Quicky

I think you'll see WHE play a lot around the flank with stints in the square

Very good mark and kick so can be that lead up forward who delivers inside 50

Still expect him to kick 25 goals if fit and healthy.

Elliott was playing out of the goal square in the JLT. WHE did the same a lot last year. So did De Goey and Stephenson. I expect we will rotate that full forward role a bit chasing the most favourable mismatch for us. It's very dangerous.

It still may leave a crowded forward line if we are not careful. Potentially too crowded? We are blessed with options which is great. I just worry we will try to stuff everyone in only to make our forward 50 as crowded as a New York subway station. That won't work. We need to be conscious of that and make sure we keep a good balance. Good issue to have!

Sweet yours was amidst a bunch of pretty downcast posts towards Reid and I hadn’t read the OP for a few hrs so it was a bit hard to catch the reference.

That assessment of Reid was OTT for mine, but in fairness much of it in general was correct. He does still use it reasonably well, he competes well and I prefer him to Roughead (marginal call though), but that still has him 4th in line. In the context of this thread though it doesn’t fit that well. I think the only out Reid has is it was still of a better standard than a poor game from Cox.

TradeDraft an assessment of Reid having 2 seasons left in him is more generous than some of your work pumping up Aish! This is his last year at Collingwood.
TD can pump up a few at once when filled with the milk of human kindness, such as after a win. There is not a snowball's chance in hell that we will get another season after this one out of Reid. You say, his worst is not worse than Cox's worst, but his best is behind him, while Cox's best we got to witness in the preliminary final against Richmond. I know which of the 2 players I would prefer playing forward and ruck.

Reid may have a metamorphosis, a sudden belief that his limbs are again lithe and strong. He may discover a spring in his step that carries him over packs to mark the ball and his former dead eyed Dick kick for a goal. Or more likely his aging frame will just languish in the VFL, where by the end of TD's 2020, he will be Dead Man Playing

I thought Thomas was excellent for a first hit out. He was particularly clean around stoppages.
I am not a doubting Thomas type, but he surprised me against Fremantle. He was one of our best without kicking a bag of goals.

Thank you for highlighting my secondary point re Cox. As you rightly pointed out his best has Reid covered which would mean that there’s a much larger gap between his best and worst. When you see the entire spectrum of it through a finals series (PF and QF) it’s not exactly a reliable recipe for success. I do feel like a broken record with Cox, he is the best we’ve got unfortunately and he’ll probably hold Reid out.

Sier gone past him, I think he'll struggle to see any game time this year
Sier did go past him. Got given games, and remained injury free. If the same happens with Wills there's no reason why he can't catch up. 2 bears on the ground is better than 1.

WIll come down to match ups and where we can take advantage.

No reasons, except that he’s slow, a below average kick, and his vision in congestion is only average.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Wills, and think he’s been unlucky over the past couple of years on the injury front, but the idea that he could catch up to Sier at this point is wishful thinking.

The thing with Sier is, he gets the ball.
This will be Wills’ challenge.
When opportunity presents, to get the ball and earn his way in.

Yeah, he was practically invisible for 3 and a half quarters, then did some nice things in the last 10 minutes when everyone was totally rooted.
But he was the reason why Beams marked that ball and kicked our first goal in the game in the first quarter. It was from a kick from Daicos.

I thought it was a real positive that we kept their talls in check despite the fact that Freo had a heap more inside 50s.

Our defence has a new dynamic now with Roughead and Moore 200cm+ defenders with agility. Last year, we were well undersized. Considering most teams are going to play 2 rucks this year, we need a taller defender.

Roughead didn't look over burdened with agility against Fremantle. I only hope he was coasting because he looked slow and cumbersome and appeared to have 3 goals kicked on him in the first half. Moore on the other hand looked fantastic.

Bit Harsh. I thought he was Good Today and just about every player was In and Out of the Game.

Aish was Good and Ball use was Really Good and Made some good Quick Descions when Needed.

Thought he was very good Dave. Looks to have gained 1/2 a yard and is in really good nick. May well make HBF his own if he can bring that week to week.

Yeah he had a rough (no pun intended lol) first half, but second half, he stopped Cox from kicking any goals.. so he got better as the game went on.

200cm defenders/ruckmen don't grow on trees, so he'll certainly be helpful.

Review players v Dockers somewhere in WA

1. Stephenson was a menace for opponents. Looked so dangerous, played fine. Very quick. A menacing game.

4. Grundy played better and better the longer it went. Monstered all and sundry. Once he nails those deft taps, he’ll pass even Gawn. In top 2 rucks and looks AA bound again.

5. Elliott was classy. Welcome back. Played well and just operates at a higher level than others. Will match well with Stephenson and co.

8. Langdon fine game. Very cool game, cool customer. Rock solid dependable game. Absolute lock on best 22.

10. Pendlebury put on a clinic, kept us looking good when Freo did their best work early. Best on ground when he was playing. He is so fit looking. Elite.

11. Beams. Welcome back. Played a nice game, did some classy things, racked up 20 plus easy as you like possessions. Scored. As Dermie aptly described, Beams took block and just faced the bowling without getting out. Didn’t dig in, just faced the bowling.

14. Aish did his thing. Looked a dependable game, likely in opening game. Solid without being spectacular.

17. Brown C played ok, still looks smallish to me, great attitude as he doesn’t stop and gets on with it. Depth at the moment.

18. Varcoe nailed the game. that pressure stuff he does is elite. Let him roam forward as so dangerous. Good four quarter game. Big tick.

19. Greenwood always looks fit and never stops as was the case in the game. Tough nut too. If he’s our solid depth we’re going ok then. Solid dependable game.

20. Reid is at the cross roads. Hot day ok, but he didn’t seem to at least halve the contests. I’d certainly play him v Carlton and let us see him again. In the danger zone as looks slower and basic. Not a good game.

21. Phillips ran as he does. Unobtrusive game, not great, just got the business done. No harm game.

22. Sidebottom elite running. Next best after Pendlebury. Loved his tackle on teammate, umpire sucked in. Heading for AA again. Just a terrific game yet again.

23. Roughead seemed to do his job, was ok. Not highlighting in play but seemed a reasonable hit out.

24. Thomas played well, he knocks up getting into the play. Be a terrific foil for the two tattooed ones in Stephenson and Elliott. Played very well and looks like round 1 is his spot to,lose.

25. Crisp dependable. He’s playing now, back to his usual terrific dependable play.

26. Daicos started slow finished fast. Does show skill, but my major consern is he looked terrific when the game was really done. Seems fit though and has skill. Still a work in progress. Interesting watch.

28. Murphy played a nice game with pure courage. The guy does not back away from the contest. Nice skills shown at times. Looks the goods long term, does he start round 1? Probably not, but getting there. A real keeper.
That courage goes a long long way.

30. Moore showed why he is a mainstay when fit. Wore the position like a glove. Looks mature now and looks stronger but still very athletic. Nice capable game. He’s going to be a real difference maker.

33. Wills at the cross roads. Didn’t see much of it in the game. Got some contested ball. I’d absolutely play him v Carlton to see him again. I’m afraid he’s up against it, cross roads. Quiet game. Nice goal after a free.

34.Brown T shows something. Work in progress for mind. Taller than brother. Seems to have great attitude. Looks fearless too. The Brown boys I have to say have courage by the bucket full, and great attitude. I blame Gavin.
Interesting watch.

35. Quaynor was a fiddly game. Can see why he was rated. Looks like he’s 20, strong solid. Works hard by the looks. But also did too much, and got a great lesson in the tempo of the game. Don’t see a round 1 start myself but likely does play seniors at some point. Plenty to work with. Fiddly game.

39. Crocker got involved especially as the game wore on. Better on a wing where he was allowed to roam. Depth at this stage. Ok game that improved as he went along. Just an ok kind of game nothing screaming pick me.

41. Mihocek very good game especially third quarter. He again gets under the guard. What a terrific story, comes in late career wise and looks like he totally belongs. And can he find a goal or help create one. Lock round 1.

Agree with the above especially Wills.
Against Carlton this week I would give him a lockdown job on Cripps. He is so poor in so many areas that I see this as his only potential position.
He had first use in the Freo on so many occasions but just could not pick the ball up or execute effectively - so stopping big midfield bodies is an obvious position.
If he had speed I'd say that he could replace Greenwood in the "stopping" role, but sadly its another deficiency he has.

I still think he's more suited to defence. His whole style in an aerial contest is that of a defender. He looks to make early body contact, with the goal of working his opponent under the footy and marking it from behind with both feet on the ground. It's a defender's approach. It doesn't work as a method for a forward, whose job is to present at the footy

I thought it was interesting that Pearce consistently did this to him.

Overall, I thought Reid's performance was average at best but I'm not sure if that says more about Reid or how good Pearce looks. Cox into that side and Reid likely gets either Hamling or Logue as an opponent which may well result in a different outcome.

Defenders instincts. Reid gets to the ball drop too soon, which means he has to prop underneath it, making him really easy to shift underneath the ball. Needs to prop earlier, so that he's hitting the ball drop on the move and thus much harder to spoil. I think it's too late in his career for him to be retrained.

They need to persist with Wills and find a spot for him. He's so good in and under, is a tackling machine and has such strength through the core - we have to make use of all that somewhere on the ground.
I think it’s a balance between grunt and class. We have a lot of grunt not enough skill and pace, for this reason I think he misses out...

Our Backline is better now with those 2 there then it was during the Finals

It's pointless trying to judge his abilities until he gets consistent games. Ony then will he start to improve. I see enough in him to look past the things that he can improve on at this stage. It does seem that I have more faith in Rupert than most pundits. I hope the Collingwood coaching staff have just as much.
