Jesse White

Me? I want him to stay at the club. On our brilliant run at the tail end of last year, three names come to mind: Jesse White, Trent Dennis-Lane, and Kieran Jack. All three stood up. White was forcing crumbs for TDL to take hold of, dishing off assists, and kicking a few himself, did everything right. Don't understand people who see him as crap.

Then again, I didn't think he was too bad against Carlton and he was dropped after that so meh.

Well said.

I want him in the team now but it's hard to manufacture with so many talls in the side already and most of them playing well and deserving of a spot. If he keeps kicking bags in the 2's he'll force his way back in as it sounds like Horse is a fan of his.

The guy is crumbing goals in the reserves, and people are not happy with that!? As long as he kicks goals, he can do it any way he pleases. I think however we all can agree we would like to see more leadup mark/goals and some pack work.

The problem with this is that at AFL level we aren't looking to him to kick crumbing goals.

Our current gameplan is all about quick ball movement forward, trying to keep our forward line open and beat the press by long kicking. A big forward who can take a grab, makes that gameplan work a million times better. A big forward who crumbs the ball and doesn't take contested marks, makes it harder.

We need White to start taking grabs, to lead out from the goalsquare over and over and over, and start clunking marks, he does that and he'd be back in the team quicker than you can say "Goodes to the midfeild"

Honestly what kind of crap is that, our forward line is never open, it is always congested, because we take a mark in the centre square and wait until everyone has run back before bombing it in long. We NEVER play on from the mark, and always give the opposition the opportunity to man up on us.

The same as with TDL, I don't care how he is kicking them, the fact that he IS kicking them is all that matters. If he drops the mark and then gathers it to crumb a goal, I couldn't give a ****.

Watching the Richmond game, I remember once play in particular. Alex Johnson coming out of the back half (through LHB I think it was) with heaps of players in front of him up the wing and LHF. He looked at the mass of players and then looked further/deeper into the forward line where there was actually a one on one contest (Seaby vs Browne), put it long and quick to Seaby's advantage and he took the mark 30m out.

I recall this as that is exactly what J2J was talking about BUT it stood out to me because it happens so rarely in our games for a long kick from the midfield/wing etc. into an non-congested forward line to a one on one marking contest with space around them. It just doesn't seem to happen much at all.

Not denying it doesn't happen - it happens for every team - and happened a couple of times against the Lions, but you can hardly call it our gameplan and use it as a defence for why White needs to take marks and not crumb goals in a pack situation. I mean, the only time I can think of where this supposed 'game plan' was played to fruition was against the Lions, and that's hardly reliable if you can only manage it against basement teams. Sure it might provide positive signs for the next few years when we master it, but this year is the focus.

I was agreeing with you, using the case of Johnson-Seaby to show how surprised I was to see a quick, long and direct kick into a well-spaced forward line to a one on one contest. It doesn't happen enough. I'm sure if a guy like Bradshaw was attracting the ball at FF it would happen more, but it just doesn't seem to be part of the way we play.

Sorry yeah I was agreeing with you too, I was just using you as a launchboard for a further whinge. :p

It was interesting listening to Bradshaw's press conference, when he was talking about potential forward options who can fill his position, he mentioned Reid stepping up. Then he mentioned Jesse White, he paused, then continued with "he's still here".

Not sure whether we can read too much into it but it appeared that either White's progress hasn't impress Bradshaw and he had nothing positive to say about him other than "he's still here", or there's other things going on off the field, perhaps offers from GWS or QLD based teams? Whatever the case, Bradshaw didn't appear too positive about our prospects.

It appears contradictory to what Horse has said about White, but I'm quite concerned. Looks like White may be given another extended run at some point and if he doesn't show something he may be on the trade table.

What part of my post didn't you understand?

I don't care how he kicks them, as long as he kicks them and seizes the opportunity. I also said I would like to see him take more lead up marks.

The problem is he isn't in the side, and our gameplan rarely attempts and sucessfully comes off with pin point passes into the 50. So IF he was in the side opportunist goals are what he may be seeing more of than lace out passes onto his chest.

The problem with White and his crumbing goals is, so far, that is the ONLY way he has kicked goals. He's not good enough at it to win a regular spot at AFL level, he's not exactly going to get any better at it, and it doesn't improve our structure.

If White was taking a few contested marks and really providing a target, and SUPPLEMENTING that work with his crumbing goals, then that would be great. He'd be like 08-model Franklin (but maybe not quite so good ;)). But he's not.

White is fast, athletic, he's a great kick, he has great hands below his knees, all as a 196cm, 105 kg monster. He has plenty to offer at AFL level. The problem is that he has shown very little to offer as an AFL-level full forward. He's had some handy games, but aside from that Carlton game that we all (myself included) got chubbies over, his handy games have been very non-FFish; few contested marks, few marks inside 50, few set shots, but lots of clever opportunist goals.

I'm sure DG and co think I've got something against White; I don't. I'd love to see him succeed, and I'd love even more for that success to come with us (obviously). As I said, I think he's got something to offer. I just don't think he has what it takes to be a power FF.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a crumbing forward forthwith. In fact a forward fullstop, who can kick straight and mop up the mess that is our forward entry fritter!

I think both the Lions And GC would be interested as well as GWS.

Heard rumours saints also talking to him. But regardless still have the next few rounds to get him to pull right and if not we'll see what happens.

On a side note TDL kicked 9 in ressies

His marking needs to improve drastically. However, his second efforts are what we need up there. He keeps going and going. If it was up to me, I'd leave him in the side. I really liked our forward line structure tonight. Collingwood have a fantastic defence but I liked having Reid and White, as well as McGlynn, Bolton and McVeigh.

I prefer him in the team, as s4e said, his second efforts and ability to follow up the ground ball are impressive. Plus he is accurate in front of goal which is important. White/Reid as the duo are my preferred choice, combine the two and you have the perfect forward, so in a way the complement each other well.

I watched him closely tonight, he did offer many leads but seemed to be neglected by his teammates - either they don't trust him or they don't think his leading is that flash. He is still the best tall crumber in the league and perhaps we should set him up as a third tall. Unfortunately we don't have many other players to take the dominant forward target spot and so it looks like we'll just have to persevere with him there; at least he will draw the attention of one of the opposition's best defenders.
