I saw it, did you? He was ok, but to say he was so great he is now a nailed on starter for R1 is hyperbole. As I said I personally think he makes the 22 but I could see us covering Brown with Milera/Smith/resting mid. I think it will ultimately depend on how we are planning to rest Gibbs/Sloane/Brad when they aren’t on the ball.
With Brown out I'd say Kelly is a lock

I’d send Gibbs or Douglas back before playing Kelly. Having both Kelly and Hartigan in the side is just not viable. Their skills are atrocious.

As for Hartigan vs Keath being a tough choice, I find that a bit rich. It’s easy. One is an infinitely better one on one player against talls, and he also has infinitely better skills and makes better decisions. He is also coming off a fantastic finish to 2018 and his first uninterrupted preseason. I’m baffled by it.

The only time it’s a tough choice is if we’re playing against a side with a mosquito fleet forward line. Hartigan comes into the frame there because he has shown that he can play on smalls (eg R Gray). I don’t see Hawthorn as that side.

Look, maybe Keath ends up playing against GWS and then gets a gig in Rd 1. I just think the fact that he’s on an extended interchange, and the fact that Campo said that only 22-23 guys are actually going to play tomorrow night has all the makings of Hartigan playing the full game and Keath essentially being an emergency.

Hope I’m wrong.
Hawthorn are likely to play Gunston, Roughy and a bunch of smalls.

Don't know where you get the idea Keath is a better 1v1 player.... He isn't. Also, I think you're overrating Keaths skillset.

Kelly is a perfectly adequate lock down defender.

Unfortunately with a thin list last year we tried to turn him into a running/wing type player.Way above his pay grade.

I’m quite comfortable with him in defence and his capacity to win the ball and get it on to someone more creative.

There will be a lot more 1 on 1 contests in forward 50s this year so it would be no surprise we're leaning towards Harto over Keath. Keath is obviously far batter at everything with ball in hand so will be an interesting battle this year if the match committee decide they will only play one or the other.

Jeez I forgot we played Kelly on the wing last year at times, what a massive fail

Necessity....

There is never a necessity to playing Kelly as a winger. He'd be very high on the list of players that are completely Ill suited to the role.

Keath wasn't that good last week either, although I too think he's a better player marginally
Keath was unnoticeable. And that is exactly what I want from my Key defender...

Hartigan was very very noticeable... And not for anything good!

Their respective games were chalk and cheese. Hell, it was chalk and a grainy pixelated picture of cheese on an iphone 1

Have to agree. Even if you have the opinion Keath wasn’t that good, Hartigan was horrible.

Hartigans problem is usually between his ears. He has the physical traits to be the best FB in the league. But when he's rusty or panicked he is a straight up liability on the field. I hope for his sake (and ours) that he shakes off the rust from last week tonight, cause he looked real real rusty!

Oh I do, however there were much better solutions available. Even Mackay on a wing is that better solution.
I reckon Kelly is more creative.

See my post in the Mackay thread.

Neither are a good option on the wing though.

That is probably what Walshy meant when he said he would be a good player with x amount of games under his belt. All the physical traits but needs to know he is capable. That comes with experience.

Not there yet though. Even though he has passed the amount of games Walshy said he needed under his belt.

Mate, he was straight up Worst on Ground, seriously pick a guy that had a worse outing?

I'm not saying he's not gonna get back to his best, but its clear that the new rule change is designed to put KPD (specifically FB's) under more intense pressure then ever before. And we are gambling that our FB, who is not widely known for his great skills under pressure, and is coming back from 2 knee surgeries, as well as a limited preseason, and a super poor showing, manages to have a form reversal in a matter of weeks.

All the while we have a healthy guy playing very well waiting in the wings.

Mackay is quicker and a better kick.
Debatable.

My money would be on Kelly, in fact I think "Kelly is a shit kick" is purely a Big Footy thing, kicks within his capabilities and generally finds his targets.

I think the fact that he knows he's not a penetrating North-South style kicker like Smith or Milera shows a distinct sign of maturity and self awareness actually. Kelly takes to the safer option which is usually far more East-West and within 35 meters, but if he's finding his target then i'm fine with that.
