Quite a few positives for me yesterday.

The big players all had strong games, Gaff, Shuey and Redden especially whilst the likes of Yeo, Hurn, Sheppard and Jetta were all good. Hutchings managed 20 odd disposals from 44% of game time so fair play to him.

Ainsworth might not have seen too much of the ball but I liked what I saw, no fear and good intent.

Ah Chee was a bit too keen to please and actually spoiled Darling on a couple of occassions, not that that was a particularly hard task on the day. For all his effort, Darling rarely looked like impacting the game.

I'm not really one to look for negatives in a pre-season hit out but Cripps and LeCras were fairly anonymous and I don;t know if it was a game plan but the amount of times we let Port get three big men deep behind our defence was a bit of a worry.

All in all though a very valuable run out and lots of pleasing things to take away.

Cripps...

16 touches, 7 tackles, 2 stoppage clearances, 4 marks, 5 i50 and 2 scoring shots.

Looks like he was playing his role pretty well to me. If he converted his chances in front of goal you have a pretty solid outing.

Happened way to much once Gov was off.

Really Schofield should have stayed back to help Barrass out.

Yeah but that "if" for Cripps has been there for his entire career

Jetta looked so good at half back. I think Yeo and Duggan switching between defence and midfield also looked good.
Our ball movement looks so much quicker with Jetta off HB- he doesn’t often stop and go back on his mark and kicks long to the right option more often than not. The discussion has been about using Jetta to best effect - this seems to be it.

The challenge will come defensively and whether he can consistently perform in the role. No doubt teams will try to expose him the other way.

So Gray got a week. Probably about right. Not that those hopeless commentators would agree ....

I would have liked to see it at 2 weeks, myself. One week because Gov missed a game, so that equals that out, and one week as punishment for an intentional dog act.

Split second stuff - i don’t think it was malicious. Careless is the right description.

Ryder on gaff on the other hand was a cheap shot and he should have got a week.

Thought Bloods played him well.

I noticed that too. He got the ball in space a couple of times and really took off. Maybe it was that ankle injury we kept hearing about....
Think he played through a few injuries. Him and shuey both played through injuries and niggles last season. Apparently one of them also played through a broken rib(could be a fracture) or even a punctured lung.

Was a fairly high standard game intensity wise from both teams so was a good hit out. Of the younger players

Liam Ryan looks exciting but was slightly off adjusting to AFL level.

Ainsworth looked fairly good but pace could be an issue

Ah Chee got involved but was a bit underwhelming aside from the handball

Waterman was just ok but with all the congestion it wasn't easy for a young player

Love the way Watson plays.

Cole looked good in defence. Think he can make it at AFL level.

Cost Ryder $1500 so that would have hurt.

Do players pay fines or the club?

For that cheap shot the player should.
I’m glad he got something from it.

If they challenge Grays fine it comes out of the soft cap for off field spending. As for the original fines I believe it is the players who play. I may be wrong though.

Yes if he did this early in the game then it's not so bad.

Venables isn't a plug and play. Shuey took years once he started playing to get that consistency but it was clear in patches he was a talent. I get the exact same vibes from Venables

I was going to post the same thing. You could see straight away that Shuey was quality but he wasn't an accumulator at first. He still isn't a full on one now.

Venables looks like he will follow a similar path. He's shown plenty of quality at WAFL level and has been praised by people at the club.

Joking aside, how did people rate Ah Chee?

10 touches, 1 tackle in 3 quarters. Didn't wow me.
Bit late to this, but not very highly. Keeping everything in perspective though.

A few times refused to chase when playing forward (wasn't at the game though so didn't see how that came to be, could have been running himself ragged beforehand), had the dropped mark which was a sitter and just looked a little bit nervous.

He'll be better than what he showed yesterday though.

Let’s hope the Eagles give back to their members for once and stream the game this weekend like most other teams have done over the last week. Channel 7 are there so it’s not a closed session.

The funniest thing about this is that my first memory of Jetts was when he trained with West Coast in the pre season the year before he was drafted (the year when we could have got him as a rookie).

I went to a training session at Subi and we had an intra club scratch match and this skinny kid was playing in the back pocket, one grabbing the ball running away with it and kicking it 50m into guys chests every time - he looked a class above and I thought we had the next Wirra. It's taken 10 years, but maybe... :)

Melbourne copped a bad wrap for missing out on him when Neville Jettas mum told the club that there was another very talented Jetta running around and didn’t pick him up.

But us not picking him even as a rookie in 2008 is one of our bigger drafting blunders of the last 10 years.
