Record: 11W 11L
Home: 7W 5L
Away: 4W 6L

Away record isn't bad, like it has been for the last 3 years. Away games aren't the problem. But 7 of 12 at home??? Not good enough.

Best wins:

Round 6 v Melbourne
Round 7 v Collingwood (112 pts)
Round 10 v Geelong
Round 21 v St Kilda

Worst losses: (that cost us the finals in the end)

Round 4 v Richmond
Round 8 v Essendon
Round 9 v Hawthorn
Round 11 v Brisbane
Round 13 v Kangaroos
Round 20 v Eagles (the manner in which they capitulated)

These are games a top 8 team should win, or at least be competitive in.

Close games: (2W 3L)

Round 2 v St Kilda (1 pt loss)
Round 3 v Eagles (8 pt loss)
Round 10 v Geelong (7 pt win)
Round 14 v Adelaide (6 pt loss)
Round 21 v St Kilda (5 pt win)

2 out of 5 in close games is OK. We choked against St Kilda but got one back on them. Thus you can't blame these close losses for missing the finals. You win some and lose some of these.

Positives:

Pavlich (61 goals)
Mundy (great first year)
Parker
Sandilands
Crowley
Peake
Dodd

there are others of course, but these spring to mind. 4 essentially first year players were in the 22 on Sat night.

Negatives:

Woods
Polak
Headland
Medhurst

which leads me to 'tradebait'. Woods isn't worth much, but Polak would be courted by Carlton or someone. Headland, I have had it with him. How many free kicks did he give away last night???

Verdict:

Average season. Mediocre start to season. Close losses costly in terms of momentum early on. Terrible middle of season. Couldn't win at home. The low point for me came against the Kangaroos, when I think there were 100 pts kicked for the whole game, of which 30 or so at the city end (where I was sitting). Wondered why I bothered going. Much improved end of season, caused by getting injured players back, and also playing mediocre opposition. Shown up against the top teams. Can't match the intensity. Smashed in the midfield regularly. Defence not as good this year as it has been. It will be better with Haddrill back. Forward line much better, but Farmer and Medhurst down. Farmer probably has had an OK season, but Medhurst...I am a fan of him, not a Medhurst bagger, but he has had a poor season. We did play a lot of young players, and I think the myth of Freo's amazing list must be over now. Next year, finals, or CC to cop it in the neck.

Thoughts??

Average club, losing culture. Get used to failure cos thats all Freo has to look forward too. Freo continue to be the joke of the AFL!

What killed our seas on is the fact that we clearly didn't come to play in several games this year. Against Richmond, Essendon, Hawthorn, Brisbane, Kangaroos and west coast the players looked like they couldn't be bothered from the outset which is unacceptable from professional athletes. Every team has their bad day but six embarassing performances from 22 games is disgraceful.

To make the finals next year is setting the bar too low. We finished 7th in 2003 and should have improved on that the last 2 seasons. Top 6 will be good but for Connolly to get supporters back on side we will have to play in a pre-lim and be competitive in it. He's traded heavily for the present and needs a dominant season in '06.

Agreed Dom. Jetau - very good and fair review. I would argue the toss about the final grade though. For me, it wasn't average - but certainly a fail (D minus at best).

Unfortunately we have developed a losing culture, and an acceptence of mediocrity.
