The media were predicting a massive fall from grace for the Blues after that game, forgetting that pre-season/practice games weren't taken very seriously by the club in those days. In fact you would be more concerned if we won games in the pre-season back then.
The experts were tipping us to go down by a ton against Collingwood in Round 1,
we had only picked up Phil Maylin, Collingwood were doing their usual April Premiers routine, and from the first bounce when WoW Jones kinda sorta karate kicked Peter Moore, you knew we had been foxing. Johnston went berserk and kicked 7, and i recall at one stage we were 15 goals up.
Back page of the Sunday Press read "It's a Grand old Game" with a picture of Johnston taking a hanger. Still got that in a scrapbook at home somewhere.
Actually if you watch the movie "The Club", most of the footage used is from that Round One game.
