the most pleasing aspect of the preseason has been the form of Moore , and how solid Roughhead looks at fullback. It was our inability to contain the talls that cost us the GF last year and these are two players that will go a long way to solving that problem.

I was worried that Roughhead might have been finished but he could turn out to be the bargain of the trade period.

It should not be forgotten that Grundy has missed a fair chunk of the preseason post Christmas due to a toe injury - at least 2-3 weeks - same with Howe. So any disappointment with their output or performances in the JLT should be of minor concern. They will both build and improve.
Least of our worries.
I am not going to concern myself with restrained JLT output by Grundy or any other player. Rather they understate their ability and worth now, then produce their real games against Geelong in the season opener. As you say, both have missed foundation work and have some catching up to do.

I thought he looked a bit ordinary in the Fremantle game but appeared a much more likely type against Carlton. Where there's life there's hope. He may, as you say, be this year's bargain basement special.

Agree

This game will also be a good test of our defence with Hawkins and Ratugolea along with a resting Ablett and Dangerfield

Someone on the Hun website commented on a Pies article and said it's time to move Mihocek back to defence because apparently 6-6-6 will be a disadvantage for him. What are people's thoughts?
Brings that Leigh Brown like physicality and aggression to a forward line lacking it, JDG the only other player regularly crashing packs and throwing his weight around. Was poor JLT2 but had a ripper game JLT1. I think the disparity is more about chemistry and the changing dynamics during these practice matches. Put Stevo and JDG back into the F50 and he'll be fine. He's a lock for R1 F50 for mine, especially with Reid now seemingly out of the equation.

BOG - for me was a tough one but I’ll go with Crisp. I thought contribution across the team was fairly even today. He just rips in week in week out, and since moving to the backline has taken it up a level. Defends well aerially and his run and carry is brilliant, sets us crucially going forward and is good shifting from defence to offence when we get a turnover.

Langdon - another who was pretty poor today. Didn’t take too many intercepts, and disposal was troublesome. Competes well aerially, but lacks a bit of intent when chasing or hunting a ground ball.

Aish - will have to watch Aish more closely when at the ground. Goes missing too much, not sure if that’s because he’s been given a role as lock down defender. Anybody have a clue?

Moore - say hello to the AA fullback. He is too dominant and Curnow had no hope. I can’t see any forward having his measure this year. His pace, ability to read the flight means that he is rarely caught by surprise in a marking contest. Almost reads it too well, sometimes arrives at the contest too early or with too much pace. That will improve with age and experience. Spreads well with his kicking and speed for his height. Daniher will be no concern come Anzac Day.

Cox - Eddy really needs to push the point with the AFL that they need to apply rules consistently. Cox is always on the wrong side of the umpires. Competes well, I would prefer to see him as the primary target similar to last year...have everybody rove off his crumbs.

Crocker - he is a good VFL player. Won’t get a game in our forward line and doesn’t have the skills to play midfield or wing.

Roughhead - will probably play Rd 1 given Reid’s quads are cooked. Needs to ruck more, I don’t want Grundy to burn out.
Overall, agree with much of what you wrote but Crispy's ball use dropped him down below quite a few (Treloar, Sidey, Pendles to name a couple) for BOG. Was marginally ahead of Moore as the pick of our defenders though.

Thought Langdon was good, especially given the midfield support was inconsistent allowing too much Carlton F50 entry.

Thought Aish was good, worked hard and was often seen covering for team mates competing against McKay, Curnow etc in marking contests. Had a very good preseason relative to expectations and locked a spot for R1 for mine.

Moore has a long way to go to be in AA contention.

Cox needs to stop playing for frees. He doesn't get well treated by the umps but he's now got a few preseasons under his belt and he needs to start holding his ground better.

Disagree on Roughy. Think we need to settle him as a KPD. It's rare that a KPD offers that 2nd ruck support anyway but we've seen some progression in his development KPD over the preseason and I think for that to continue he needs stability.

Game thoughts:

- We had a poor game in the centre clearances. On the one hand this is just a pre season match. On the other we had a strong midfield group and it's been our achilles heel in recent years. It concerns me. I think the biggest advantage of the 6, 6, 6 system will come from quick centre clearances. Our midfield group has the qualities to take advantage but we always seem to come up short. Is it the structure in there? The personnel are everything you could hope for. Hopefully i'm worried about nothing.

- Our best was far better. Whenever we upped the intensity we got a big run on. We controlled the game with half the team playing at half intensity.

- We looked somewhat listless without our medium forwards. No Stephenson, De Goey or WHE. We'll be more dangerous with them back in. Stephenson and De Goey aee important to stretch a Geelong team that looks like they will be missing some small defenders including Tuohy.
Agree. Out of curiosity, what did you think of Aish's game.

I'd argue that Roughhead seems a pretty good match up for Hawkins. This is one where I think he will do well, but the real test for him will come when he has to match up on a quick or agile forward.

Aish wasn't very prominant but didn't seem to do a lot wrong either. I think as a small defender you are going to have quieter games occasionally with the defensive resposibilities you have. So it doesnt worry me too much. He also cramped up late and I think got managed after that
