fit for a rebuilding side. Skilled vocal and a natural leader. Horrid timing, sense Harley is pissed he couldn't play more footy with him. Two similar characters, old school footballers.

Robbed of another 50/60 games I suspect. His body seemed to be holding up relatively well and with good management could have cracked the 250.

Enjoy retirement Gov, the life of a fat fisherman telling mayo laden tales beckons. Your place in the Eagles Pantheon is secure.

Why didn't they wait until full time to eat like a normal person? Or eat at the ground?

You have weird mates.

Too early to call the last few drafts but Mcgovern ends our last really great draft haul.
Gaff 280 games, 2AA’s and a Worsfold medalist
Darling 298 games, +500 clubs goals, 4 time leading goal scorer, premiership player and All Australian
Lycett Premiership player
Mcgovern 197 games, 5 time All Australian, worsfold medalist and premiership player

We really need the last few draft hauls to come on as close to the above as possible

Not all neutrals are echoing that. I have McGovern right up alongside Scarlett and Rance equally, but not better. Far too hard to split them.

Outstanding career by Gov 👏
McGovern is a Champion Data dream.

The stats analysts at Champion show McGovern averaged three intercept marks a game for 10 straight seasons. No other player has done it for more than five straight seasons, with Giant Sam Taylor hitting that mark. McGovern's career average of 3.3 intercept marks a game is the most on record.

He has taken five or more intercept marks in 53 games, which is an all time record (no other player has done it more than 40 times) and since he debuted in 2014, McGovern marked 18 per cent of the one-on-one contests he defended, which ranked him at No.1.

He is the only player to record 100 score involvements and 90 intercept marks in a season in 2017, and in the Eagles' finals series that year took 15 intercept marks, which is one short of the finals record despite only playing two games.

Amazingly, McGovern has each of the top five highest rated seasons for a key defender on Champion Data's 100x rating system, and six of the top 10. Harris Andrews has three in there and Alex Rance the other.

McGovern was good enough that the national media noticed how good he was even though he played his career in WA.

If he'd been at a big Melbourne club, he'd be the defender's GOAT in their eyes.

Still Doesn’t feel real.
One of the most under appreciated players of the AFL era. The fact he gets compared to Rance makes me sick. He revolutionised CHB position and won us a flag with his trademark intercept and attacking kicking.
Would have another 3-4 AA if it wasn’t for injury.
Long live the king.

Can't split Gov and Rance though /Richmond ****wits

I feel like in Modern footy all superstars/future hall of famers all push way past into 200 games and close to 300 games. Gov achieved so much in so much less. Rance i think was similar too and Cyril perhaps but I find Cyril to be vastly overrated
