The most courageous player of his era, the most naturally skilled and an all-time great defender.

This man embodies everything that we would expect a West Coast Eagle should. An example to the youngens, a marvel on the field.

What more can I say but thank you, Gov. The end of a great era.

It's beyond belief that Gov wasn't really recognised for his courage and never won any such awards.
But we don't need them to remember his incredible bravery and selflessness.

Massive respect for this guy. He transformed the game with his intercept marking. He played through pain thresholds and injury way beyond what could be expected. Without him we wouldn’t have won the flag in 2018.

He can be immensely proud of his career and the way he conducted himself. He leaves the game with the admiration and respect of the entire competition.

He was one of the 2018 team who never dialled it in post-flag years. He remained s selfless player who put his club above him and his own health.

Gov is an all-time legend of our club. His reliably plucking marks out of the sky across our backline will live long in the memory and of course his part setting off the chain of marks and kicks that led to our winning goal in the 2018 GF that he medically probably shouldn't have played in. It's a very sad day and it has me wondering if we are particularly cursed by having so many top players having to leave the game not on their own terms. And, for those of us in the east, we don't get a chance to wave farewell during a lap of honour at the ground, so - in the unlikely chance Gov reads this stuff on BigFooty - farewell, thanks for all the memories, and best wishes for all of your post-footy life.

A sad end to what was a really good career. But Jeremy's health and safety must always comes first. 197 games, a club Best & Fairest, 5-time All Australian and 2018 Premiership - so many achievements. One of the best defenders of the modern era. If there was ever state of origin played in the Rance and McGovern era....those two on the same team in the backline for WA would be a nightmare for any opposition coach.

Well done Gov, great career.
Especially with Franklin and Kennedy at the other end. And nic nat in the middle. Scary team

Jesus, just saw this article and now the tears are flowing again...
“I will forever be indebted to West Coast and I will always bleed blue and gold.”

I feel I'm about to break down

To lose barass and McGovern in a space of six months is utter bullshit

Jeremy thank you so much for everything especially 2018. You are a legend in my eyes for life.
We have, basically, lost our entire spine over the past 9 months.......Oscar, Snake, Yeo, Gov and Barrass. This of course will go unnoticed by commentators/scribes of the game who prefer to comment on how brave Essendon are with their injury list.

Just saw the news, not unexpected but still gutted for the big fella and the team.
Just like one of my x's that's a hole that can't be filled.
How many times did the bloke put his body on the line for the team!
Will always be SO happy he was at WC and they gave him the opportunity to show us all how good he was, also that we got him and not his brother.
Good luck with the next chapter mate 👍

I remember watching him as a dead average 18 yo playing Claremont Reserves whilst he was on the list, became a running gag with my mates that he was a "superstar" and a "future all australian" (satire)

then he actually did it

Even on bye weeks our suffering continues.

Legend of the game. Nothing better than watching the opponents bomb it in knowing Gov was going to gobble it up. Sad end to a great career.
