Jimmy Mac to play for GWS

He's going to be 35 next month, surely he's too old to be playing for another two seasons after already having a year out of the game?

I think it's play for a year than retire than go into coaching. I have heard they offer Luke Power a 3 year deal where he plays for 1 year than retires again than does 2 years of coaching.

And I think they also do some coaching in their first year to.

Its a somewhat smart move by GW$...they get the leadership that the two players provide, then they will leave the list..meaning they wont need to give up any youngsters too early when they need to make their list smaller.

However despite saying the above....I freaking hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great player. Dunno about putting on the boots again though?

Still, Bailey is gone so J Mac is welcome back anytime. :p:thumbsu:

i've seen him quite a few times this year, even very recently, working out at my local gym. He has dropped a few kilos and is very light on, extremely light on imo.

Then there is also the well established view that the game had passed him by. It will only be more pronounced after a year out of the game. But such is the quality of GWS's appeal and recruitment of senior experienced players, they are looking to just grab hold of anything.

They may as well try and recruit RDB whilst they're at it!

seriously will probably end up hurting JMac more than you. LOL I like JMac but 35 years of age in the modern day game. Not sure he has thought this one through. But good luck I suppose.
Pretty sure he will probably only play 8-10 games and probably all of them at home, just like an on field coach around the stoppages and what not.

Frankly, I disagree. I loved McDonald, but there's nothing worse than seeing a champ's legacy lowered by playing on too long. Could he have played in another year? Probably. Is it a travesty that he didn't? I don't think so. The whole thing's been way overblown for mine. Sorry, just my opinion.
Too much sense here mate.

In a bad season supporters tend to go searching for isolated factors to blame or put their hat on - answers that just aren't there. McDonald would have been a band-aid on a festering wound at best.

His time was up, just like Power at Brisbane (ironically at GWS also). He did a hammy in his final year (2010) at the Dees and with the speed of the game and the expectations on him at GWS I really don't want to see him do the same thing again. Power got 20 games this season (2011), is 2 years younger than Junior and still got turfed - people need to wake up and smell the coffee.

This sort of thing will only continue across clubs. Some Saints players found out they had "retired" through the media (something I hope our club never does) but the point is their retirement was enforced upon them as well.

If Macca did play for GWS, which I highly doubt, I wish nothing but the absolute best for him.
Agreed, if the opportunity exists at GWS good luck to him.

Surely a compromise where he retired from senior footy but remained around the club playing in the 2s and mentoring younger blokes would have been best?

Pretty sure this will happen, he has to be on the list to play 2's

I love Junior.

I really wanted to hate GWS though.

Yep, I'm torn too but currently I'm leaning more towards hate.

Whenever I see Allen or Sheedy I want to spew.

I couldn't give a **** to be honest. It's a good move by GWS to get veteran mindsets - which GC really lacked this year.

All the best.

I meant for you guys. We've delisted Harding and Rawlings by consent last two years. Harding playes for Werribee and works with the club still and our young blokes there. Not sure if Rawlings will play twos but is going to have a coaching mentoring role. Surely Juniour could have played for Casey and given the youngsters the benefit of his experience?

He was pissed he was retired, he thought he had another 12 months, so no way he would've stuck around

I though he was done and dusted in 2010, had no qualms with him being retired. A joke, surely, he's going to be on a playing list next year.

Players are often forceably retired, or announced via the media etc. (St Kilda last week)

I'm really unsure why we've copped so much flak for this

If they players had / have a problem with this, they can either piss off, or work harder to ensure they're not the next one tapped on the shoulder

Look at Bruce, you'd have to think he'd be lucky to get another 12 months with the Hawks. Could've played on this year and perhaps next, and retired a club favourite.

I think its such a smart move by GWS to get Junior on board. He won't last the full 22 games, he'll probably play only 8-10 as someone else has already suggested, but I don't think that matters. The young kids will benefit a lot from his presence

Hopefully GWS doesn't have a better 2012 than MFC. They have a coach we could have had 4 years ago, they have our ex-captain, a good young list (which MFC has) and a mix of older players who can guide them along the way (which we don't have). We all talk about the great young list at MFC....well we're asking this list to produce all the champions that will be required to win a flag...otherwise we continue to live in hope, probably with another rookie coach who will be learning on the job. Don't forget we aren't the only club with young players with potential...everyone else won't stand still waiting for MFC to develop a premiership team. If you ask me we need an experienced coach - don't waste time on another untried assistant if we can't get Ross Lyon, and we need to be aggressive with the list. Mix it up a bit.

I really wanted to hate GW$ though.

Certainly doesn't stop me.

Doesn't matter who GW$ get to play for them, or G€ for that matter, they will always be foul, contemptible, soulless and obscene franchises created in test tubes, to the manifest detriment of real clubs and real supporters, and the sport of Aussie Rules as a whole.

Neither of these franchises have any right to exist in the AFL.

Best of luck to Junior, he must be getting a nice pay day out of it.

Already at the very top of my list of most respected players, he managed to climb higher over the way he handled his knifing at the Dees. Fairly acrimonious stuff, would have understood him potting the club at every opportunity.

I'm sure there are a few comments in the immediate aftermath that I'm forgetting, but he was a great servant and a class act.

He could play for the Satan's Babypunchers and I would still support him. ;)
