Autopsy Jesse Hogan - Worth 220 Points

If we aspire to be better than 12th on the ladder, we clearly are not doing fine and still need to find many more avenues of improvement if we actually want to win a flag. Hogan and his potential to improve our forwardline was one of them.

Obviously the club felt that the negatives with Hogan far out weighed the positives.

DOCKERS ACCOUNTABLE FOR HOGAN PRICE

Fremantle football manager Peter Bell says the Dockers "take accountability" for the price they paid to have Jesse Hogan on their list for two disappointing seasons.

Hogan apologised to fans earlier this week for his time at the club not panning out as he'd hoped, kicking 18 goals in 19 games and struggling with on- and off-field issues.

He joined GWS in exchange for pick No.54 on Wednesday, two years after the Dockers traded picks No.6 and No.23 as part of a deal to secure him.

Bell acknowledged the Dockers had paid a significant price for Hogan's two seasons.

"It’s a very obvious statement to say it cost us a lot, it hasn’t turned out so as a football club we take accountability for that and we have to move on," Bell told Sportsday.

"What it does allow us to do, it frees up quite a bit of TPP space given that Jesse’s walked away from his contract and it potentially allows us to do some other things as well."

I think this is a case of addition by subtraction. I wonder how much the loss of revenue due to covid had to do with this? I suspect we wouldn’t have let him go so cheaply if our coffers were full. We will never know. We needed the cap space and Jessie wanted out. Not much room for negotiations there unfortunately.

Just maybe the key phrase in that is "Jesse's walked away from his contract". I think that suggests Freo would've held onto Hogan. Hogan on the other hand perhaps wasn't feeling the necessary support from the club and maybe felt it was too much baggage being back in Perth already. But the scenario of him wanting to get out would compromise him as a secure option for another club and they'd want to mitigate their risks. GWS would be fully aware of the potential he could bring, so it's an ideal situation for them. Get him for a ridiculously low price, incentivise the contract to cover their bums and hopefully plug and play.

I dont.

FWIW i was in the sauna with him and Brayshaw and they both used the same drink bottle.

Hes highly paid and respected. He is living the dream.

This pandemic and the way it has affected Victoria while having little impact in Perth will hopefully help us retain players. The freedom they have this off season will hopefully encourage them to embrace WA.

I think it’s more than there was an agreement that all ties would be cut if Jesse ‘walked’. He could hang around at Freo, spend time at Peel, earn $650k for one year - then career over, or go to GWS and earn $900K for two years before career over. I’d take the two years. I would hazard a very uneducated guess that if they all agreed it was best if he left, they’d called it quits, and everyone starts again.

Duffield wrote an article saying Hogan only got 1 year deal with trigger for 2 and 3 at GWS.

😲
I thought it was 2 years with a trigger for a third.

Sounds like he was kicked in the arse to help him through a door he’d just opened to leave.

The outcome makes more sense if Hogan was the instigator for wanting out of the club, which considering we wouldn't let him crack into a side with a dysfunctional forward line, maybe it was the right call from his perspective and sensed he was on the outer.

He sounds like the kind of guy that would prefer to work for $150k p.a. the than $100k with $250k of bonuses.

From what we could observe on the track he was 100% committed and worked hard, but his place in the side did not seem to be particularly valued or secure, and maybe his future with us going forward was not well communicated. For someone with mental health issues, you want clarity and consistency, not playing mind games with the admin guessing where you fit in the scheme of things.

I mean, is he wrong, assuming this to be the case? From reading this thread he doesn't seem particularly valued even by our own supporters.

The dude is a dead set meat head. If he never had the ability to play footy his ceiling would be something like a bricklayer.

I know ole Silent Alarm can be a knob but he's kinda been vindicated a bit here.

I've seen people say this sole deal is going to set the club back a few years and that it's f’ed things up, what exactly did Hogan do to make a difference to the team anyway? I love the bloke and wanted him in the team, but its not like we were doing poorly without him, we'll be fine.
My thoughts exactly. This 2020 not 2008.

Jesse Hogan is the only player we gave literally thrown the farm to get in the last 15 years.

This isn't the 2000-2008 period where we threw the farm to get the likes of Peter Bell in 2000, des headland in 2002, Josh Carr in 2004 and Chris Tarrant in 2006. By the end of 2008, Freo only had 6-7 guys aged 23 or under.

Will the Jesse Hogan trade set us back? Only to a degree but not 4-6 years back as we have been rebuilding since the 2016 draft. In the 2016-19 drafts we have recruited a lot of kids. But most importantly have not had 1 did kid in each of our 1st rounders.

The Jesse Hogan trade won't define us. We will be fine

Jeezus H , what is he some sort of idiot that didn’t understand a big trade and big money means big pressure and thought he could just bumble around like the 38th player on the list who’s already got 1 foot out the door

The players , the coaches AND the supporters didn’t value his piss poor contribution

That’s why he’s gone

And there would be significantly less pressure and media attention on him at GWS which also probably factored into the equation. I'm going to be honest, putting myself in Hogan's shoes and what I imagine his circumstances were which wasn't a healthy situation I'd want out too.

If being on a team where he would have less pressure on him was important, why did his management approach Richmond? If he wanted to disappear I don’t think Richmond would be a good idea.

Maybe it’s because he could sit behind Riewalt and Lynch and be a third tall? If this is the case, then clearly he’s not ready to be our KF and it was best to let him walk. Tabs may be a bit of nimrod at times, but he’s got some piss and vinegar in him too, which I like. He also plays with confidence (sometimes too much. Lol) and that’s with season after season of being injured. I would imagine the Granberner will be brimming with confidence next season after an AA selection. I think we’ll be fine replacing Hogans 19 goals over 18 game production.

Plus we can now sign mundy and Schulz with the cap space.

Our drafting and trading has been solid the last two years with Belly and Co in charge. IMO Hogan was from the last regime which made it easier for Bell to let him go. As supporters, we lump these of these decisions into the club as a whole, but in reality we have a completely different CEO, list manager, and head coach from when Hogan was traded in. Until Bell and Justin make a trade mistake of this magnitude, I am going to back them in.

You can’t blame them for trying to make a wrong a right.
