Think Melksham has been average of late and probably could use a run in the twos for a few weeks to find some form, makes way for some consistent VFL performers to come. I'd like to see Browne get a chance, Kav should get the chance to experience seniors footy if he's fitness is ready and can string together some good games in the VFL, but definitely think Licka is ready to come back, perhaps we'll see after today's game but we could certainly use his run. Baguley last night got to see just how tough AFL footy can be in a struggling side, could use a spell in the VFL, for me though I'd say Dell'Olio keeps his spot over Colyer right now, was better than Davey who's form has taken a step back from earlier this season, Hird should swing the axe but we don't need a massive change, maybe 3-4 changes this week tops depending on some VFL players performances today!

Ins and outs (and those staying) with some logical explanations:

Staying:
Dyson - was reasonable and was at least getting to contests unlike others.

Hooker - was an ordinary match but happy to give him another week as his spoiling over the season has been reasonable.

Davey - quiet but was at least near the ball unlike others.

NLM - use him as sub again. He does well as sub.

Gumbleton - has been our best KF the last 2 weeks! Why would he be dropped? Third match in would expect better as well as i'd predicted 2nd up syndrome for gumby against cats. He was lively when they got the ball near him which wasn't often enough.

Out:
Monfries - didn't get to enough contests and squibbed quite a number. Needs a VFL match to earn his spot back and run out 4 quarters.

Melksham - similar to Monfries. Doesn't get involved enough and squibs it on occasions. Extremely soft against Geelong and has to be dropped.

Hille - liability. Pathetic in ruck, ordinary around ground and didn't give much up forward. Gets a reprieve if Ryder doesn't come up.

Baguley - look tired and struggled against a top team. Prefer Browne this week.

Dell'Olio - didn't get involved enough. Would prefer another player capable of pushing into midfield given we already have Davey and Jetta in similar role.

In:
Winderlich - to play as forward/back-up mid. Our current small forwards generally are not good enough to push into midfield. Winderlich is.

Lonergan - at least makes a contest and would have been handy against cats and should be so against hawks.

Browne - deserves his chance after multiple good games in VFL.

Ryder - praying he comes up this week.

Hocking - straight back into the midfield tagging mitchell.

Not coming in:

McVeigh - he's as slow as Hille at present and would be a liability.
Pears - has only played one full VFL match prior to today. Give him one more week.
Hurley - said himself he won't be back until Adelaide match at the earliest.

Hille really has to go. Did nothing around the ground and when he into the forward line he just got in the way of gumby and the the geelong defenders rebouned so easily

Mcveigh :\

Wouldn't be swinging the axe on more than 4 players (granted I didn't watch the game, so i wouldn't know which 4) as i don't think it's warranted. We certainly don't have 5 players guaranteed of deserved selection for next week.

Enough of overrating melksham this year his development has stalled. Absolute liability.

More importantly jimmy needs a plan B. teams have figured us out.

A couple months ago we would be beating teams up, last night we were smashed by 30 contested possessions. Unacceptable!! They better draw a line in the sand next Friday or it could get ugly.

I think part of the problem is that we believe we can run games out strong, so almost 'defer' effort in a sense until the second or third quarter. It's a kind of lazyness, I guess, that has crept into the team slowly as the season has progressed. The problem is that if you give an opponent the jump at this end of the season, it's too hard to just put the burners on in the last quarter and run over the top of them.

The other problem is that football always gets tougher with each subsequent round and a good team early in the season has to keep pushing harder and harder to maintain the edge. A level of effort and skill to win a game in round 1 may not be enough in round 16, everything else being equal.

Finally, injuries haven't helped us. 5 of our best 22 out is a fair chunk of our core group of players who contribute to a winning team synergy. I don't blame this year's strength program at all. It's been like this every year since about 2007 and I think it's just a combination of really bad luck and a hugher proportion of players who are predisposed to injury I guess. There may also be other factors, like the condition of training/playing surfaces, but this would be minimal, I would have thought.

I dont think its time to swing the axe, however if guys like Hocking Ryder Hurley Zaharakis and Hibberd come back from injury we would have close to our best side on the park then there would be no excuses...

Those suggesting dropping NatRat to play a full game here's an idea...given him a full game in the firsts. We couldn't do any worse.

Out: Monfries (just wasn't interested), Melksham (needs a spell), Dell'Olio (can't really have him out there atm)
In: Hurley, Hocking, Winderlich

B: Baguley, Fletcher, Carlisle
HB: Dempsey, Hooker, Heppell
C: Stanton, Watson, Hocking
HF: Jetta, Hurley, Davey
F: Crameri, Gumbleton, Hardingham
R: Bellchambers, Myers, Howlett
Int: Hille, Dyson, Lovett-Murray, Winderlich (sub)

Let's just take a breath here.

Sweeping changes could do more harm then good.

Winders has now put 3 games in the VFL, but with 15 months out of the game will take time.

Hocking will come back in and I would suggest for Melksham.

Once Hurley is fit Im for playing Hurley, Crameri, & Gumby all forward. Options that would stretch any defense!
