I'm up in Sydney at a dental course and couldn't watch the game. Instead of the 'you said. I said' stuff how about some serious reviews of the match being posted i.e. player by player reviews, positioning changes, contested stats etc. What were the positives out of the game?

I've taped the thing and will watch it tomorrow night so what should I watch for?

You didn’t say forward targets. You said a functioning forward line. A forward line (and that term really is archaic anyway) is far more than its ability to be a marking target.

The point remains that our ability to hit the scoreboard, particularly in the second half of the year, was very good, despite the fact that we couldn’t win the football. That simply doesn’t happen if your forward line is dysfunctional. A forward line needs to be judged both as an entirety and in the context of the style of game the coaching staff want the club to play. In the last 10 games, on both fronts, our forward structures were far from our biggest problem, and, in most observers’ eyes, our greatest strength.

You don’t need to agree with me. But I still think you are wrong. And your dismissive tone when the above was pointed out (albeit less fulsomely than I just have) indicates that either you aren’t willing to consider alternative points of view or you lack football knowledge.

I don’t really care if you were wounded by my comments. I’ll happily go back to not posting on this site if you feel so aggrieved.

There were lots of points to consider. Lots and lots of points.

Zorko looks primed for another big year. 33 possessions, 1 goal and 6 tackles. Rayner showed great endeavour with 13 possessions, 9 tackles and 2 behinds. McCluggage and Berry also did their bit with 18 possessions and 15 possessions respectively. Special mentions to Bell who had 20 possessions and 9 tackles and Robinson who had 20 possessions and 7 tackles. Martin, Taylor and Lester were all good as well.

We need 6 more players of his ilk and we will be a finals side.

This is the problem. You seem to have this view that a forward setup is static at 6 players named there. It isn’t. We would have had at least 10 guys run through there. You have to judge that in totality. And it simply doesn’t make sense to argue that it is dysfunctional when our scoring was so effective given the lack of supply in terms of ball winning.

Would it be better if Hipwood and Walker were superstars? Of course. But the group, in its entirety, demonstrated it’s effectiveness last year.

They were...
I said we were still without a target, Walker is impotent and Hipwood is green.
I think if our talls were getting seperation from each other and leading to different spots they both look better and we are more likely to create one on ones.
Also barry hall said on the mmm coveridge hipwood needs to be able to at least be able to get the ball to drop in front of him instead of going behind through his hands .

The seperation thing has been a problem for us for quite a while now.
Put it simply our forwards need to lead to different spaces ,we compete each other for the same mark way too often.
Like moe says SPREAD OUT.

Yeah, I'd agree with the previous comment that we were without a presenting target..They were well held at times and failed to break free ..Having said that though, the supply was just banged in and didn't aid them... whether we went wet weather football mode and the plan was just get the ball inside 50's to give the smalls the opportunity ..dunno..

Walker is going to be our most important player this year. Eric miles off being consistent
I like Walker a lot. Strong mark, mobile and a good kick.

Carn't read anything from the JLT games , coaches experiment and concentrate on differing aspects of their game plan , the result is secondary. And add conditions like yesterday in the mix just makes the result a non event

Look at the stats , we should have won by five goals , many aspects would have pleased Fagan , aspects than needed work last year , add beams and our contested footy improves for a start that is our biggest challenge .

Give us a dry hard fast deck and you will see how far we have come

I think you should get the coffee going because it was a monumental yawn-fest. It belted down in the first quarter and after that it was like Glenferrie Oval in the 60's. There were precious few good passages of play. Some unintelligent efforts, giving cheap 50's away and frees inside D50. Forward line had no system at all, and our decision-making going into F50 continues to leave me white-knuckled in frustration. Mitch Robinson may well be a human battering ram but he's not the smartest bloke on the list by a fair margin.

Highlights for me were Zorko being a class above, Berry's involvement, McStay did some really nice things, Hodge was Hodge, Witherdon didn't make the same clangers as in JLT1, Lewis Taylor was busy, Darcy seems to have matured and Raynor cemented a spot for week 1 IMO. Sam Mayes has added a dash through the centre square to his repertoire, which he needed because I otherwise think his development has topped out.

Josh Walker also seems to have grown some hair, a la Brent Guerra.

Thankfully Beams will be back for Round 1 because we need his polish. Hipwood will be better on a dry track at Etihad, similarly I cant wait to see Charlie Cameron and Bundy work together on a fast surface.

Walker's second half of 2017 was really good, leading up to and marking on the wing. Problem is he's got no class. I wouldn't see him getting a game in a premiership team. Eric has got some tricks but is still too light to make a contest. Our biggest problem continues to be the kick into F50. It's just awful.

It is interesting that our forward coach was a back pocket player.

As interesting as our AFL coach never playing in the AFL?

To be honest I am not completely sure that Christiensen has done enough for a round 1 lock. Nor Cameron for that matter. But i think they will both be there. On experience alone.
Atleast it will be a dry track and we will get to see what the team is all about this year.
Not the best of preparation, but it is what it is.

Sorry can't agree with you on Walker.

Totally agree with your disagreeing on Walker. I’m tipping he has his BREAKOUT YEAR in 2018. Expect him to kick plenty of goals this year.

Walker is a very balanced footballer and if we can improve our delivery inside 50,he is going to be very damaging. He is only young and I have no doubt his best footy is in front of him.

Agree with all the above. Excepting Mayes who I thought was back to some of the worst of his sea-gulling, perimeter wandering. Not a good look. Like Rich, as a senior member should be setting the example. Which they often don't.

Walker not only has grown some hair, but maybe a bit of aggro. That's ok, but maybe get a kick first.

Re all the spice above about our "forward" line. Gee, who would have thought you'd have to modify your attack on the pill because it's wet. What is this wet stuff anyway? First lessons for wet footy- get in front, get low on the ball pick-up.

Our major problem still remains our backline although our new/old major general made a difference.

I think he fills an important role pinch hitting in the ruck, his back half of last season was better than passable. We got rid of all the other kpfs. The only one I see going past him short term, is the big O if he can hit the scoreboard consistently.

Yeah, not sure the benefit of the jlt series.... it will be interesting to see how far we have come...Keeping in mind the oposition has also improved...I'm not expecting much.. (Besides unleashing a few stars of the future)....a couple more wins will keep me content

Wonder if Eric needs an eye test. He does miss a lot of marks that he should be taking.
You can understand him dropping a few yesterday, but he gets himself into positions to take marks often. But they mostly drop through the cracks. Its like the ball gets to him quicker then he expects.
Johnno Freeman had an eye problem that needed to be corrected which allowed him to take more marks.
