After watching Carlton yesterday I was wondering whether Jetta could be a small forward. He has pace to burn and I think he would be able to kick goals on the run or snap.I'm not too sure on his defensive pressure though.
I don't think he does enough playing on the wing.We have alot of good midfielders this year and I feel we could use them in Jetta's spot while Lewis has a go up forward.Just a thought, something we could try in McGlynns absence in particular.

I think it'll be a while before Jetta is small forward material - i don't think he has the hard body required for laying tackles in the F50, and doesn't yet chase down his opponents down hard enough, given his pace.

Jetta would be a complete waste in a forward pocket. His straight line pace and his exquisite long field kicking are bringing us huge benefits on the wing. Why lose that?

The Postman's performing the EXACT role Roos has asked of him, ie, to find space on the wing, use his pace and excellent foot skills to deliver quality ball into the midfield and forward 50. He's had a few chances to kick goals and I'm sure it's only a matter of time before he slots a few in a game. He looks SO dangerous out on the wing...

Is anyone seriously satisfied with Jetta's performances? Hasn't kicked a single goal in 9 weeks, which is just nowhere near good enough as an attacking player. He is averaging under 2 tackles a game and under 14 disposals, which is nowhere near good enough for a midfielder. Considering the extremely limited defensive side to his game, and where he was taken in the draft, what are your thoughts on his output?

Our use of 1st round draft selections has been absolutely pathetic, so I'm a bit skeptical. Since 2003 they have landed us:

Josh Willoughby
Darren Jolly (ie Lewis Jetta)
Ted Richards
Daniel O'Keefe
Patrick Veszpremi
Lewis Johnston
Gary Rohan

2 delisted without playing a single game, 2 in the reserves even with a vastly undermanned senior team, 1 injury-plagued KPP prospect, and an impressive Ranga who its too early to make a full judgment on.

Didn't we get Richards for a 2nd rounder?

As for the rest of your question:

Disposal has let him down a little in the past couple of weeks and his defensive game could use some work but if he can gradually improve on what he's already done then I think we used the pick reasonably well.

Players with the combination of pace/skill that Jetta possesses are pretty rare. I'm glad we have him.

I concur with MF, plus Jetta is playing wing, not midfield. The guy weighs 40kgs and Roos has been using him as a link man. When we were winning he was contributing a lot more, but when we're chasing the ball, playing behind the man (like we have for 3 weeks) we just aren't getting enough ball to deliver to him, for him to deliver to the forward line. I know he hasn't kicked any goals, but I don't think that's an issue yet. His pace and delivery is just as important IMO...

As for Richards, bloody hell, I hope we didn't give up a first rounder for him!:(

Sorry but yes we did get Richards for our 1st round pick in '05, the draft is a special subject of mine :(. We also threw in pick 50 who the Dons used to select Sam Lonergan (48 matches). I can understand the argument of Jetta not having peaked, and I certainly won't be throwing him out the window just yet, but I don't think he is doing enough to justify a 10th straight week in the side.

The draft pick for Richards were #19 & #50. #19 was the last pick of the first round and was bumped up by three priority picks.

In a normal year with no such picks it would have been a 2nd round selection.
Not that it really matters...

As for Jetta, for a first year player he is doing well. Needs to have more influence over games however he is a pure receiver. When are not playing well, it is hard to say Jetta is not playing well as those that feed him the ball have been average.

Tough on him. He will grow as a player and turn into a real game breaker for us.

Early on we had some bad luck/made some poor decisions. Willoughy was obviously a blunder, as was DOK.

Richards has been good value over the years, almost got us to a second flag in 06, and has played some fantastic footy at times. Even though he's at the fringes now, he has been good value. Worth the gamble of the draft picks. When you consider the players including and just after (as there is no guarantee we would have gone for Dempsey) pick 19, there is :

Dempsey (39 games, yet to prove he can make it),

Paul Bower (47 games, playing some good football right now but again yet to prove he'll make it),

Danny Stanley (5 games, delisted),

Beau Muston (10 games, injury plagued, ultimately unlikely to make it),

Ryan Cook (14 games, who?),

Cleve Hughes (16 games, delisted),

Wayde Mills (16 games, delisted).

Ted Richards, on the other hand, has played 90 games for us. We needed a ready-made player, and we got one who has given us great, great service. Some people put too much value on draft picks. We definitely did well in that trade. Not brilliantly, but well. It was win-win for both clubs. I'd take him over every player in that list except maybe Dempsey and Bower, but even then it's a maybe.

As for the other blokes, Vespa is on a special diet and special training regimen. Who knows what the coaches need him to do before he gets a game. But he has talent, enough to make it at senior level and have a great impact. Sometimes players take time and work to get prepared.

LJ had a freak foot problem that has been repaired. There's no reason to think it will hamper him long term. He has also showed a great amount of ability. No need to panic about him.

Gary Rohan obviously can't be judged yet. Why you'd even bring him into it is beyond me.

The same goes for Lewis Jetta. Also, he might only be getting 14 touches a game, but 10 of them are kicks, which is actually more than Hannebery. He's also getting 3 inside 50s a game and he's having a shot on goal a game. Yes, he's missed, but he'll start kicking them eventually. He also gives us great drive and leg speed. We're a better team with him playing.

I like him on a wing when he's up but it might be an idea to rest him in the pocket at odd times, for 2 reasons

i) Adds a bit of x-factor in the forward line
ii) Most importantly, it gives him the best chance to break his duck. Somehow I feel that once he gets his first couple of goals the confidence will come by the bucketful.

Just a thought

When I first glanced at your post I thought, WTF? However, I concede there may be some merit in Jetta playing forward, for the simple reason that his electric speed would make him very, very hard to stop as a leading forward, but I ferar he may be just too slight to play in the 50?? Also, from what I've seen of him this year and on Youtube in WA he hasn't played that role very much at all. I love him on the wing, especially when we're getting decent ball fron our ruck set-ups and halfback line.

As I said, just a thought, and admittedly with even less thought than usual. Just trying to think how Roos might mix things up a bit and give Jetta a chance to show his best.

As for your first reaction (thinking WTF ? when you glanced at my post), that's just habit DB ;)

I'd had a few beers, so "WTF" though not being an accurate representation of my sentiments (In hindsight, "Mmmm, interesting" may have been more accurate), was easier to type. The more I drink, the lazier my typing gets!:)

Plus many are conveniantly forgetting Teddy was one of the players most responsible for turning the 2006 GF around in our favour and almost getting us over the line. Was outstanding in that game. He has given us wonderful service and doesn't deserve all this hate.

Exactly. Teddy is a reasonably good defender and he is best when he is playing as the loose man in defence as he doesn't have a problem dropping in the hole (see what he did against Brendan Fevola last year).

Hi Bez!

I like the kid. I know we are lacking depth at the moment but I think that he needs a run in to twos for a few weeks where he will totally dominate, then he will be brought back with a belief that he belongs in the seniors.

It's almost as though he is holding back a little in order to not make mistakes. From what I have seen, he hardly makes any errors so we need more of the play to go through him. Especially whilst entering the forward 50.

I say swap him with MOD for a few weeks. Then bring him back against the Pies!!

Just finished the slow trawl through the game (the cold unemotional assessment)

I thought Jetta showed some nice touches. His disposal let him down but then Goodes, Shaw and ROK had the same problem.

I'm 50:50 on this. I think MOD has really earned a place. I also agree that Jetta needs to develop, but really, you could say the same about any number of young players. I'd advocate whatever works best for team structure this week. If MOD covers the loss of Tiger better then good. A run in the 2s will do nothing to harm Jetta. I think people here are sometimes too ready to project their own fears or disappointments onto players. They're pros. They got here by fighting the odds not bemoaning them.

With our injuries it's good to see a bit of pressure on spots still exists. Last year you got a run if you had more than one leg.

g'day Ted, all fair points I guess but I still think he should keep his spot, the space on the MCG will suit him...:thumbsu:
