Jiangwan Stadium (Shanghai)

It was built in 1934 as part of the Greater Shanghai Plan. It has hosted the National Games of China on three occasions: in 1935, 1948, and 1983. On October 17, 2010, the stadium hosted the first ever AFL match in China between the Melbourne Demons and the Brisbane Lions.[1]

Well...I mean it doesn't look any worse than Subiaco Oval...

Surely some Chinese money will go into doing it up a little.

What's the capacity? Doesn't look like more then 10,000

We got 8,000 from memory when Demons and Lions played there in 2010. 15,000 capacity seems about right

Oh well as long as it's not my team that has to back-up the next week after such a long flight

Got a point there. Fortunately the AFL gave us both the bye after this game :thumbsu:

The stadium will likely get a bit of a renovation so it should look better once that's done up. Honestly think this game could be a sellout between dedicated Aussie fans and interested Chinese locals. Looking forward to the difference in atmosphere.

looks like it would fit two soccer fields side by side across the narrow axis, given the way the ends are squared off with buildings. It must be bloody huge.

you could probably use most of the width , just if you're sitting long way your going to be a fair way back .. my thought would be use one end of the stadium as is then possibly temporary stands at the other end so you actually sit behind the goal

I can't find the link at the moment but I remember reading that the field is 330m long, which looks about right when looking at that photo with the running track.

It will be interesting to see if they use the extra space at either end for anything (e.g. temporary seating, pavilions, game day village).

That's a huge stadium, I wonder why it was built like that. Its got to be terrible fore viewing any sport - seeing anything at the far end would almost require a small telescope.

I wouldn't be surprised if the AFL's quoted smaller capacity is due to planning to make the playing surface towards one side. Then have temporary seats along the other side and around the ends.

It will be interesting to see how they end up aligning the oval. Will they stay with what they used for the 2010 NAB Cup game held there and stick temporary stands at each end, or will they shift it further north as to maximise the amount of existing seating used?

If that is a full size 400m track in the 2nd pic you posted, then I'd believe 25K. Very long stadium by the look of it.

It is 330 metres by 175 metres fence to fence. It was built in the same bowl style as the LA Coliseum for the 1932 Olympics and 1936 Berlin Olympic Stadium, just a shit load longer. It was built in 1934 opened in 1935 and was the largest stadium in east Asia at the time, so it probably borrowed heavily from the 2 other stadium designs. It's now part of a sports centre. 25k for the full 330m but 15k for its AFL configuration. I put these pictures up on the Port board in June.

Couple of players visited in June when the club held its business lunch in Hong Kong and then went and checked out 2 or 3 stadiums

This is a picture from the first ever match at the Jiang Wan Stadium which was the first ever AFL standard game in China in October 2010.

Went to Shanghai in the 90's with a 7's team to play in the Shanghai 7's. The event was staged at this ground. The Poms had just left Hong Kong and the Chinese Govt was trying to challenge the long standing Hong Kong 7's, also with the Red Army moving their football code from soccer to rugby the govt wanted a show case. From what I can remember the facilities were pretty ordinary. It was primary an athletics facility. Crowd #'s were small except for the final when rent a crowd arrived.

Adelaide and the Gold Coast Suns are on track despite photographs showing there is much work to do.

Photographs supplied by an AFL supporter in Shanghai show that while the surface is improving, officials will still need to prove it is up to AFL standard.

There is no seating in the stands but these will be built closer to the round eight match.

"We are on track for the game in China," AFL spokesman Patrick Keane said.

"All the temporary stands and seating at the ends of the ground and the marquees won't go in until three to four weeks before the game, as per the event-build schedule. All the work so far has been around the playing surface, which is not the full grassed area but the central area. Our staff are very happy with the turf so far."
