Jesse Hogan(mini-draft)- priority for us

He was out that season with a busted knee. I suppose you could argue it counts though

Aah ok. I suppose they were still a reasonable side during the 90s despite only playing finals once. That Ninthmond joke had to come from somewhere.

I haven't seen a club as bad as Melbourne for such a long stretch since the early-to-mid 1990s. The Swans, Fitzroy & the Bears were all appalling then. But I guess if Michael Voss and Paul Kelly can emerge from loser teams, then so can some Melbourne players.

What a ridiculous amount of pressure and expectation they are placing on a kid who hasn't even kicked a footy in anger yet.

Money isn't everything, and I would hope that his parents, (his manager won't say shit of course), can see through this charade and advise him to get the hell out of there after his current contract expires. Or even sooner if there is a suitable escape clause in his current agreement.

I don't care where he goes, but to publicly lace up a kid like this is simply wrong.

Melbourne heap way too much external pressure and expectation on their draftees every year and then wonder why they crumble. I hold no delusions of grandeur at the idea of Freo somehow poaching him, but watching the club nail another kid on the 'great white hope' cross frustrates me greatly, especially a WA kid of such immense talent.

All that Hogan needs to decide is "Do I want to be at Melbourne?".

I would think whatever they offer him he could get from another club. If his answer is "No" then he asks them to trade him, nominates a club, and lets them know that if a deal is not done he is happy to go PSD to whatever club will match his price because he does not want to be a Demon.

It may not end up with him here, but it would get him out of Hell. And it would put a lot of pressure on to get a deal done.

But it is likely Hogan, 18, will wait until after the club completes a restructure of its football department to make a decision on his future.
Hogan, who must play out this season in the VFL, is already tied to Melbourne until the end of 2015.
sounds like he's not totally sold on the dees at the moment. i thought he was contracted to the end of 2014, although could have gotten that confused with his eligibility to play.

My view is that in our sport where freedom of movement is restricted still quite heavily and loyalty is still emphasized as a desirable quality that the difference between moving and not moving comes down to just 2 things: a) If you really really want to, (see Judd). b) There is a significant difference between the value the current club places on a player and the prospective clubs valuation. A player might not leave for an extra 50 grand but 90% will for an extra 300. Since most clubs place a similar valuation on players most players don't move. Since there is no way for us to place a greater valuation on Hogan than Melbourne he won't move unless he really really hates it. And afterall, can we really say that Melbourne won't be playing at least competitive footy in 18 months time just before he is due to resign.
Certainly that was a neat trick Freo pulled; whenever Pavs contract came up for renewal we managed to be not $hit that season. The ol' bait a switch.
I agree whiteoak that the Dees are putting undue pressure on the kid but half a million a year at the age of 20 must be some form of compensation.

Not sure about the last par, but that bold bit is the key isn't it? We can see from the outside that Melbourne are a joke, have burnt more talent than you can throw a stick at and have managed to acquire said player (among others) by instilling a culture of losing at their club. But in the end of the day, inside the machinations of a club, with like minded people, being told the narrative of how they will build a great club based on 3000 years of history blah blah blah. He will almost certainly buy in, be pressured to if he doesn't, and sign. He might not be thrilled with where he's at, but he'd have to be absolutely miserable and clearly want out (like Buckley did when at the Bears in the 90's) for us or anybody else to have a chance, and there's nothing indicating that's the case at this stage.

Should be known he's living with Jack Viney and Jimmy Toumpas and hopefully not stewing on how shit we are.

As you know all too well, the wheel can turn quickly from 'joke of a club' to 'respected Premiership contender'. Only took you guys 3 years, so there is hope for us and Hogan.

**** off Melbourne.
Jack, get the hell out of there before you get Watts'D.

Who is Jack, and why should the Dees **** off? He's our player. ;)

Enough from me, adios. I'll be cheering you on this season in the finals.

Not when you are hanging your hat on an untried kid and publicly declaring him as the saviour of the club.

There really are no depths as to which your disgraceful club will not stoop.

Crazy shit. They made 2 20 year olds their captains and seemed to have ruined them so they now put the entire future of the club on the shoulders of someone who hasn't even played.

They would be better off picking the best and fairest player from every state league in the draft this year and get some dog hungry into their side.

3 or 4 never say die players that just want the footy and the big stage.

Or bite the bullet and just fold/merge them.

It has to happen sooner or later.

Doesnt matter how crap they are going or if it looks like they may never improve.
Players become great friends with one another.
It becomes hard to leave.
Dont want to leave your mates and go somewhere you dont know anyone.
Unless your not getting games or feel you are worth alot more money.
Not many like change(just ask Reg)

Just look at Hannath he quickly became good friends with the Melb guys and was upset about having to leave, he had no choice though but im sure he made new friends here and is prob glad is out of there now.
If he had the option though, he prob would of stayed there.

Classy lot on here :thumbsu:

What can you expect???

You have infringed on the basic principle of sport i.e to play your best fairly and honestly, you have consciously cheated and gamed the system to gain a unfair advantage.

No. We are a rational lot, who don't see the need for heritage to rule over common sense.

The competition rationalisation WILL come sooner or later. And, right now, your mob is squarely in the sights.

And deservedly so.

Your behaviour, arrogance and ineptitude at all levels is a total disgrace to the entire competition.

If you don't like reading it, then piss off somewhere else. You're not needed here.

It's always easy to cast stones when it's not your club in the firing line. I love Melbourne, and I respect that everybody else loves their club, and would never want to see them lose it for some egotastic reason. Obviously that view isn't shared by a select few here, so that's a shame.

its our board. where we talk amongst ourselves. Good on you for sticking up for your mob, can't be easy.

Jimmy knew.

It's okay, you're safe here.

Fair point, and thanks. I'd imagine most of you share my sentiments.

Anyway, good luck for the rest of the year. Would be good to see you win your first Premiership!
