Both cut us up in grand finals.Bartel more versatile and I'd say better in the wet but I'm going for Black overall. His disposal was first class by hand or foot. Deadly left boot.

I’ll pick Bartel but not because I think he’s better but if you remove the Moondog he’s my favourite Cat ever

Although as a human being I have very little respect for Bartel (his thoughts on gambling to making ads about them)
He makes me wanna vomit but still prefer him in my side than Black

They're not out on the field for their personalities

Black probably. Both great players and I always will love Jimmy, but realistically he is just a better Heeney. Black is arguably the best midfielder in a side that was full of amazing midfielders.

Black. Silky smooth and all class. Similar to Hird in that he had a lot of time and could work in very heavy traffic

Bartel is very good overhead, and a good impact player, but Black was steadier over a longer period of time
At the end of his career, I thought Bartel looked disinterested, and the game had passed him by

Bartel was seemingly more versatile, but Black played his role to perfection and therefore no need to move him around. Bartel played in a stronger team for longer as well. Black was also less prone to giving away 50s

It's all opinion though. As a Geelong supporter, Bartel had that smirk on his face that wasn't endearing. We also had other players like Enright, Corey, Ablett, Byrnes etc. who came across as far more humble people without tickets, and still played a role - even if Bynes wasn't a superstar

Black was a standout at Brisbane, where Bartel was more part of the furniture.

I know nothing about Simon Black's personal life
His wife flies under the radar, as does he - which I respect

Actually, I wouldn't even know if he has a wife. That's how little I know

And that's a beautiful thing

I remember standing next to Simon Black in a queue at a corporate do at the 2007 GF. I couldn't believe how slight a build he had, which no doubt was why he glided across the footy field. I thought to myself that if I didn't know it was Simon Black I would not have picked him as an AFL footballer.

Then again, there was a guy who played for North in the 1970's who nobody could possibly have picked as a VFL footballer - Mick Nolan. The playing weight of the 194cm ruckman was 135kgs. Nolan sadly passed away in 2008 at age 58

FYI, Max Gawn at 208cm weighs 111kgs

Black was a better footballer, but i'm sure he was the inspiration for how Cripps disposes of the ball these days.
Black was an expert of just dropping the ball when he was tackled and never getting pinged for it, just as Cripps does now.

Simon black. His accolades are better and although I didn’t see him live I’ve heard many people say he was the best or second best player of that lions team behind Voss. I’ll take their word for it. I don’t think Bartel is at that level.

bruh

Is the fab 4 including lappin because he was a fair way behind the other 3 in my opinion.
If Lappin was the least of the fab four it only serves to underline how exceptional the other three were, because Lappin was an absolute gun in his own right:

  • 279 games
  • 3 time premiership player
  • 4 time All Australian (in each of Brisban'e grand final years)
  • Best and fairest in 2004
  • AFL hall of fame member

On the original topic, I rate Black ahead of Bartel. And similarly to the above, that in no way is meant to reflect poorly on Bartel, who I rated as one of Geelong's very best in their premiership years. I just thought that when Brisbane were winning flags Voss was the best player in the comp, with Black not far behind him, and a level again above Bartel.

Agreed great player but the other 3 are a shelf above in my opinion, Voss one of the best ever the perfect leader, black the cleanest rolls Royce and Akermanis as talented as there has ever been in goal kicking midfielders.

Yep, I think the Fab 4 go

Voss
Black
Aker (only because he was less consistent & fell away)
Lappin

Black was amazing due to his skills and endurance even though he wasn't the Bull Voss was. He was the youngest too which shows how good he was winning a Brownlow when he was only 23 and being such an important cog in the team before his prime years.

Bartel won the Brownlow in his 6th season, Black was his 5th so I give Black the chocolates.

Yep. An exceptional team across the board, really.
