So why he didn't he do well in the Rising Star? If there were no flaws in his game would he not have done better?

What Zebra said. But also, he didn't even play the whole year. You will be blown away next year when you actually watch the Roos play for once. Then you will see what we are talking about.

If he loved the club so much, why the repeated filirtations with others.

Let's face it, Grant is a mercenary dog.

Albeit a very cheap one. Judd got millions, Grant got 20c.

Some people don't deserve opinions. That was the only time he ever had a "flirtation" with another club.It would have made him the captain of a new team and the highest paid player in the AFL. Instead he stayed with a team who had just finished 15th.

Chris Grant is every bit as passionate and loyal towards the Dogs as Glenn Archer is towards the Roos.

I'd say Grant is passionate and loyal, but AS passionate and loyal as Glenn Archer? That is going WAY too far. Don't exaggerate.

For all these people comparing Joel Selwood and Jesse Smith - you have got to be joking. One was the clear cut winner of the Rising Star in his first season, the other is a twenty one year old who wasn't even close.

Jesse Smith had a great year, don't get me wrong and will be a good player but Selwood is in another league all together. Selwood captained Australia and was a gun midfielder in the U18S - he slipped from fighting it out for the number one selection to dropping to Geelong at seven because he had a knee reconstruction last year - teams were scared of the risk. Selwood had a very distinguished junior career but there was just some injury concerns. This Selwood is only any good because of Geelong's midfield would be valid if he didn't have such a good junior career (i.e. captaining Australia over Marc Murphy and Bryce Gibbs etc) but he is a fantastic player in his own right.

Selwood has achieved so much more at senior and junior level than Smith has and is a better footballer now. When Selwood is as old as Smith lets compare him to where Smith is now and the first year players from that year and make a comparison that is being made.

Its a completely unfair comparison but in every aspect Selwood is and will be the better player. The only way Smith will ever get near him if (touchwood) Selwood has a reoccurence of his knee injury.

stop raving about how good smith was against hawthorn (a young up and comming team) and see how well he went against geelong. was caught holding the ball a couple of times and looked like a rabbit caught in the spotlight on numnerous occasions.
long long way to go before he matches it with the big boys

There are plenty of stars that didn't win the rising star.

I look a bit deeper than things like a media driven award where guys like Adrian Anderson and Andrew Demetriou get a vote.

Height, speed, courage, skill, composure, footbal brain, toughness, defensive and offensive side, leadership - there is not obvious, exploitable weakness in his game at this point.

Humourous thread. You tried hard Zebra but you still have no credibility round here. I'd use the Gold Coast taunt but, seeing as I don't want to see you guys end up there, I'll restrain myself.

He's good, but you make him out to seem like a 14 time brownlow medallist. Nice try.

Just cos he didn't win Bulldog of the Century or cos he didn't feature in the paper every day for the last year doesn't mean he isn't as passionate about his club as Arch is. Im not trying to criticise Archer, he was a freak, but Grants loyalty towards the Dogs was unblemised as was Archers towards North. You only have to listen to his B and F speech to see what the club means to him

Grant was a Bulldog through and through and would do anything for them.

Arch also got offers from other clubs early on - probably thought about them too - the point is neither of them did anything about it and they stayed loyal to the clubs they love.

Hard to imagine many that would have given better service than Chris Grant did to the Bulldogs.

He is a champion.

Smith was an All Australian U18, played in the Australian carnival premiership side, played in the TAC Cup winning side and won the F&*cking Larke medal, you idiot!

And FFS!, no putting the boots into Chris Grant.

The bloke was a champion in EVERY aspect of the game.:thumbsu:

i had to revisit the final against the hawks just this week, having missed most of it from going to the bar when at the game and my anger and disappointment only just subsiding. smith played a blinder, he is quick for his height.

with another preseason under his belt and hopefully staying injury free we may see him improve again. like most north players he is underrated and probably the best young talent on their list. once his body develops a bit more and he gains some strength, he may go into the midfield and start getting the recognition he deserves.

Despite missing a game in the national carnival due to injury. Was dux of the U18 class that year by a mile.

And we got him with pick 42:D Finally - we get a F/S steal. Good enough to go top 1-3 in that draft.
