Melbourne copped a bad wrap for missing out on him when Neville Jettas mum told the club that there was another very talented Jetta running around and didn’t pick him up.

But us not picking him even as a rookie in 2008 is one of our bigger drafting blunders of the last 10 years.

It's not gerrick ****ing weedon over Mitch Duncan bad but it's not great.

Unlikely to actually happen but I wouldn’t mind seeing Vardy take darlings spot as the permanent forward for a game or so and still take both Nic and Lycett as rucks. Would we be to tall?

Willie, Jk, Ryan/Cripps
Lecca, Vardy, Achee/venables(etc)
plus potentially a resting ruck at some point

Just one of many guys over the years who've been right under our noses that we could have picked up on the rookie list. Instead we chose to bring in other teams failed crap or keep our own failed crap which unsurprisingly has been a very poor strategy.

Pre-season it may be, but it's a bit alarming that our movement of the ball going forward is still deeply flawed. Although I say alarming, but it shouldn't fundamentally be a surprise should it, considering we only have one midfielder who consistently makes the right decisions going forward and lowers his eyes (Shuey). There's been no personal change in that regard and unless we've come up with some structurally brilliant fix, it's a concern.

Let's not forget we had 6 debutants in the team. Structures and decision making is largely influenced by knowing your team mates and where they are going to be at any given time. It was sloppy for sure but pretty promising considering our lineup

Doesn't help when your forward line is flooded.

Tactically teams have used this against us for years. We need our mids to kick more goal and for out bigger kickers to take shots from outside 50m.

It feels like, with our ball movement from defence, our mids always get held up by opposition walls around 70-80 metres from goal, which is too far for them too have a ping. So they continually aim to kick 50 metre bombs to hit the 'K-spot' around 30m from goals. Which is exactly where the opposition leaves a spare man waiting back to outnumber poor ol Josh

And for some reason the mid who has the ball in this circumstance never seems to have anyone providing overlapping run - possibly because the ball movement tends to be down the wings instead of down the guts

Personally i don't think it helps that none of our mids can kick 50m.

It's very predictable when only Shuey on the run or Jetta can blast it from 50. Probably Yeo as well.

Everyone else always just tries picking out a forward in a crowded 50 thinking he's going to clunk everything. It's the low percentage option and even more ridiculous when it's 191cm custard hands Darling.

Vozzo needs to take a leaf from Clarkson's mantra: "if you can't kick a Zooper Goal™, you won't get drafted"

Getting good quality forward entries is largely on the forwards rather than the mids.

It's easy to say players should 'lower their eyes' but that is more about forwards timing their leads well and coordinating with other forwards to leave space in front of them- smart forwards look like they are getting excellent delivery because they know how to read the play and time their leads so they get clear space just as the mid is about to kick it.

Midfielders will kick to a guy on the move with space in front of them every time, the reason it looks like they are bombing it in because the leads aren't being timed properly and the options aren't there.

Preseason games like yesterday really hit home how we have to start to plan for life after Kennedy and figure out who our next focal point will be.

I think it's still reasonable to expect Darling will improve markedly in his next 40-50 games just through sheer accumulation of experience but it would be nice to see some signs that he's addressing the flaws in his game which have been obvious for a long time.

Port playing that slingshot game plan doesn't help for i50 entries .
They pretty much flooded our forward 50 most of the game .

Is there a way to punish a team for playing this style? It seems to be how Richmond & the Bulldogs do things too with reliance on rebound & overlap running. I worry we are always playing rock when the competition is favouring paper.

Yes, need more of Jetta roosting those killer kicks whilst coming through the centre. What a roost that was vs port!

The main reason Ryan and Rioli have been recruited is to cover for the long bombs into the 50. The club will be relying on Ryan and Rioli to mop up the ground ball and snap goals if we cant hit a forward on a lead. That or Ryan will just sit on someones head and take a grab. :D

Like playing Jetta behind the ball in defence to get him involved more and use his skills.

Or playing Yeo as a mid.

And playing a smaller forward line tobri g more defensive pressure!

Press up hard and pressure any rebound 50s from the opposition. Repeat entries.
Problem is especially last year when the ball hit the deck we didnt have any crumbers and guys like lecras , vardy , petrie dont offer much defensive pressure .
