Everyone raves about Reid with good reason but he had only 2 more touches than White.
Leave him in for a few games and if he is still no good , trade him !

Don't make me laugh. Reid was double teamed all day. White had a chance to really crunch a pack near the boundary line and backed off. Very disappointing.

Longmire also has no clue in helping out Reid. Did nothing to help Reid with the double team. Was very disappointed with Horse as a coach.

Trade him. I think you'll find his worth has been gauged in previous seasons and found lacking. This season and yesterday would diminish it further.

Only had 2 more touches! It was obvious from the Brisbane game last year the difference between the two players. The gap has only widen. It is that obvious you have to ask what is going on the real Swans brains trust?

The Swans are not in a healthy state. I hope they dont make the finals, because it would be a waste of time. 2013 is approx 35 games away. 35 games that need to be given to young players. Maybe we will discover the next Johnson? Maybe not. but Kennelly, Shaw, ROK etc will be of no worth by than. Swans need to rebuild and not be tied to getting into the finals to maintain fickle Sydney crowds. 24,000. They cannot make money on that.

If we couldn't get a trade for Bevan then White won't attract much interest. He's really not worth a pinch of s@#$.

I think he could be developed into a very good defender. It would pretty much eliminate the 2 deficiencies in his game... Reading the play and marking.

Unfortunately we're fully stocked up on defenders but hopefully another team might see some potential there.

Good defenders read the game really well. Whites problem is he doesn't have an appetite for the contest.

Yes, but it's nowhere near as important for a defender as it is for a forward.

And I think a bit too much is made of White's apparent lack of an appetite for the contest. From what I've seen his main problem is getting to the contest in the first place. At least in defense he'd have someone showing him how to get there.

Let's not forget that Grundy's problems as a forward weren't that dissimilar to White's.

Was pretty insipid yesterday. Usual stuff - just no aggression in his game.

Also has a really bad habit of pulling out of leads halfway through. Needs to stop that.

:thumbsu:

I have to agree with J Moore, Whites performance on Sunday was insipid, and IMO, most of his games are. The Swans are usually recognised for their toughness despite sometimes lacking some skill, and with players past and present like Lockett, Kelly, Maxfield, Kirk, Bolton x 2, to see a player of White's stature putting in such insipid performances like that is hard to accept. Perhaps it is because of his stature, his size, mobility, his athleticism that it stands out more, but I personally dont want him on the field again until he can learn to use his size and weight to our advantage.

We don't need anymore tall defenders.

He just gets pushed around and edged under and away from the contest far too earily for someone who stands at 196cms and at 108kgs. He ought to be able to hold his position better and hold off defenders more easily and effectively at that size. And in fact I remember numerous times last year and in 2009 when he looked great in which he held off strong defenders to take marks. Remember a few marks he took on Matty Scarlett at Homebush once which were very impressive.

He also doesn't seem to take those marks on the lead above his head anymore. That seemed to be his go to option as he showed his hands could be vice-like at times. Just hasn't been there this year. Of course he hasn't played all year inside 50 but it just isn't looking like he has made any progression.

Grundy could always mark though.

White would be a pretty one dimensional defender unless he learns how to take a grab. You don't want him dropping chest marks in defence like he does up forward.

I think his best chance is GWS.

I think Jesse is lost at the moment in the forward line. He is essentially playing a role of the fourth forward behind Reid, Goodes, and LRT. His confidence is shot to pieces as well because he is in and out of the side, doesn't seem to have a role, and is the fan favourite to abuse when things not going well (not saying that its not deserved, we all need to vent).

I wouldn't mind giving him a job defensively for a few weeks as a CHB to at least try and give the guy a role and find some confidence. This could then give Grundy an opportunity to play as a Scarlett type floating role, and we could move Kennelly out of the back line where his turnovers don't cost us goals. Given the way we are playing at the moment, I think we have nothing to lose by giving it a crack. While I'm at it, put Goodes in the midfield and leave him there.

I dont know if this is allowable, I will soon find out, but I just posted a reply on the Sydney Swans v Fremantle thread, but as it is about Jesse White, perhaps it deserves to be here.

I would like to see some change in our structure.

Disagree with the first half of your post, partly agree with the second half. To say White hasnt had a role, is incorrect. His role when playing forward is to take the occassional grab, contested or uncontested and kick a goal. Occasionally, if he cant take the mark, to hopefully tap the ball to a position where one of our crumbers can get it and kick a goal. His role when he doesnt have the ball is to chase and tackle, and when we have the ball he is to make a lead so he can then hopefully mark the ball when it is kicked to him. His role when playing in the ruck is to ruck, again mark the ball when it comes near. This isnt rocket science! The role of every player on the ground is to play well wherever you are played, to do your bit for the sake of the team

The second half of your post, the part I partly agree with is reasonable, except I would at least let him play a few games in the reserves down back, to hopefully get a feel for it. To expect him to move to the back line in the seniors and do well when he looks so lost in the forward line would be foolish. But yes, I am in favour of him being tried down back, but let him show some aptitude for it in the ressies first. No other (developing) player on our list expects to get a game week in week out when he isnt performing and White has had many more chances than every one of them.

But other players get called up to the seniors and can do well. To say "His confidence is shot to pieces as well because he is in and out of the side", well tbh, thats what happens. It didnt seem to bother Parker being bought into the side for a game, he played well and now hopefully will get more. Thats whats expected. For any player, (other than a proven performer like Goodes, ROK, Bolton, Kennedy, who can have an off game) to expect to get a game when they have put in a lame effort and done very little to deserve it is highly optimistic and unreasonable. They have to take a chance when they get it, and Jesse has had many chances, many more than most when you consider his performances.

He has spent time playing defense in the 2nd's. No idea how effective he was though.

The more I think about it, the more I'm warming to the idea of seeing how he'd go as a CHB. At first I thought people were just wanting to throw him down there because they just really wanted him to hold his place in the team no matter where it was.

But someone pointed out that it would free Grundy up to be a Scarlett-style player (obviously they are in different classes). But it's a good point and it also implies another point which is that our defence struggles with genuine big forwards.

Jesse could match them for size and speed (probably not endurance though) and one of his major downfalls would become irrelevant instantly. That being his inability to read the play and lead to the right spots.

Maybe Jesse will shock us all and be a brilliant backmen but considering there is barely even a spot for Lewie in the backline these days who would you drop? Sounds like you're saying move Grundy onto a smaller player taking over for Kennelly. But Grundy is not like CBolts, he really stuggles on smaller players. They are way to nimble for him and the result is he ends up looking like an idiot.

White has 'key defender' written all over him.

Will do a Leo Barry / LRT if shown faith by Longmire.

Grundy is an epic failure in key matches against the best forwards. Lacks pace and confidence. Give White a go as CHB and move Grundy into the forward line to support Reid.

While I'm not opposed to the idea of giving White a chance in the backline, first he needs to establish himself in that position in the seconds. But one thing I am sure of, he will not be another Leo Barry. White for a start cant take a pack mark, so the memory of Leo Barry taking that saving pack mark in the backline of the 2005 grand final will always be a memory, and for White it would just be a dream.

Anyone remember Leo Barry as a forward?

He couldn't mark for shit.
