I’m getting too excited, not long now.

Same fixture in season and we walk away with a 100 point win. They are a rabble, it’s the disdain talking but still a valid. Thank god Murphy didn’t fall to us in the draft, what a passenger.

Aside from the last quarter I felt for the large part we defended well as a team, skills and execution are still off but we still managed to transition the ball end to end via handball and run through their zone. 110 more possessions and still won the tackles, we were camped in their half for most of the day. There was a lot to like today.

BOG - for me was a tough one but I’ll go with Crisp. I thought contribution across the team was fairly even today. He just rips in week in week out, and since moving to the backline has taken it up a level. Defends well aerially and his run and carry is brilliant, sets us crucially going forward and is good shifting from defence to offence when we get a turnover.

Sidebottom - it’s almost cruel to have so much class in one body. Coasted along today, could be a Brownlow year for him.

Treloar - his work rate is out of control, running toward goal that is. Would still prefer he didn’t have so many inside 50’s, burns the ball too much when he’s coming off a searching run. His linking in transition and breaking lines is second to none. Tackles hard too.

Beams - another that does not waste possessions in close. His handball out of contest to somebody running full pelt toward our goal is amazing. Will step it up for the season proper, so much class and courage. Will be a clearance king once he works out how Grundy taps.

Pendlebury - only superlatives for this man as a leader, I was a detractor in previous years. He is playing a more team oriented role, but when he has ball in hand things happen!

Grundy - played at about 50% capacity today this is what you want from your Rolls Royce in the preseason. Not his best game by his standards. Loved his lace out left foot pass into the 50. Should have come off in the last after his knock.

C Brown - has a cracking game I thought, moved well in traffic and disposed of the ball well. Handballs to advantage are a key strength. Broke the lines well today.

T Brown - it’s almost like there is a brotherly rivalry, he was quiet this week although game time was low.

Maynard - first game back. Will be better for the run, was very rusty skill wise. Goes hard, not his best game but needs to tip in if he wants to keep his spot in the 22.

Langdon - another who was pretty poor today. Didn’t take too many intercepts, and disposal was troublesome. Competes well aerially, but lacks a bit of intent when chasing or hunting a ground ball.

Howe - only played the half, if you didn’t know he was all class you would delist immediately. Hopefully right for round 1

Aish - will have to watch Aish more closely when at the ground. Goes missing too much, not sure if that’s because he’s been given a role as lock down defender. Anybody have a clue?

Moore - say hello to the AA fullback. He is too dominant and Curnow had no hope. I can’t see any forward having his measure this year. His pace, ability to read the flight means that he is rarely caught by surprise in a marking contest. Almost reads it too well, sometimes arrives at the contest too early or with too much pace. That will improve with age and experience. Spreads well with his kicking and speed for his height. Daniher will be no concern come Anzac Day.

Cox - Eddy really needs to push the point with the AFL that they need to apply rules consistently. Cox is always on the wrong side of the umpires. Competes well, I would prefer to see him as the primary target similar to last year...have everybody rove off his crumbs.

Mihocek - you know what you get from him. Competes hard, creates a contest but isn’t a match winner...which is fine you need team players and a foul for Cox.

Varcoe - his stats don’t justify his impact on a game. He’s always there to apply pressure and to make the momentum changing tackle or kick the goal to change the tide. Down on last week, but a lock for round 1 for me.

Elliot - had a bit of a scare in the 2nd where he went off and got treatment. The fact it was both legs suggests cramps, but that can be a sign of sciatic issues too. Hopefully fit for round 1 as everything functions better with him on the field. Pure class and love seeing him roam further up the ground, he doesn’t waste touches and creates opportunities and forward movements.

Goldsack - not sure if he’ll get a game round 1, typical Goldsack game...does the team things well. He’s the glue that keeps things working, covering for others etc. I think on account of that Buckley may play him round 1 actually. Definite top 30 player...meaning as the season unfolds he’ll play more often than not.

Thomas - brilliant again today, he is a class act honestly both in the midfield as marketing target forward or even crumbing. Sharp shooter and great in traffic, basketball skills to the fore.

Mayne - plenty of it but not damaging, needs to be more confident with moving the ball on with purpose. I suspect he is at risk come round 1, but similar to Goldsack in that Buckley loves disciplined role players. I’m not sure we have room for more than 3 of these. Will be horses for courses all year for him I suspect. Might find his way back to a wing again...will be tough with another quality mid in the fold this year.

Phillips - owns his wing role. Had a more composed game this week, that’s my big knock on him. He coughs it up too easy under pressure.

Crocker - he is a good VFL player. Won’t get a game in our forward line and doesn’t have the skills to play midfield or wing.

Greenwood - another disciplined role player, Buckley loves his type but there is only so much room in one team. We need to strike a balance between grunt and class and I don’t think he will find a spot in the team. Although duckwood round 1 will be tempting. Ineffective game for him today, plays a role but needs to do more than apply pressure and tag if he wants to play in this team...his kicking is a problem.

Roughhead - will probably play Rd 1 given Reid’s quads are cooked. Needs to ruck more, I don’t want Grundy to burn out.

Someone on the Hun website commented on a Pies article and said it's time to move Mihocek back to defence because apparently 6-6-6 will be a disadvantage for him. What are people's thoughts?

Callum Brown looked great this week. Daicos was the same the week before. At 20 years of age they are cherry ripe to break into the firsts but will start the season as depth. Could be a few players a bit nervous though *cough* *Aish* *cough*

Non issue for mine as the rule only applies to opening bounces and after goals. The types of kicks that have the most to benefit from the 6-6-6 rule are quick ones out of the centre; as a CHF they're likely to go over his head anyway.

Agree with a lot of the above except I thought that Langdon was okay. Callum Brown looked better than I've seen him.

Our midfield dominance should have translated into more scoreboard pressure, especially early in the match.

Moore looks so good and Roughead is improving and slotting in well. Anyone else think that Moore is getting to look more like his old man?

Mihocek had a poor game by his standards and Crocker was a shocker again.

Grundy worked hard as usual.

Crisp so impressively found form after a layoff.

Hope Elliott is fine.

Player review v wooden spooners 2018

4. Grundy: just a nice run around with some nice parts to it. Very awkward kick in second quarter was odd. But overall the beast is ready for round 1. A nice game.

5. Elliott: shows class, is dangerous, attracts main defenders. Good game. Welcome back Billy. Competent game.

6. Goldsack: not his best ever game, a tad average. Does team stuff. Might be missing round one. Below par today.

7. Treloar: just slayed them. Manic runner too. Could easily win a Brownlow if he puts it all together. Fabulous game.

8. Langdon: another clinic of haughty disdain for appearing bothered.a few mistaken deliveries but overall just a cool cucumber. He’s potential AA. Absolute lock on round 1. Really fine game.

10. Pendlebury: cuts them up 1,000 ways. In second gear today. Very very very solid.

11. Beams: did enough, played ok, never taxed. Can find a goal. Very adequate and had class.

14. Aish: I liked his game, under valued. I think he gets a gig v cats. Just does the business. Good today.

16. Mayne: he will play in two weeks, deserves to play. Solid, dependable. The resurrection continues. Good game.

17. Brown C: terrific first half, managed after that. Really showed good skill and as always first class at getting in with it. Really terrific first half, will be in contention for round 1.

18. Varcoe: pressure acts are his bread and butter. Cruised cleverly through game. Played ok overall.

19. Greenwood: disappointing for mind. Not sighted heavily. Could miss for Sier, Aish, those types. Not his best game.

21. Phillips: owned his wing. Runs and runs. Very very solid game.

22. Sidebottom: clinic in first half, destroyed any opponent. Second half less dominant. Terrific and could win a Brownlow.

23. Roughead: played well, solid, dependable, a rock. Solidified for round 1.

24. Thomas: really really good. Knows how to find the goals. Solid all round today.

25. Crisp: fine fine fine game. Testament to medical staff that he looks like he hasn’t missed a beat all preseason. One of the best today.

30. Moore: very dependable, sure hands. Lost his fitting that I saw, so he’ll have to watch that. Could be AA in defence. Formidable game.

34. Brown T: not sighted on very restricted time for the game. So not really rated as such.

37. Maynard: a typical good solid game.

38. Howe: I thought a bit below average.

39. Crocker: good first half particularly. Good game and better than he gets credit for. However needs to nail goal opportunities. Also needs to trust his decision making, at times. But certainly solid.

41. Mihocek: a tad underwhelming. Likely his least game since he joined the main team.

46. Cox: just a nice run around. No harm game.

Bucks has said that Elliott is right for Round 1 and wanted to come back on the ground. The coaches gave the order to bench him.

Good question! Never thought about it and have as yet no thoughts on it worth expressing. Nevertheless, Mihochek's role seems pertinent in the context of the new rule. I'd be interested in the views of the Apex's, Scodog's and others of that cyber ilk. I can't see a spot for him in defence. He seems more comfortable in attack to me.

Am I turning into Dave or are you all underrating Aish?? Thought he was great and won majority of his contests today.. thought he has been one of our best this preseason
I thought Aish was generally good too, then, when I read the comments of other posters, began to doubt myself, my judgement and my football nouse, not to mention my worth as a human being. Thanks to you and SV for helping restore some equilibrium to my self esteem.

Can’t see why he is pretty good when the ball hits the deck...can mark, tackles and kicks pretty straight. That’s what you need from a modern day forward. I’m not sure his field kicking and oace to rebound are good enough for defence in today’s game.

It is a confounding thing, but when reading others opinions it can bring some doubt if differing from your own views.

As a rule, trust your instinct.
Then reassess if other opinions (you particularly respect) differ.
Then weigh up and go with what you feel.

Today I though Aish did a good job, likely locked up his position game 1 v cats.

Crocker was ok too, I thought. I don’t think he’s in the running game 1, but at least he’s presenting himself.

Everything starts in 11 days.

I love post game player reviews!!!! When my eyes leap from the thread title and plunge into the reviews, I feel like I have been let loose in a football Neverland. Magpie42 (obviously a 'pants' man or woman) provided a minor feast of reading on most of the lads, as well as some deservedly unequivocal thoughts on a few others. Then came SV's quaintly worded phrases, sometimes understating, but generally economical and informative. What a shame its a non drinking night, as the reviews would be best enjoyed with a scotch on ice in hand.

If Grundy wasn’t such a boss and rightfully avatar worthy, you could call yourself The Great Wordsmith, or

Game thoughts:

- We had a poor game in the centre clearances. On the one hand this is just a pre season match. On the other we had a strong midfield group and it's been our achilles heel in recent years. It concerns me. I think the biggest advantage of the 6, 6, 6 system will come from quick centre clearances. Our midfield group has the qualities to take advantage but we always seem to come up short. Is it the structure in there? The personnel are everything you could hope for. Hopefully i'm worried about nothing.

- Our best was far better. Whenever we upped the intensity we got a big run on. We controlled the game with half the team playing at half intensity.

- We looked somewhat listless without our medium forwards. No Stephenson, De Goey or WHE. We'll be more dangerous with them back in. Stephenson and De Goey aee important to stretch a Geelong team that looks like they will be missing some small defenders including Tuohy.

Player review:

Jordan Roughead - I thought he was excellent. Commanded the air and defended astutely. Got the decision to punch or mark right all game. I remain a skeptic but reckon he's a monty for round 1.

Callum Brown - Chalk and cheese from last week. Had real offensive impact when he won the ball with his positive forward running. First time I remember watching him play and thinking there is an AFL player lurking in there.

Jack Crisp - He was amazing the whole game. Won so much footy and gained so much territory with his possessions.

Jeremy Howe - played one half. The worst footy I can ever remember him playing. Turned over every possesion he earned. No impact as third man. Seriously lacking touch for round one. I'd seriously consider Murphy for the 22 to give Howe the time he needs to find touch in the seconds. He was that off.

Josh Thomas - Our most dangerous forward. Should hve kicked 4 or 5 with straighter kicking. Looking sharp.

Adam Treloar - A performance full of intensity. Won a lot of footy and really productive wifh his running game. Great to see before round 1.

Brayden Maynard - I thought he looked pretty sharp so disagree somewhat with the OP.

Darcy Moore - Was all over Curnow who had no answers. I think i'm modt excited by the run he offers. He was also a very safe kick in. Happy for him to do that role especially with Roughead as a long target.

Tom Langdon - Close to flawless with his intercept game. But gave up some footy with his ball use. I reckon the good far outweights the mistakes.

Brodie Grundy - That play where he took a run, took a bounce and nailed the pass was awesome. Wasnt as dominant as you'd expect but barely raised a sweat I reckon. Worry about the corkie but hopefully is okay.

Brody Mihocek - Workmanlike and effective. Just less so than last week. Like his efforts better than McGoverns!

Greenwood - Pretty poor I thought and got exposed in the air.

Varcoe - Love his intensity. Love his street smarts. Always lowers the eyes and hit up a few of our forwards. Played a bit on Jones and lost out whem he went third man up. But hit back with his own leads and goals.

Sidebottom - Class.

Pendles - Class.

Beams - Pretty good for someone playing at 40% intensity. Needs to put in defensively.

Crocker - We seem to using him off the wing and at a guess are getting him to replicate the Mayne roll. Going for some depth. Does a lot right but he is very outside, cant finish in front of goals and doesnt create. Okay game today but doesnt hurt the oppostion.

Cox - Just okay. Needed to be bigger aerial presence.

Tyler Brown - Good clearance player who needs 2 more years to bulk up.

Goldsack - He's no forward. He was okay through sheer will. But isnt dangerous and needs to go back for the regular season.

Mayne - Barely noticed him.

We actually won the centre clearences fairly convincingly (14-8), we just got mauled at the random stoppages around the ground (13-28)
