From what I remember, it was his poise and kicking skills that impressed me when he was in the team. Seemed to have a fair bit of time, and was pretty reliable at hitting a target, even if it wasn't a massive belt down the field. However he never seemed to get enough of the ball to show this off often enough. Hopefully he comes back from injury and is able to rack up more of the ball, because I think that was the biggest gap in his game.

No doubt he has class and a good goal sense, but personally I don't think that's enough on it's own. Like you said, he needs to rack up more possessions or develop a hard nosed defensive edge to his game. IMO.

The other thing I would say he needs to do is get a lot stronger. His skills are above average but not elite, and players of his body size tend not to play in the good teams unless they have a huge hurt factor. Not that he's timid in the way he plays, be if he can develop a bit of a physical presence it would enable him to have a lot more influence.

I've said before but he reminds me a bit of Caracella. Blake averaged 14 and 15 touches a game for us. But he played that forward of the contest flanker role reasonably well because, when he got the footy, he found space and made right choices. I reckon we don't have that in our side right now. We've got guys like Green, Bewick and Zorko who play a game which is big on energy and not so much on polish.

The question then becomes can we afford to have this type of player in our side? Is this type of player "icing" when we need to still bake the cake? Certainly, his skill set fills a need but I tend to agree that he needs more to his game that the "silky finisher" stuff. Dunno if he'll ever have real defensive intensity but becoming a 18-20 touch a game half forward is not beyond him.

I'm really fascinated how 2013 will pan out for him.

Maybe Mayes will be closest to filling that role, up forward at least. Still feel we haven't seen the best of Jesse but if we don't see it this year then not likely to I suspect. Really hope he gets a chance to prove himself because I reckon he can play.

Needs career best form to get another contract. He has shown he is capable of being a handy player, but needs to add another dimension to his game to become a good player.

Did I also read somewhere that he was injured again? I feel like he has been more or less injured for the last two years.

Find it hard to see him breaking into the team any time soon, pending any injuries. Where do people feel his best position is?

I always thought O'Brien was not too different to ex-Lion Rischitelli. Would be rapt if he turned out like him.

Even when he is at his best Jesse isn't good enough to break into the senior side. When he returns from injury he needs to buckle down and work hard to at least show he is worth another year.

Jesse was a fairly common selection when he was fit, so I think it isn't quite fair to say he isn't good enough at his best. He certainly is a bit behind the 8 ball though.

Agreed. Was fairly impressed with what I recall. Hopefully he can string some games together.
