While this article only mentions Jimmy Carr as part of a larger peanut gallery the last paragraph speaks loudly as to why Conservative standup is in a bit of a pickle;

...The African-American stand-up Chris Rock maintained that stand-up comedy should always be punching upwards. It’s a heroic little struggle. You can’t be a right-wing clown without some character caveat, some vulnerability, some obvious flaw. You’re on the right. You’ve already won. You have no tragedy. You’re punching down. You can be a right-wing comedy columnist, away from the public eye, a disembodied, authoritarian presence that doesn’t need to show doubt. Who could be on a stage, crowing about their victory and ridiculing those less fortunate than them without any sense of irony, shame or self-knowledge? That’s not a stand-up comedian. That’s just a c*nt.

Jimmy Carr himself couldn't function within the new-ish conservative comedy movement coming out of the U.S that's known as 'dry bar comedy'

Jimmy Carr:
  • Tax dodger.
  • Supporter of the Saudi regime.
  • Genuine trans-phobe.
Not sure if those are his favourite things in order, but he is all of them.

I find this whole thing to be a bit tedious.

Tax dodging is done by every single Fortune 500 company, but we all own shares in them through our super. Most of us bank with them.

We just gave $1bn to the USA who are committing genocide in Palestine and have our closest cultural links, but then complain about Saudi human rights record when some comedians go there (and we all use Saudi petrol in our cars every day). Saying comedians can't do shows in Saudi because of their human rights while Australia's largest trading partner is China and our biggest military partner is the USA is just astoundingly misguided.

I'm not sure he's a genuine transphobe. Part of his appeal is that he "offends" everyone. He even asks during most shows if there's anyone he hasn't "offended" or made a joke about yet.

Who pays money to see uptight nerds like this?

Can imagine putting up with someone like this at one of those 10 bucks and free drink comedy nights in Newtown, but if people are probably paying at least $100 of their hard earned for a bloke who clearly got bashed at school and now is doing revenge tours... Seriously.

If I wanted to see nerds saying offensive shit I'd just go to a young Liberals event.

Lol at him talking about bravery. Bet he didn't make any jokes about the off-limits topics in Riyadh
Something about his swearing is so cringe too. Sounds like an uptight arseh*le pretending to be normal

Nice bait Chief

Nick Offerman Smile GIF

The Left has announced it. It is real.
I don't recall authorising this at the last meeting

Are we sure it's not a false flag?

What choice do we have?

Hypocritical maybe

This is a bit like people doing shows for Donald Trump though, rather than just doing a show in Saudi

Yes part of his appeal is how frequently "everyone" involves him punching down

He called Graham Linehan brave for his stance on trans people

And at least he paid up his taxes, returned to television and let every one of his mates tear into him over it :tearsofjoy: Watching Sean Lock have a go at him every opportunity he could was worth losing a few public services that his taxes would have paid for.

Lock was good value, and missed

When he started talking about the 'bravery' of bigotry, I was waiting for the punchline.

Wow. Wasn't a joke.

Watch this pls. Let it go, but basically calls out the old people and Christians that love Carr.

Do you find that video funny?

The laugh tracks say otherwise. I found it boring tbh.

Some people like to laugh at themselves and don't want to be interrupted by the morality police. Cancel away, I say.
And some people like to laugh at others, belittle them, act superior and don’t want to be interrupted by people calling out their bullshit.

James Acaster is a legend.
