JLT 1 2018: GWS v Collingwood

Considering this who is missing from our squad with all bar Williams to return, Toby Greene, Rory Lobb, Brett Deledio, Tom Scully, Jacob Hopper and Zac Williams, am very happy with that performance as a 1st hitout.

I look forward to MB threads about us getting Ship cheaply

Thought Finlayson was good, Shaw a bit further up the ground linked up well and looks a good move especially seeing Whitfield come out of defence. Cogs is set for a big year, 13 contested possessions at over 80% DE he just owned that centre area. A lot to like about Shipley and Simpson surprised me with his work against Grundy around the ground but would much love Lobb there.

Good signs and skills I reckon were right up there for pre-season - or maybe Collingwood just made us look good.

Just preseason , but looks like business as usual with a real appetite for defensive pressure. Would like to see our minds lower their eyes and not predictably bomb to top of goal square 80% of time.

I'd be happy to see Whitfield halfback, Tomlinson wing and Finlayson slot in to backline.

I am a big fan of Flynn, but he looks another season off to compete at afl level.

Taranto a jet. Himmelberg underrated. Perryman looked to hurt his back. The kids will need to develop in NEAFL with Langdon looking the most likely early on.

Thanks for everyone's input. Missed the game tonight so good to see some good wraps of some of the younger guys - particularly Shipley and Finlayson

Shipley went alright, even succeeded with a don’t argue, which everyone in Campbelltown has to learn pretty early on, he coughed up the ball shortly afterwards but quickly made amends in helping to lay a tackle.

What’s happened to Williams?

Agree with most of what was said earlier on player assessments. Whitfield looked brilliant at half-back, looks primed for a great year. Shiel & Cogs were excellent. Heater played well. Kelly had lots of touches but didn't think he did enough with them - but he'll improve. Shipley did some good things but also made mistakes; similar story for Langdon. Finlayson the standout possible bolter for mine - looked really composed, showed a big boot (similar to Wilson TBH!). Only question is whether he makes the backline too tall i.e. is he nimble enough to play on the small/medium forwards?

Did his Achilles in the preseason & out for the whole year.

Bummer, I didn’t know that :(

Yeah, that’s the only thing I see with TOJ, we have a few talls down back. But like HH he was actually recruited as a forward, so could be used up there, or as a swing man. I’ve seen him do some nice things between the arcs.

I like what I’ve seen from TOJ for a long time now, but damn, I like what I saw last night best. He’s ready.

Who does he push out?

For me, it's more a case of 'who does he keep out'?

I'm looking at it from a perspective of replacing Zac Williams & Nathan Wilson from last year's defensive line-up, with Davis, Corr, Tomlinson, Haynes & Shaw being the given selections in a 7-man defensive suite. With Whitfield likely taking one spot, then there's one available for a running medium defender. The other options would therefore be: Adam Kennedy, Matt Buntine (however both injured so not available to start the year), Isaac Cumming, Matt Perryman, Brett Deledio or Ryan Griffen. There's a number of different perspectives that you can look at with regard to team selection & team balance.

Davis is secure but I don't feel Corr's spot is 100% secure. Tomlinson brings something unique with his running and Haynes with his marking, but if TOJ can prove to be a good man defender to go with his disposal I think he could potentially squeeze Corr out.

Any player is at risk if someone else is producing more than them; however, I'd interpret previous performance & team selections in a way that I think Corr would be more secure than Tommo. However, that's certainly a personal view, not an absolute. Conversely, we do know that there are 2 defender positions required from who played last year, and TOJ played really well, so naturally the question I ask is whether he can fill one of the vacant positions (style, role, capability) rather than replace an existing player.

It's an interesting side-discussion.

We play a very varied four KPD system:
  • Davis - all around champ - can mark, can counter attack, can defend.
  • Haynes - elite at intercept marking which is a big part of our game plan, ok at defending.
  • Corr - good at defensive assignments, ok at counter attacking.
  • Tomlinson - elite at counter attacking and specialised defensive assignments, can mark, ok at defending.
I think TOJ is a most like-for-like replacement of Corr - better at the counter attacking and potentially able to defensively lock down a player, but I can see the argument for Tomlinson as well.

However the main reason I'm ruling him out of playing one of the free half-back flanker roles is because we've seen him twice this year and both games as far as I could tell he was playing as a tall while others got the flanker positions.

Great discussion. I'd agree that he's largely played tall (although last night he certainly spent some time on Brayden Maynard, who at 189cms isn't a tall, although he was often playing deep). However, I perceive that - part from injury (noting we haven't seen Corr this year yet) - GWS is more likely to keep the current 4 tall selections. Last year, Corr was entrusted with some big defensive jobs (e.g. Josh Kennedy WCE) that indicated to me that he was seen as the prime defensive defender, leaving Davis, Tommo & Haynes for the more counterattacking tall defender role. I think that Finlayson has been less the 1-on-1 defender and more the counter-attacker; however concede that these labels cannot be applied 100% cleanly.

Bottom line, TOJ has stepped up and is worthy of a chance in first grade; the question is how to we strengthen the team with his conclusion, and can we include him to solve one of our current deficiencies.

Good question, but I don't have a good answer. Bear with me while I talk to the question ...

Leon tends to favour a 3 tall forward line, so that leaves 4 spots for small forwards (or resting mids). Last year that would have been Greene, Smith, Johnson/Deledio (bracketed due to their run of injuries), Taranto with MdB slotting in with the inevitable injuries. Reid & Lloyd also got games due to injuries last year. With Johnson & Smith moving on, Greene, Deledio, Taranto & MdB would seem to have the 'incumbent' status - but both Greene & Deledio haven't trained yet, so might be struggling to make round 1. Add in that Leon may change to 5 medium/small forwards (signalled by GWS' recruitment strategy last year), then there's definitely a possibility that one or even two forward spots are available in round 1. Bonar was OK without being great in the AFLX & Swans games. The article announcing the JLT Round 1 squad, however, quotes a GWS coach singling out Langdon and Lloyd as 2 of the top 5 improvers during the pre-season. That to me would tend to put them ahead in the running for Round 1 selection. The 'so what' of all that, IMHO, is that it's still very open for the forward line selection both in terms of who's available due injuries & who impresses during the pre-season games. In short Bonar would have a chance, but would only cement a spot during the JLT games (and since he's not playing against Collingwood, he's got one game left) in competition with Langdon, Lloyd & Reid.

Thanks a heap for the detail on that! Very in depth!

Good
- GWS
- No injuries

Bad
- Collingwood

As others have pointed out Shipley was surprising. There may already be a few clubs wondering why they didn’t bid on him.

Whitfield looking a natural at the running defender role.

Positive signs but it’s only Collingwood
